I will confess that I don't know the first difference between an opera and a musical, but Avenue Q is a work of magnificent, magnificent art regardless.
Saw a production of it. I treated a friend to dinner and a musical for her birthday and it was wonderful. I have a shirt that says "It Sucks To Be Me" and when I was in school I'd wear it to exams.
I've been on a major Rome trip, specifically the album Nos Chants Perdus, and to a lesser extent Flowers From Exile. The latter is about Spanish Anarchists exiled from Spain to France after the Franco's Nationalists defeated the Anarchist in the Spanish Civil War, and the former is about their experience in France. I really love how melancholy, personal and world weary Nos Chants Perdus is. In songs like "L'Assassin", "La Commune", "Sous la Dague" and "Les Iles Noire", it really seems to capture the passion and dedication of those figures and the accompanying sense of melancholy and loss that came with their defeat and exile. It really comes out in the composition, Jerome's singing and the lyrics. Like jeez. Lyrical examples:
All banks and tanks have lost their charm
No one grieves the thieves
No one hails the dawn
But when the sun comes back
We will all be gone
A-shoveling, a-scheming
To help rebuild their walls
To make this world seem wrinkled and tired
No round fired, no assassins hired
All will salute this transformation
That will throw us back
Into a jungle of nations
All will salute the enormous bluff
That never made you blush
That never made you... Hush!
But I don’t care for your milk and honey
Nor do I wish to be wrapped up
In the silence of money
Me who cared for flour and oil
Who cared for blood-drenched soil
And slept the sleep of apples and gold
As in the stories of old
And I don’t care for your grass-given grief
For your pain’s left me locked in disbelief
Among the towers, among the flowers
On anger’s white throne

Sleigh Bells is REALLY LOUD live. I've been rocking out to them since their album dropped. The next one they are going to avoid brickwalling because they decided their music was too abrasive when compared to other songs on a playlist.
The drummer of a big local indie band here in Boise (Finn Riggins) is putting together a festival here this spring. Why? and of Montreal are coming in addition to many of my friends local bands. Now that a kid I used to play street music with is playing sold out shows in NYC and opening for Death Cab a lot of local Boise bands seem to be blowing up.
Probably not, seems right up most of the playground's collective alley.
Speaking of music that you doubt many people listen to, Mindflayer. And noise-rock in general, but ESPECIALLY Mindflayer. I legitimately love that stuff, not a clue how or why.
And Gwyn, if they're too awesome to live, then THEY MUST DIE. >:O

I tried listening to them/him?... and tried to be as openminded as I usually am when I approach new bands.
this however sounds like Leatherface has taken a coffee-break from slaughtering unwary tourists..
and left his chainsaw running

You know (or used to know) Youth Lagoon, right SDF?
Yeah, Trevor is a cool guy. He wrote the album in his bedroom. He would usually play live with a friend, but I'm not sure if he's still doing that now. It's actually pretty amazing just how fast he's taken off. Boise is a really exciting place for music right now. TEENS has gotten some national attention, my dorm roommate is in talks with Capitol Records right now, and my best friends band (FINALLY) recording their first album this month after two and a half years.
Wow, this is my first post since September, 2009. It's good to be back.
I am a huge EDM fan, especially trance and progressive house. I have to say, if you ever get a chance to see Above & Beyond live, they put on one of the best shows out there. My mind was mo'friggin blown last Saturday, honestly one of the best nights I've had ever!

Yarr! The river always be a good place to hunt dinosaurs.
Welp, because my theatre teacher is too much of an ******* to ask if we could go first in the theatre competition, y'know, within 2 months of us asking her to do so, all the Dropkick Murphy's tickets have sold out. Sad.
I'd even dare to say, this stuff is seriously great.
I'm not clear of the origins, but Supermax might be worth checking.
For more traditional funk, there's Edwin Starr, Temptations (if I ever had to choose a favorite band, it would be them - if only because of this).
