Lesson: in fantasy games, you CAN get a career with an art degree
Maybe that's why they're called "fantasy".
Also, unless you go for a ladderhack or something, killing things is far more lucrative.

Ooh, did you grab one of those handy-dandy special weapons from SGoS?

Hey PONIES, you still alive? Only one not to post yet.
Yeah, alive. Just a busy holiday weekend. Sauntering over to the IC thread now.
EDIT: And we start off with a rather unimpressive showing from our knowledge monkey. I've edited the results of my Knowledge checks into my post, rather than making another one. I hope that's okay.

Just as a question (because I'm rather fond of Truenamers myself), but how did you get the difference in bonus between your sheet (41) and the thread (45)? Additionally, your Hidden Truth checks should have been made with a bonus 5 higher than your Universal Aptitude check, since Universal Aptitude gives you a +5 to Truespeak.

That would be the +4 circumstance bonus for using an utterance on myself.

I did forget to apply the bonus from Universal Aptitude. Mea culpa.
Regardless, the check was good enough to get about the only nugget of information that I'll be prepared to give out at this point (he said, hoping to forestall further information checks for the time being...).

Crud, I have to be the bearer of bad news.
While you do get a +4 bonus to speaking your own personal Truename (and therefore a +4 circumstance bonus when you use an utterance on yourself), when you speak a personal Truename- any personal Truename- the DC of the check is raised by 2, as per page 196 of the Tome of Magic. It equates out to a +2 bonus.
Yes, it's stupid, but it's RAW, and half the fun of playing a Truenamer is making it work as written.

So we can't just kill the messenger and then let me Speak With Dead?

Also, Thoven would need some serious convincing to kill the messenger, especially since he knows that the info the messenger gave is all the info he has. (I'm assuming his diplomacy roll was high enough for him to know he did the best of his ability.)
Though, yes, Thoven's horse could kick that spindly thing's aft to curb and back - Racing or otherwise

His diplomacy roll was enough to make the messenger helpful (relatively speaking). Which is not necessarily (well, not remotely) the same thing as giving all of the information that he has.

There's another half too?

Ach, I always skip that part and think it's just part of the "save DCs are raised by 2." Seriously though, who uses utterances that require saves?

The fact that, if you can crank your check enough, there's not much your DM can do to stop you...from speaking utterances that have relatively tame effects. Then you get to 20th level and start using gate at will.

Screw Conjunctive Gate. You can do awesome things well before that, my friend, and it all ignores SR (for a mere +5 DC):
1. Make something fall, period.
2. Make a spell effect end.
3. Make a 'Solid Fog' effect.
4. Make something fall, but faster.
5. Slow. No Save, no SR.
6. Decent direct damage.
7. That's pretty much it.
Yeah, well, none of it is really as gamebreaking. Though I do like Rebuild Item...can I use it to patch up consumable magic items like potion tiles, allowing me to use them again?
And Spell Rebirth is pretty sweet as the only undispelling effect in the game. Naturally, you could just cast the darn thing again, but this wins on style points.
Huzzah, it's my favorite part of meeting other characters- the "oh by the way I can turn into a gorilla three times a day" phase of getting to know people.
