So, what are peoples plans for Australia Day? I'm meeting some friends and hanging out. Nothing really exciting, but should still be worth while.

You?

I'm trying to work that out. Not many Australian flags to drape 'round my neck like a bogan superhero here in Scotland...

I don't have anything special planned, either. Will probably head into the city to pick up some last-minute stuff for Waicon, but nothing specific to Australia Day.

I plan to stay the hell inside and avoid the tirade of mild to extreme racism that spews forth every year.

Although I'll probably have to listen to my housemates yelling at each other in hindi like they have the past few days.

I happened to be in town last year, too. Fortunately I was out of there before things went nuts. Hopefully this year as well, but it's the heat I'm more worried about right now.

EDIT: Dad says stores aren't open today. Just goes to show how oblivious I am and how much I need to ned out more. Derp. I could've sworn I bought other stuff last year, but that must've been the YuGiOh event I was at...

...Speaking of those, feel free to come along to one of them if you don't already! You'll recognise me by my rather distinctive being-the-only-female-duelist appearance.

Heya DLD, are you actually going to the Waicon thing on Sat?

I just ask because I think I may be heading down to it with my brother late in the afternoon (he'll be my ride out of the city, so can't abandon him sadly )

Never been to one before/don't have any costume or anything. Anything interesting to look out for for the average person?

I was planning to go both days, but Saturday is now out of the question since I've found out that a grandparent's birthday is on that day. In Bunbury.

I should be able to get to the con on Sunday if I can get my older brother and his girlfriend to let me go home early with them. If I make it, I'll be wearing lots of purple (Haunter Gijinka closet cosplay! Yay!) and probably hanging around the TWA table.

I'd say there's some interesting things to look out for. Some of the cosplayers are really good, and last year there was a huge games room set up to the side of the main event. Should be the same this time around.

I personally prefer Supanova, but Waicon is pretty fun, too.

So, housemates decided today they no longer like living with two cats. We were given the option of 'give them away' or 'take one month's notice to move out.'

We're looking for places now.

Hello everyone.
It's nice to see a thread for Australians to randomly chat.
I'm from Brisbane, by the way.

Hmmm.. It may be just a teensy bit late, but do any playgrounders feel like meeting up some time at Cancon either the day after tomorrow or that day after that (given there'll be no chance of pulling anything off tomorrow). I'll hopefully be embroiled in the Youngbloods 40k tournament for the better half of the first two days, but it'd still be nice to meet a couple of the other playgrounders face to face.

Thoughts?

True, (other than myself and Zoot) but I believe there may be a few playgrounders down here for Cancon, yes?

Ahha! I now know two Canberrians. I also now know that Cancon is on this weekend as of a few minutes ago.

I wouldn't know if anyone else is going, but I can say that I didn't even know it was on. So, I'm suspecting the number of attendees reading this thread will be low.

What is this thing you're talking about? Because it sounds like fun and I live in Perth

Though I've spent the entire last week in the house with the air con on, hiding from the frigging heatwave - not sure I'm brave enough to leave... Our air con is evaporative and sucky, but it's better than nothing!

What did I do for Australia day?

I went birdwatching... and then got caught in a thunderstorm.

After being in the 40 Celsius heat, it was glorious!

Oh and a kindly fellow birdwatcher couple invited me for Oz day roast lamb and red wine. Good day was good

Also I am sooo glad that it's not 42 Celsius today...

Well, I just discovered that uni starts again this week. Cue panicking.

Well, that was yesterday. I've got it all sorted out now, so that's something. And I'm also glad to see that I'm not the only one that is sick of the heat (though it hasn't been 40C here yet, thank God).

What year are you going in to? I'm going into second year, and I'd signed up for a Summer intensive, which is how it snuck up on me (uni proper doesn't start for another three weeks).

Anyway, you'll do fine, uni is both enlightening, and entertaining.
