Tools of Chaos
You saw a job notice on the town of St. Marcus bulletin board that a local alchemist wants some monstrous spider specimens. Dead is preferred and the bigger the better. The alchemist also wants purple and yellow mushrooms. The last thing on the list are snake fish. After asking around town you find out that the spiders and mushrooms can be found in the in the woods to the west of town and that if you follow the sour stream in the woods upwards you will find the hot springs where they hang out, but good luck catching them.

Angus muses to himself.
Ah hah, a challenge! Surest way for me to try something is to be told it ain't possible.
He buys a light crossbow and begins following the stream.

After some time of walking you hear some skittering in the brush to your right, but you can't see what it is.

The skittering stops. Suddenly you hear a goblin shriek. It sounds close by, almost directly ahead.

I'll draw my greatsword and cautiously walk forward, ready to swing at any hostile that jumps out at me.

Re: Tools of Chaos
As you walk forward you come into a clearing that smells faintly of sulfur. Ahead a goblin is fighting with a hafling sized spider. As you get there the spider bites the goblin, which goes stiff suddenly and falls backward, disappearing with a splash.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Wait to see if the spider has noticed me. If it has, I'll attack with the sword. If not, I'll try to get it with the crossbow.

You don't see any creatures, but after walking about 5 feet you do notice the hot springs below you where the goblin fell. However, the only thing you see in it appears to be a floating dish rag.

As you approach the remains of the goblin, the water seems to boil. You see two huge snake like things swimming in it, headed right towards you. What you thought was the goblin turned out to be part of the goblins loincloth.

Angus grits his teeth, and mutters an incantation while holding up a hand (casting shield of faith). Then he drops his sword and draws the crossbow.

The serpents advance. You see that they have fins and some type of gill, but seem able to handle the land, if a little slower. You have at most two rounds before they get to you. Take an additional (1d6)[5 ] strength damage.

Your shot goes wild, you find yourself wishing you were a ranger so you could know if the sound it just made was a snicker or not. You have one round until they close.
