When Renetta is brought to the infirmary, she slumps into a chair and puts her head in her hands. She feels like crying, but she's all cried out. So instead she sits there and worries.

"Dear, I think you should lay down," Pansy insists, and encourages her to get into a bed.

Nurse Piper appears and begins checking Renetta and the baby over to make sure they're both okay.

He points to some faint trails passing through the wood, marked with blazes on the tree trunks, and one-cactus gaps in the wall!

And then of course there's the main entrance. It's on the other side of camp though.

She tilts her head, looking in the direction he is pointing and making note of a trail she hadn't seen before. She never notices these things!

"SO WHY WOULD SOMEONE TRY TO ATTACK THIS PLACE?" she echoes confusedly, returning her gaze to the gardener, "WHERE AM I?"

"No, I don't want to lie down." Renetta already feels helpless enough. Lying down isn't going to help that one bit. She will let Nurse Piper look her over, however. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with her or the baby.

Nurse Piper conducts most of the examination with Renetta sitting up. "You appear to be in perfect health, but you to lie down so I can listen to the baby's heartbeat." The ghost nurse has a stethoscope for this. There may well be more advanced equipment in the infirmary, but if so, Nurse Piper has not been trained in its use.

Renetta nods and reluctantly moves onto the bed. Why were they worrying about her? They should be worrying about Waterstrider, or anybody else. Nothing happened to her.

[Morty]

[Infirmary]

Renetta and Nurse Piper will see Sophie, pulling her shirt over a thick bandage. What's wrong? He asks looking at the elf and the ghost.

Because Waterstrider isn't in the Infirmary! At least that's Nurse Piper's excuse. HT's excuse is that she has memory fail.

"I'm going to go and check his hut," Brand says. "That's probably where he and Lily are right now." In a burst of retconjuration, he said this as soon as Renetta was safely in the infirmary and then left.

Back in the present: Baby heartbeat! Nurse Piper listens for a few moments, then... smiles? She never smiles! "Everything sounds normal. Would you like to listen?"


"Hopefully, nothing's wrong with Renetta," Pansy says. "Waterstrider lost a paw though."

"It was a pumpkin monster who did it," Tito says.

[Morty]

[Infirmary]

Sophie blinks. Two attacks at the same time? Figures. A... pumpkin monster? Oh dear. Is it gone now?

"Irene scared it away with her flaming sword," Tito says.

[Morty]

[Infirmary]

I'm glad to hear that. Sophie sits down on the bed heavily. How's Waterstrider coping?
She decides not to tell them she just saved their father and husband from being kidnapped. He can tell them all about it if he wants to.

Renetta blinks at Nurse Piper then looks down at her stomach. "I... Yes. I'd like to." And then, presumably, the ghost lets her listen. She listens with silent awe as she hears the tiny heartbeat. She puts her hands on her stomach. A small smile turns up the corners of her lips.

Pansy, the only other undeadtimed character in the room (to my knowledge) who has experienced pregnancy, gets a little teary eyed seeing Renetta's reaction.

Tito, who thinks the stuff going on with Renetta is pretty boring, has gone to talk to Sophie. "Mr Rae tried to make him better and give him a blue paw, but it just scared him so Waterstrider ran away and carried Lily with him. But he won't hurt her."

Sophie has never been pregnant, no. Being chosen by the Heralds to inherit the Earth rather interfered with her plans to get married and have children.
Oh dear. She winces, reaching for the bandaged wound. I'd try to help but I don't think I'm should be going anywhere.

It's a shame there's no druid around.

"How did you get hurt?" Tito asks.

I was... fighting two bad people who came to the camp. I and some other people drove them off, but they hurt me first, Sophie says, trying to sound as matter-of-factly as possible.

Tito slumps. "It's not fair. It's supposed to be safe here."

Sophie looks down. It's so sad to see a child have his sense of security shaken. All by some... monsters and scumbags looking for easy prey. Cowards, every one of them, coming after children and noncombatants.
I know. A place full of peaceful people is always tempting for monsters. But there will always be someone here to protect those who can't defend themselves.

Who knows, maybe you will one day. You're still young and this world is full of possibilities.

Pathfinder's Hut

When the paw is gone, the Wolfen begins licking at the wound for a while, cleaning it. Even though it reopens some of the scabs, he doesn't stop until much of the burned part other than the stump itself is gone. He doesn't make much noise during this, and once finished he curls up around Lily, resting his head on Renetta's pillow and watching the door, as if he's waiting for her to return.

Pathfinder's Hut

Brand enters the hut and sees Waterstrider and Lily. "Hi Daddy," Lily says, sleepily snuggled with Waterstrider.

"Hey there Lily-bily," Brand says. Despite his trust in Waterstrider, he's very relieved to see that the two are safe. But Waterstrider was still injured, still in an animal mind. "Waterstrider, will you and Lily be safe here?" he asks, looking into the wolf's eyes.
