The interior of the Sad Flint is quite crowded. People are coming and going all over the rather large barroom. Patrons of any possible description abound, most content to drink the beers in their hands. No one bothers to turn their head when yet another patron walks in. The atmosphere of the place is slightly dingy, but comfortable.
A lone half-giant is serving as the bartender at the long bar across from the entrance. Round tables with an average of four chairs each litter the common area, although several have borrowed chairs from others nearby. More than half of them seem occupied by patrons of some description and number. A pair of armored bouncers guard a double door along the west wall.
Barmaids of many different races weave in and out of the traffic, delivering food and drinks, as well as picking up empty crockery and more than a few pick-up lines.

"Done. But I meant more like what is your price range than your preferences... the Sad Flint is a premium inn and as such a room like you ask will be 2 gold per night..." he says and waits for your answer.

"Ouch, a hefty price indeed. .... I'm into the information business, and relatively new here. I'm sure you have a good set of ears with such interesting clientele. If the price includes feeding me bits of info and the occasional simple meal, say twice a day, we've got a deal. I pay up front, for a week to start. What say you?"

The half-giant pockets the money and gives you a key. He indicates a staircase leading up situated at the back of the room.
The room is comfortable and has a window overlooking the street.
Once you return for your meal you are served on the counter by a young half-elf. The bartender approaches and sets a large mug of mead next to your plate.
"So what kind of information interests you friend?"

"Ah yes, an introduction is in order I guess. My name is Scribly and I'm a detective of sorts. I find missing things or persons, all for the right price of course. "
Eating/drinking
"So, from the town crier I got several jobs that I might be interested in, as most are about missing goods or people and even a cat. However, I found out the one with Cassatta is quite difficult, since it requires going to the docks. Which apparently, is a bad idea with the recent troubles. So perhaps you could enlighten me on which jobs are still open and less dangerous then the docks?"
"My other question is about these docks, since trouble is sometimes associated with profit. What is going in the docks exactly, and who's winning?"

"Hmmm... we always need hands in the kitchen if you are into a good honest job. The dirt on the dishes is easy enough to find. Alternatively you can try and find out why no musician likes to stay in the Sad Flint as a bard for a long time!" he says and laughs loudly.
"On the other hand if you want something more lucrative perhaps the other services of the Flint may be for you..." he says as he points towards the door at the other side of the room, guarded by the two bouncers.
"As for the Docks. Hmmm thats bad business... a few days ago a major crime organisation, the Jacks, were taken out by a coalition of other gangs. During the attack on the Jacks though the Hobgoblins from the Slums took it upon themselve to expand their territory by taking over the Docks. The Docks has been the territory controlled by the Skulks for many generation and though they are blood thirsty and hate humans they generally stayed within their territory and only made attacks during the night and almost only against humans. In the attack they actually ended up killing many children and women of the Skulks but did not actually decimate the fighting force since that was out destroying the Jacks... the result is open gang war in the Docks while the guard does not interfere. From their point of view they will wait until the two gangs destroy each other before moving in to mop up the pieces... but the Gods know what will have befallen then citizens of the Docks until that happens..."

"I believe Cassatta is a woman but I dont know much else about her..." he replies.
"As for your prices... well maybe I wouldnt be able to afford it. The various patrons that advertise their jobs at the Sad Flint generally can do more than just your prices Mr Scribly." he replies seriously.

"Well we hear about this short of thing more often than you would think... I guess perhaps lately people notice it more and thats why there is all this talk about cults and the like." he pauses as a man dressed in expensive clothing enters the tavern and approaches the bar.
The half-giant excuses himself and talks in whispered tones with the man. He ends up giving him some kind of coin and the man heads over to the bouncers, gives the token and enters through the door behind them.
The bartender returns to you.
"So... where was I? Ah yes the missing people. So last person I heard missing was some old lady that had rich family... her son offered a reward against the commands of the Guard and thats why the whole thing came to the surface more loudly than usual..."

"Well where could you find that lady is the question. Or rather a 5000 gold question. Had I known that I would stride up to the man himself and get the reward for myself!" he says seriously.
When you ask about what just happened he shrugs.
"Employer or employee... hard to say. We get all shorts giving all shorts of jobs here at the Flint..." he says and winks.

"The family name is Streich. The elderly woman taken was called Feirsta and her son, the man that put up the reward, Aemon. They live in the better parts of Old Town close to the University..."
"About signing up... well I guess you are a good sport and seeing as you will be leaving an extra tip since the mead is so good I can give you this..." he says and leans in closer giving a small wooden coin with the face of a squid on both sides.
"Tell the bouncer to the left 'Jethro has seen better days'..." he says with a much lower tone.

The guard takes the token from your hand with a deft movement and nods.
His colleague opens the door for you and closes it after you enter. There seems to be some kind of magical effect going on that does not allow you to see what is inside until you actually pass through the threshold.
Assuming you do enter, on the other side is a dwarf sitting at a desk with a pile of papers strewn throughout. He glances up as you enter and says, "Oh, another one so soon? Sign this and please don't mess with the paperwork on my desk." He pushes a paper your direction.
The walls are bare stone, and behind him is a black door made of iron.

" Its a standard non-disclosure agreement." The dwarf says.
You find that the contract is indeed a standard non-disclosure agreement requiring the undersigned and all associated entities within his party that are so beholden to him to agree not to discuss anything seen in the rooms beyond or discuss the nature of the jobs found within, except the job that the person ends up taking with the person who hired it. Convoluted legal language fills the contract tying up loopholes and leaving little room for interpretation to finangle your way out. One odd passage mentions something about a needle mine, but the specifics will be hard to parse out without legal training.
Overall it seems the agreement is there to protect the Sad Flint from any type of blame that would come from the jobs given within...

He cheerfully takes you up the left-hand staircase. He opens the door at the top and ushers you on through.
"I apologise for having to escort you till we reach here but the door will only open by my hand" he says as you enter.
On the other side are long hallways with labels describing the sort of jobs offered along that hall.
The signs all advertise various roles, such as "Protection - offensive" or "Defense - pro-active". There are even darker type of employment like "problem solving - aggressive" , "target removal - discreet". Most any sort of hired service that one would need a hire hand for can be found here.
