Tools of Chaos

Examine the hinges and any other metal fittings carefully for any signs of weakness, using my dwarven intuition craft metalwork - (1d20+4)[10].

A spellcaster the maker of the chest was, a carpenter he was not. There is a gap about a half inch wide in one of the corners on the back.

I'll just use my artisan's tools to carefully take apart the chest, starting at the gap.

[INWranger]

You manage to take the chest apart without setting the trap off. Inside there is a broken arrow, a dagger missing its tip and a folded up document.

If Chamille is still there, ask her if she recognizes any of the items.

[INWranger]

She faded out awhile ago, presumably to do something else, or maybe appearing takes energy she uses to keep the necromancer/lich dead.

Examine the document.

[INWranger]

it looks like a schematic or instructions of some type for a two piece apparatus where there is a focus piece and then a detached receptacle. The receptacle could be the phylactery and the other piece the focus piece. It doesn't specify an object, but look like they would have to cme from the same object.

The necromancer was wearing an arrowhead shaped amulet. Take the amulet and see if it matches the broken arrow in the chest.

[INWranger]

It does not, but it looks similar to the dagger tip.

I'm going to venture that the broken dagger is the receptacle and the broken piece he is wearing is the key. Since I don't need to open the phylactery, just destroy it, I'll try using my tools to smash it.

[INWranger]

Using your tools you manage to break the dagger into several pieces. A flash of red light appears, followed by a sharp scream and then silence. The ghost of Chamille then appears. Thank you, now I can move on. Last I make this request that the dagger can never be one piece again. Take whatever you want. Heed the scarred elf. She then fades out, leaving you alone.

Put the robes, book, and the circlet in my backpack, stowing the tools as well. I'm guessing that the skeleton in heavy armor is Chamille. Angus would like to carry her to town for a proper burial, so he tries to scoop her up in his arms without letting the skeleton fall apart.

The skeleton falls apart when he tries to pick it up. Everything else cooperates.

Well, pack up the armor into my backpack. Carefully wrap the bones in the old robe to carry them.

[INWranger]

Your packing skills are most excellent. You also realized that your hour time limit is almost up.

On my way out, scoop up the shards of the broken phylactery, and head back to the village.

[INWranger]

By the time you get back to three rivers it is dark, and nothing has really happened since leaving the cave.

Take a room at the Tankard of Glory. Oh, and mention to the barkeep I have a message for Odegard Greenpants, if he happens to know the fellow.

[INWranger]

he gives you a startled look. Everybody knew him. An excellent wizard. You are about 2 years too late with any message. He was murdered and the assassin jumped off Assassins Bridge while making his escape. We think he was hit by arrows and don't know if he hit a rock or anything. We never heard from him again. They renamed the bridge the Memorial Bridge, but everyone calls it Assassins Bridge.

Show surprise. I am very sorry to hear that. May his soul rest in peace. Retire to my room and rest.

Your cloak of bones brings some odd stares, but nobody bothers you about it.
Take 1000 XP for the derro, opening the chest, etc.

Rest, sleep. In the morning spend the requisite time preparing spells, eating a hearty breakfast, and take Camille's bones to the church for burial.

The priest in charge is surprised, but recognizes the armor as Chamilles. He says that he will have her interred and thanks you.

I meant to grab Chamille's sword as well, but forgot to include taking it in my post. Do I need to go back and get it?

If I can retroactively assume that I have it, I'd like to visit Rothgar and thank him, then Elray and see what he can tell me about the dagger and sword.

I will assume that is the sword in the skeleton and the sword that Chamille had on her.
Rothgar is happy to hear of his friend and her heroic efforts to keep the lich at bay.
When you get to Elray's a lovely Elven maid named Alora, dressed in a smiths smock with red hair tied in a bun says that he is not in for assessments. However, she can do one on your items.

I would like her to examine the dagger I found on Odegard's assassin and tell me what is special about it.

[INWranger]

Beautiful custom job, and very well made. Excellent attack, with a special property if I am right. At this point she throws the dagger at a target on the wall 20 feet away, sticking it square in the center. Several seconds latter you see it fly back and return to her hand. You have no idea how good of a find this is. Now the swords. Generic masterwork longswords the last time I saw them. This one (the one found in the skeleton) seems to be different though. She casts a spell. Somehow it has picked up the ability to do extra damage to undead. Not Quite holy, but still deals more damage to them.
