My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

First, there are these.

I will, however, resist the urge to make some from episode 4 until next week.

And now, I've read through the thread and re-watched the episode. Here are my followup S2e4 thoughts.

I can see why people are liking the episode. Zecora played a rather large roll, and had a healthy chunk of screentime, which is pretty neat given that she's been mostly absent since Bridle Gossip. Plus, zebra magic. Luna, of course. Pip is awesome, and I hope they keep him around. Pinkie Pie was pretty big in this episode as well, and we get another facet of her personality. (She's one who enjoys having fun, rather than someone who laughs regardless of situation.)

This was definitely an episode I needed to watch twice to enjoy it, though. My first viewing, I was under the impression that the only covered the kids running and screaming and didn't really resolve how the older ponies reacted, but watching it again I can see that a lot of them looked curious or confused every time Luna wandered off; it seems like they were just treating her actions like part of a grand act.

Mr. and Mrs. Cake as Raggedy Ann and Andy was cute. They seem like just the pair that would do that, too.

I do wonder if Celestia gave Luna an intimidating coach and Nightmare Night-dressed guards to unknowingly play up the scary!Luna angle. It certainly wouldn't be outside of her personality to intentionally do so as a friendship lesson.

Episode 4:

Aha, thanks for that. I didn't catch her in the first viewing; heck, I would have missed Sweetie Belle if she wasn't standing right next to Scootaloo in one scene.

Is it just me or is Fluttershy stealing every scene she's in this season?

I didn't think so; Fluttershy was pretty minor in this episode. If anyone stole that scene, it would be Pinkie Pie.

I wonder if this means that Lyra does have an unusually large extended family.

Re-watching the episode I came to think that Luna's first speech was actually quite nice and well performed. She obviously wanted to make a grand and impressing entrance to kick off her favorite night, how sad that it didn't work out for her.

A loud fiery burp, that was a staple of the houslehold, announced the arrival of the most recently sent mail from the royalty of Canterlot. “This one’s from Luna!” Announced Spike, holding out the letter. Grabbing it with telekinesis, Twilight opened it and began to read, eager to see what had been sent over today. I was sitting at the table in the mini kitchen that was the extent that the library could provide. Looking over, I watched as momma Twilight read the letter. Watching her face slowly go from thrilled, to mildly worried, to out-right horrified was something I would’ve found amusing if it weren’t my own mother. “What’s wrong momma?” I asked. Twilight wordlessly floated the letter over to me.

Dear Twilight and Midnight:
I write to you with news most dire. Back when I was still recently banished to the moon, Celestia struck a deal with the griffon kingdom that had several terms and deals, but only one of them is still relevant today. It’s most basic message was “Peace between our kingdoms shall stand as long as the moon is within the sky.” Unfortunately, the current monarch has less enlightened goals then the wise king of old, and has finally managed to get it through their system of red tape and governmental blocking, to make an argument that, ever since the mare in the moon vanished, it’s no longer the same moon in the sky and the deal is null and void. Everyone in Canterlot has been worried for days, but we may have finally figured out a compromise: the current king listens incredibly closely to his grand vizer, who has chosen to take his holidays in ponyville this year. If he has positive things to say about us, then the whole situation might be resolved with minimal effort. The problem is, he’s incredibly stuck-up and apparently says that he will only consort with those “equivalent to a king.” Normally me, or Celly would deal with this, but we’ve got our own massive political melt-down in progress over at the castle. The point of this being, we’ve worked out yet another compromise. He would be willing to talk to you if you were with another pony of the same rank. Very unfortunately, we’ve only got one pony we can spare. On the plus side, you’re familiar with him, on the down-side......It’s Blueblood the second.

As a apology for what I know must be horrible for you, I found a gift for both of you. It’s a small consolation, but all I can do at the moment.

I dropped the letter in sheer shock. Blueblood the second? But Momma Luna knew of our...Interactions in the past. And what was this “gift” that she wrote about? That’s when another fiery burp lit up the library. “That was a big one.” I remarked dryly, too busy processing having to be in the company of blueblood to notice that the entire library had just been glowing from the most recent message.

Spike hefted up the most recent arrival, a tome wrapped in brown paper to ensure safe travel. I silently watched Momma Twilight carefully remove the wrapping from the tome and read out the title. “Magiks of the moon.” I was somewhat surprised by Momma Twilight’s following excitement. “Do you know what this is?” she said. Truth be told, I’d seen a couple of references in some of the older books in the library, but I wasn’t about to spoil Momma’s fun, no matter how distraught I was. “No?” I answered weakly. “It’s just about the oldest book on magic there is! This was the defining work from back before nightmare moon! Everyone had assumed it long lost and the knowledge inside gone forever! Do you know what this could mean if it were deciphered?”
News like that was enough to bring me to my hooves again. Twilight continued, still in librarian mode “Think of all the knowledge this contains!” Opening it reverentially, she leafed through some of the pages. “La Maladie Maledictum, Sillurian Miscellana, Rowen's Saggitarii, l'Grandè è l'Formidablè Eixirt? This is some of the most complex spell-work I’ve ever seen!” Noticing her distraction, I seized the opportunity to get some words in. “I don’t suppose we could try untangling any of this stuff together?” “Of course!” Said Twilight, looking shocked for a moment, “Even if this stuff didn’t require two unicorns working on them, I’d still want you to help! I’ll read through some of this stuff, and see what we can try first, all right?” Before I could reply, Twilight bounded up into her bedroom and closed the door behind her. Despite this, I had to grin. Anything this interesting that made momma that happy had to be good. And maybe the whole Blueblood situation wouldn’t be too bad after all. But first things first.... “I’m going out for my lunch momma!” I said bounding out the door, knowing that there was a certain somepony waiting for me.....




And somewhere on the other side of ponyville.....




I sat in my den of knowledge, my cave of news, my... rug of rumors! Imagine, if you will, a plain and simple wall, in a plain and simple newspaper office. Look closer at this wall, You notice a door, “But surely this is but an ordinary door leading to, perhaps, a broom closet?” Is what you might say if you knew not the truth. If you were to enter, you would see the true glory that began as a vision and has been brought to reality. I had notes about every event that has ever happened in Ponyville, all the rumors and gossip on the street pieced together across the room with pins and string functioning as my web of truth. Allowing me to have a giant ball of lies which, if properly tended, some information could be carefully gleamed from.

My keen reporter’s eye observing all of today’s rumors as I filtered them through. “Prince rumored to be arriving in town?” Preposterous! “Town council receiving mysterious bribes?” Irrelevant! I scanned through looking for some real news. Ah-ha! I found the true piece of news within this all!


That was when the door was kicked open. “The web of truth! “ I blurted out before realizing who it was. “Hey boss, I found her! She’s taking her lunch break in the broom closet again!” Shouted Snappy Scoops (No relation to the dashingly brilliant Reporter-pony Whadda Scoops) “Well, leave her there until she’s finished then!” Cried back the editor of “Trotter” (INH). “Actually” I said gathering my things “I’ve got a stakeout to partake in.” “Is this one of your famous stake-outs Whadda?” Jeered Snappy. “Like that time you-” “We agreed never to speak of that again!” I yelled out before she could mention the incident. “I have a real piece of news to pursue!” I shouted over my shoulder, while leaving the headquarters behind. Somepony’s been leaving mysterious transcripts at the library! While over my shoulder I could hear them discussing the benefits of keeping somepony who can think in italics.

Whadda:

It was a perfect night for observing the library. The stars were up, it was lovely and warm, and even the normal inhabitant of the bushes was out at a recital, so I manged to get the best spot for observation. As a result of this, Whadda has decided to speak in the third-pony when announcing her plans to pull out her binoculars and hunker down.

….............................

No results. Whadda has to pack it in just before dawn, but she knows that her persistence shall be rewarded! Whadda is now going to save her third-pony perspective to avoid creeping out the ponies at the newsstable.

Whadda is back for another night of dedicated watching towards her goal of finding this unofficial library contributer! Although I am hoping to find the library bandit tonight because the weather team does have a thunder storm planned later tonight. Combined with the fact that there’s no recital tonight....

That was the most miserable night of Whadda’s entire life. She is now soaking wet and will have to go to work like this! At least Whadda has gotten most of the mud off herself and dried off her hat. Most of the scratches were superficial anyway. “Whadda has now decided to obtain a hot drink at the newsstabl-” Whadda announced aloud, before having her speech cut off by the greatest thing Whadda has ever seen in her long and varied career of reporting. The most perfect, beautiful, and snow-white pegasus that Whadda has ever seen stood, buying a copy of “Trotter” of the newsstable. “Careful Whadda, you know how many celebrity ponies are actually horrible under those looks.” Whadda mumbled under her breath, but apparently not quiet enough as the pegasus turned, amazingly of course, towards Whadda with the newspaper wrapped under one wing and said “Eh? I didn’t quite catch that.” She said in a voice, like to all that could hear it was a melody of angels. “What’s your name?” She asked, taking Whadda by surprise. “Whadda Scoops the reporter has decided to state her name to the pegasus as being Whadda Scoops!” Was what my mouth fired off before my brain had a chance to intervene. An awkward moment passed slowly. “You’ve got only one chance to impress her so get it right!” I mentally screamed at myself. But what was a smooth, innocuous comment that would impress her, obviously a mare of the greatest taste and sensibilities?

Then my keen reporter’s eyes scanned over her and my pupils widened in shock. I knew what I had to do. “I’m reporting on the story of library bandit you know. So, how was the library last night?” I said as it were the most normal thing in Equestria, to the greatest of my ability while a living dream was in my presense. I noticed her reaction, her complete freezing with the smile still on her lips, that only confirmed further what I knew. “I.....Don't know what you’re talking about,” She said quickly, with a voice that sounded better then an orchestra of angels. “Why would you possibly think that?” I hated to push her like this, but even beauty to launch a thousand ships must take second place to the truth. “Well, as I’ve been in hideout last night there’s a numerous amount of clues. Firstly, your wings are still sligthly wet, you’ve done a good job on drying them, but they still have a slight fluff. Secondly, on your hooves are a combination of grass with the slight magical tint that comes from being near a concentration of magic, which only exists in two places in ponyville and if you’d been seeing Zecora, somepony would’ve brought it to me. Thirdly ,there were a variety of other clues, slight tells on your part when I mentioned it but most importantly, I saw a white feather caught in the window sill last night.”
Seeing her clear discomfort at the masterful summary of the facts was obviously causing her some distress, and what lady of undeafeatable beauty wouldn’t be distressed at these facts? So I decided to wrap it up quickly. “With all these facts in place I’m afraid there is only one conclusion I can bring from this.” I paused, dramatically pointing a hoof at this paragon of everything beautiful and said “You might have seen the bandit!”

Midnight:
“So then what happened?” “She had to go to work, so she scheduled an interview for noon. But enough of that, how’s your day going?” “Well, your most recent manuscript is really good but....” I lower my voice slightly for empathsis as I recited Momma Luna’s letter. “But at least it’s only for a week.” “That sounds like a really mean things for your mother to do.” “I suppose the situation’s desperate, But I can deal with it. How bad could it be?” The town clock then rang twelve times. “I suppose you’re right. Good luck!” “See you later.” I said, trotting away. Mulling over my last words, “How bad could it be?” I repeated to reassure myself, heading towards the town hall. My question was swiftly answered when I saw the upper-most window break in the town hall, observed as something flew towards me, and was surprised when the mayor landed on top of me.

Done and all caught up with the thread... I think... egad. I had gotten 3/4ths of the way through writing this, got sidetracked, came back, and found four more pages waiting for me.

I loved it, I was grinning or laughing almost the whole time. No Rarity was too bad (I kept looking for her every time we got near the apple bobbing, as per the leaked and apparently scrapped image from last week), and as every other poster has pointed out, everypony forgetting what happened in the pilot was a little plot hole-y... but overall, I was still very entertained.

I'm happy with Luna as she was portrayed, but I think I'd have actually liked a /little/ more of meek Luna slipped in there. Just a little, though.

*Nightmare giggles softly, giving Inkblot gentle nuzzles, her mane giving the nervous stallion cuddles!

"Silly pony, of course I'm not going to turn anypony into a newt or anything like that. This is Cuddlefort, we don't do things like that here!"

If what she is doing now is an illusion, it's the most convincing illusion ever.

"To answer your question, yeah, there are two of us. Midnight, and myself. It's a very long story, but to put it simply, I'm the last bits of Nightmare Moon that survived after Luna was purified, and I transferred to Midnight. It's okay, though, I'm a good pony though!" She looks over at the guard, and smiles. "So, there's nothing you need to worry about either. Why don't you join in the cuddlefort? It really is a lot of fun."

She then turns her attention to Lyra, and lets out a bit of a sigh, but her tail starts cuddling Lyra, stroking her in the same places that Midnight had done before.

"Really, I don't understand, Twilight will never be yours, and you have a perfectly good mare waiting for you. C'mon, give it up, go back and cuddle with some ponies. Wasn't that much more fun than hiding in the bushes?"

Her eyes glance briefly at Flashpoint. He's far enough away to not be able to hear what he's talking about, but he does seem to be acting a little strangely, so she's going to keep an eye on him unless he causes problems!

As he is cuddled and caressed, Inkblot mentally considers his predicament. He thinks back to his days speaking in the library with the renowned professor in Canterlot, furrowing his brow as an image of the grizzled gray stallion appears in his imagination, his flank branded with a cutie mark of a cigar. He considers the situation, then speaks, with an air of great authority... "Obviously, ze patient iz suffering from a sort of dementia, perhapz brought on by certain urges zat were left over from her younger years. What you are experienzing now is what is called transference, when the patient projects her feelingz for a figure in her earlier life onto ze therapist; you clearly remind her of her father, and her affection indicates--" "Uh, Professor?" Yez, what iz it? Why are you interrupting? "She claims to have three mothers. One of them is a goddess." "Oh. Well, zat iz most unusual. I've got nothing, you're on your own. Perhapz you are ze crazy one!"

Inkblot mentally huffs. The old coot did have some decent ideas, and it paved the way for many further great developments in his field, but as often as not, he really didn't have the slightest what he was talking about... Inkblot often secretly suspected that he was making it up as he went along. Asking Midnight to write down her dreams and to free associate wasn't going to do any good here and now; he'd need to puzzle this one out on his own.

He's taken from his thoughts, blinking a bit as he glances between Lyra and Nightmare. "Uh... does she have a crush on your-- one of your moms? Erm, nevermind. So, uh, there are two of you. And... you're not evil. How's that work? Can you both hear me? How, uh, how do you change back and forth? Why are you green now?" He pauses, realizing just how many questions he just asked. "Uh, sorry. I don't mean to be rude... it's just, you know. Kind of... weird. Not that weird has to be bad..." Inkblot trails off, flinching a bit again.

This one took me longer to write... *psych major, clearly doesn't at all channel this into his roleplay* I had the idea of Sigmane while driving earlier, and just /had/ to somehow incorporate him, even if just as a brief gag. :P Anyhow, though.

I'm assuming they are just regular pegasuses dressed up for Nightmare Night, possibly with some fancy Canterlot magic to change the appearance of their wings. Given how Equestria works, I wouldn't be surprised if the royal guard was required to dress up for work that night.

I'm not putting it past Celestia, either, for her to ask them to dress that way specifically to increase Luna's intimidation factor upon arriving in Ponyville.


This does bring up an interenstion question. Most unicorns only have magic that relates directly to their special talent. The pegasuses's wings were likely magic'd up. Does that mean that there might be a unicorn out there whose special talent is making Nightmare Night decorations?

Since the moon wars, the Sun Princess has steadily been more tyrannical, methodical, and cruel. Over the last few decades she has also descended into depravity and madness; in her paranoia, she has begun ruthlessly hunting down and arresting random ponies, Charging them with treason and conspiracy. Equestria is an iron-clad shamble, it's infrastructure supported by a small fraternity who formed amongst the courtiers and royal guards.

Unbeknownst to the Princess, or the guardsponies, the moon is an entire plane rather than a barren, rocky satellite. Strewen with ancient ruins of a past civilization, and roamed by those of monstrous mien, creature and pony alike. The Princess has been banishing ponies, griffons, diamond dogs, even dragons, and on the moon a society of sorts is forming.

The dragons, messengers and guardians of the moon's limited wealth, have formed kingdoms. The ponies, caught between moon monsters and stacking slavers, have formed their own outposts. What magic is available has been used to eke out a lunarial existence, and the rarest of dragons - the messengers - remain allied with ponykind. Supplies and food trickle in through dragon's fire, supplying the Lunarian elite with supplies to feed their lust for power. Kingdoms form. Factions rise. The land itself seeks to extinguish those who tread too heavy upon it, and you, either a veteran of the moon or banished to it, for crimes real or imagined, must forge your way in this strange new land — if you can survive your stone prison.

NB: From what I gather, the setting is still a WIP, not sure if it will be grimdark or not but here are some associated Siuis ramblings in response to various reactions from the ponythread.

Well, if you want to roll up a new character, be my guest. I had tried to set it up such that the current batch would sort of "wake up" and realize they aren't in the Equestria they went to sleep in. This would let ponies be in the game without hanging very much and would give the party a sense of kinship (since they all remember a world that didn't exist), but I'm not sure I've put it together well enough just yet.

Grimdark? Well, it could be, aye. I fear that may be the language choices I made however.


Ambiguity was intentional; I don't want to nail something down and have to undo it later.

Currently, there are big dragons such as in DragonShy and Owls Well That Ends Well, that are able to eke out large territories or "kingdoms". It's an in-game reason to have a place that isn't just over-run with moon monsters.

The smaller dragons, like Spike, would work specifically with their close pony friends. And while the Bluebloods of the world would rather just have a bunch of ponies fawn over them, the Trixies of the world have no problem publicly humiliating those who would rock the boat. Like, say, putting them in the stocks? Except where do you get the stocks? And how do you keep ponies in them? So we need guards and labor. But how do we keep the guards loyal? Why, bribery, of course! And so a web of greedy pony politics formed in my head.

As for resources, I believe some parts of the moon are hospitable (I could see Fluttershy specifically making a niche for herself, growing food and bringing culture to the moon monsters). And even if supplies could only be transferred dragonto dragon, all it takes is a banished noble writing one heartfelt plea for a good home-cooked supper, before they realize there is an items-only fast trade route back to Equestria. Pocket black markets would spring up in no time.



Makes sense. As I said, ambiguity is a future for me right now. I'm allowing the chance for grim stuff very specifically, for two reasons. The first is a nod to the source material (Dungeons and Dragons). The second, more important reason is leeway. As things stand, the setting is like the Nightmare Before Christmas; it's an ostensibly dark setting, full o undead and demons. Yet cannibalism, being fired on by artillery, treachery, and kidnapping are still horrible atrocities.

Similarly, the setting is potentially horrible; banished to a far off realm, having to create a society amongst the criminals and the naive both, tyrannical dragons using diamond dog hit men to enslave ponies... But these are ponies. They don't do that sort of thing.

In the end, I'm not going to have some royal pony slap around the hired help while the heroes watch if they spend there time being show-accurate and heroic, because that's horrible. But if the party decides they want to run a black market smuggling ring, I'm not going to keep the rest of the world all cartoon-y. It's as broad as can be so the players can set the tone.

Okie doke, so I realize that the pieces I've written up imply a setting to me, but I can't just leave it at that, aye?

I needed three things for the game. Dungeons, dragons, and banishment. Dungeon was easy; it followed banishment. But only Celestia has that power, so why not banished to the moon?

I like the setting concept because it displays the best of both dungeons and dragons, and ponies. Adrift in a strange land, how do they adapt? The ponies colonize, trade, and bolster. Some are perfectly fine, finding the moon to be just like Equestria, though in need of some terraforming. Others desperately want to return home, and seek the means to do so. Others are just biding their time until something gives, living their lives as best they can. There can be normal pony cities, metropolitan areas with many different cultures, dungeons with reclusive loners, and all of that stuff. It's also of note; how do earth ponies survive without equestrian soil (earth)? How do pegasi live when clouds are a rarity? What do unicorns do without Canterlot, the societal center that is their home territory?

The moon is a strange land. The sun ne'er graces the height of it's skies, and with good reason; Equestria doesn't appear as a round world, but as an impossibly large disk superimposed over the sky. As the moon rises, the western edge of Equestria sweeps across the lunar surface, rotating; at midnight when the moon is highest, Equestria is a flat place, seemingly hundreds of miles above the moon, and finally, it starts to tilt again, the eastern side falling towards the moon's surface like a huge see-saw¹
Additionally, Nightmare Moon was banished here as well. She certainly doesn't want to be here! Now if only somepony could actually find her, they'd have a powerful ally, who could maybe get them back to Equestria. after all, canon NMM was alone on the moon, with no society or friendship to draw from.

I also decided to include some stuff from the thread for a laugh. Why is everything so different? Leo followed Starry Notions through time, into the past, and true to his expectations it mucked everything up. And of course he is unable to find Starry (or Whooves) to fix it.

I can see how it's too grim, indeed. But to me, it's no worse than any port adventure, where there is the possibility of a seedy underbelly. Every D&D setting has these details, I'm just listing the for the sake of completion.

Obvious weaknesses are that I need more of a planned story for PbP, I need to not spread things so thin, and I need to decide on the final touches.

Another note is lethality. I really want it to be non-lethal, but I've had some bad experiences with perceived player immortality...

That's my hand, as far as I can remember it. Any pointers, suggestions, questions or critique appreciated.

¹: it makes sense if you envision it like an amusement ride; your flat disk is on an invisible arm, and goes around another disk which is stationary. At the zenith, you're looking "up" at a flat plane. As you move, the edges "tilt" towards you.
Even better, I figure the dark side of Equestria are where all the monsters are, jumping to the moon and then jumping to the surface afterwards.

Born to a musical family in Canterlot, there was no doubt that her talents would lie in a similar field. Groomed on several instruments as a foal, she soon realised her passion for creating music, as opposed to simply making it.

Many years ago Chargermane proved himself to be a loyal champion of Princess Celestia's Royal Guard. However, after one campaign he decided to retire, and he has since trained promising recruits at the academy instead. Biography: Born and raised in a small town near Fillydelphia, Silverbolt has always been fascinated by storms and the weather engineers who create them. As a foal, he dreamed of growing up to work at the prestigious Cloudsdale Weather Factory, and hoofcrafting beautiful lightning storms to wow everypony.

But there was one obstacle standing in his way: Cloudsdale University. More specifically, its extremely popular (and, in Silver's view, over-coddled and over-privileged) hoofball team. Silverbolt had long been teased and bullied by more athletic pegasi because of his weight problem, nearsightedness, and his bookish nature; he had no desire to attend a school that put such a heavy emphasis on its sports program. So, instead, he did something completely unexpected: enrolled at the University of Canterlot. He found that he gets along better with most unicorns than most pegasi, and while the campus isn't really designed for somepony with wings, the classes are absolutely fascinating. He's particularly enjoyed learning about unicorn weather magic, feeling that knowing other ponies' ways of doing things can only help everypony in the long run.
