Start of Darkness: Lirian's Cave was warded against most magical forms of entry and exit, which is why Redcloak couldn't simply Plane Shift the group out of there.

and the followup:

Why there wasn't a Rogues' Gallery of previously-imprisoned villains trapped in the cave with Team Evil.

The link that was suggested is this one. It's more on the D&D, Alignment, and Morality topic and it fits with the links already present there, IMO.

Well, it was obviously not obvious to everyone.

But on the other hand, I kind of agree with the person who said "Deus Ex Machina" is just a passive-aggressive way of saying that you didn't like something, so I'm not sure whether this is really an issue in burning need of clarification.

My personal folder is a graveyard of ideas, stuck in their dream phase.
The "DM won't kill us" attitude is a bubble that sometimes needs to be bursted.
There's an armor variant rule in UA that will drastically increase character survivability without completely bubble-wrapping them in plot invulnerability
