As the title might give away, I'm interested to hear if anyone else here plays Planetside 2.
I got into it last week-ish and have been enjoying myself greatly. A really fun and surprisingly complex game, it's well worth checking out if you like MMO shooters at all.
For those who play, I play NC on Connery, BR14 right now. Just picked up a AC-X11 and am very excited to try things out. Looking for some advice about MAX weapon choices (they seem so damn expensive...).

There was a thread a while ago, but it died out just when we were starting to talk about a Playground outfit (likely TR).
I'm hoping we can still make one, don't really care which server.
Anyway, I've been playing NC on Connery, and I haven't been buying anything that costs more than 1 Cert because I'm trying to shoot straight for the Phoenix rocket launcher (I've tried the Phoenix and the Annhilator in VR Training, and I've decided that the Phoenix is more versatile, although I haven't tried following airborne targets that are actually flying. The Annhilator is absolutely terrible at close range because if you're around the corner from a tank, and that tank knows you're there, then stepping out and firing a quick shot is the only way you don't die).

What's your name on Connery? I'll send ya a friend request.
Actually, last night I managed a Scythe kill with the default rocket launcher. Felt pretty good about it. Haven't tried out the alternate launchers yet, I keep meaning to though.

I've managed a couple kills on pilots who were hovering there and firing at infantry.
First one was a Scythe. It was aiming right at me waiting for me to pop up from behind cover. I moved up over the rock, fired a rocket, and immediately went back down. Heard an explosion, then "Surface-to-air damage" flashed on my screen, then "Scythe kill" flashed on my screen. I started laughing at my luck.
Second one was against a Mosquito that was hovering near a launch pad and firing into a friendly base. Fired a rocket, managed to hit the tail, got the kill, earned me Guerilla 3.
Anyway, the game is pretty buggy. I dunno what's happening, but today, every time I try to play I get a game-breaking bug (and not the same one each time, although I'm getting a lot of "planetside2.exe has stopped working" or whatever the .exe one is).

Nice!
Mine was that the Scythe was strafing a few of my outfit members and was sorta doing low runs at us. I pop out the Shrike, crouched behind a tree, and took a blind guess as to when it was flying past. A few seconds later, there's a massive explosion and Scythe bits go flying past me. Felt great.

Edit: 'kay, now it's working.
Really? I've been having a fine time of it recently. Strange.
Anyhow, I may be on in a bit, when I'm done doing some work.

I can never predict where aircraft are going. Pilots, particularly Scythe pilots, have this nasty habit of not going straight. And it's hard to judge the rocket drop (I have that problem with long-distance tanks, too).
Also, does anyone know how to turn the jets on planes to hover? Just slowing down doesn't seem to do the trick.

Bummer. Blackwater Interstellar (my outfit) could use another man.

I know, right? Scythes must be insanely maneuverable or something, they all seem to slide sideways constantly.
Also, is there a way to compensate for rocket drop? It's deeply aggravating.

Man, I wish I knew. It'd be handy to know and would make landing Reavers somewhat easier.

I love the game, although I am on a temporary hiatus while my videocard is in the mail to be replaced.
I'm currently BR41 and a citizen of the glorious Terran Republic on the Waterson server. A member of Imperial Reach, one of the best online clans/outfits I've ever been a part of, we commonly lay waste to the cultists and corporate-sponsored terrorists that plague Auraxis.
Any TR on the Waterson server looking for a good outfit is welcome to PM me for details on joining if you so choose.
I've probably pumped about $60 into the game so far. Do I need to? No. I feel the need to vote with my wallet however and hope to see this game go far and be a great success.

Hm, maybe I'll make my TR character on Waterson.
I do want a guy for every faction, even if I later delete them, to test the faction weapons. NC is actually the hardest faction because the sniper rifles are the only weapons with decent accuracy at long ranges (there's a reason that my go-to class against unknown forces is the Heavy Assault, and my go-to class for fighting infantry is the Infiltrator). Maybe I should get the Warden, it's a semi-automatic Heavy Assault weapon (firing in bursts does wonders for the Gauss SAW's accuracy, but it's still not that good).
Been a bit since I played, but there is no "hover" mode or key that can maintain altitude in ESF. Libs and Gals hover naturally, reavers mossies and scythes drop at varying rates. That said, never hover. Especially in a reaver. If the odd surface to air dumb fire doesn't get you, you just take way too long to get up to speed.

Grrr, death to the Terran scum!!
Ok, but seriously, great to see someone else here plays. If I make a TR character I may go ahead and play on Waterson just to say hi to ya.

The Heavy Assault weapon I've been rocking is the GR-22. It's a pretty solid weapon, with actually good accuracy (ok, it's not a sniper, but it's pretty good).

Uh, then they must have changed it, because I saw a Reaver fly slowly really close, the engines turned, and it hovered. Granted, it was about five feet off the ground, but there was no way it was touching it. The Mosquito I killed was definitely hovering, it dropped to get out of line of sight of the guys it was firing on, but it was staying in position and maintaining altitude.
Scythes actually have different mechanics. I think they can strafe, and they can stop in midair without needing to do anything special (I once got killed by a Scythe that was hanging in midair, pointing downwards to fire at the infantry behind a rock formation).
No, what you likely saw the reaver pilot do was hold the throttle down/brake key. Holding that down will let you 'sit' so to speak just over the ground, but it doesnt work mid air. Good way to see it yourself is to start from the ground in third person and tap 'up', defaults to what space bar, and then hold your brake, which was S I think. Then try holding S at some high altitude for comparison.
Scythes are a little different but no they cant strafe, if one looked like he was its just a variation of the reverse turn I linked to earlier and anyone can do it. They dont truly hover either, they just fall very very slowly compared to other esf and reavers in particular. More so if they have the hover frame, however, they still cant park in mid air indefinitely like a gal or lib. They are dropping. Conversely, you can go down faster with your, er, control key than that scythe can.
If you tap your vertical thrust key, you can achieve a semblance of hovering in an ESF. If you are level with the horizon, you won't move forward. If you are pitched down, you will move forward a bit. If you are pitched up, you will move backwards.
Edit: TR of Waterson as well here. Most of my certs are spread between Engie, my tanks, and my Mossy. Also got a little love to my Sunderer and Lib.

Yeah, vertical thrust is always available and tied to spacebar and control (up and down, respectively), with the thrust being based on the aircraft's angle. So for the slow, hovering strafing runs - you hold S to slow right down, nose forward and tap spacebar to move forward while firing on the ground.
Having the thrust based on the aircraft's angle does open up some nifty tricks for mid-air manoeuvres - quickly rolling your fighter to the left onto a knife-edge (one wing skyward, one towards the ground) and holding spacebar can let you thrust to the left while still flying forwards, a burst of it after pulling vertical and slowing down might let you get behind someone on your six or just using it and control to weave through narrow canyons and the like.
As for my main - TR on Briggs here. Yep; I'm on the server where the TR consistently get their asses handed to them on a silver platter by endless, blue-and-gold hordes.

Brilliant D&D song from Aussie comedy band Tripod.
If anyone can find a better-quality version of that, let me know.
On Waterson, the TR usually does quite well. It's kinda funny. Despite being the most populous, I often find the NC not holding a single continent. The Vanu are well organized and will often hold a continent despite having less than 25% population.

The faction-linked characters in this game really bugs me. I was really digging the game when it first came out, but then I discovered that some of my friends had already invested a lot of time into characters in other factions, so playing with my friends was heavily disincentivized, which, you know, sucks.
It's not much different compared to other faction based PVP games. This one at least gives you some guns that are common pool that if you buy with station cash are available to all. So if you buy some goodies for your liberator or lighting, they can be used in cross faction play.

Anything brought with Certs ia tied purely to that character, but Station Cash items are available to any character that can use that item on your account ( normally all members of that faction, but Natite Systems (NS) weapons are usable by any faction).
so, for example, I got with SC the Skyguard AA gun for my Lightning light tank. any character i have can equip the Skyguard. But, each account would has to upgrade that gun on its own (ie, I buy zoom optics for it, it will only have zoom optics on that character).
bear in mind some vechicles that are NS (all faction) can mount faction only weapons. they are labelled as such now on the tooltips, so you should be aware of what will and won't be cross faction.
of coruse, if your not willing to put down RL cash for the game, then it's all rather achidemic anyway........
on an unrealted note: I Normally play NC on Ceres, but have a TR account on the same sever for when my outfit is quiet.
edit:
I realise that my phrasing is someone snobbish, so i will make clear here that no insult is intended to non paying players. I decided i like this game enough to give the developer money, and i really wanted some new guns to expand my options. lots of people feel otherwise. fair enough, i will just get to play with a few extra toys quicker than you.

VDRS on Waterson is probably the main reason Vainu can take and hold ground. . . No idea what he does in real live, but NotYourBro could probably be king of middle management if he tried. He's surprisingly very competent at getting random volunteers to work together well, and his outfit's gotten pretty huge.
Played PlanetSide 2 under the Vanu Sovereignty.
You'd think a noob-friendly faction would be a good starter for me. Nope.
I could should at some guys in the head, aimed down the sight, in burst fire, and yet, getting shot anywhere is my Achilles' heel. I could take cover, and it doesn't work. I'd be lucky to get a Kill Assist.

"Hey guys, when this base is done, everyone respawn at the warpgate; We're going to MAX-Crash The Crown!"
One of my buddies plays NC on the same server, him and his outfit were farming at our destination. According to him someone came over teamspeak and said, "Four 12/12 TR Galaxies incoming; They have the [IR] tag. Well, F***."
Easiest time I have ever seen or heard of anyone taking the crown during peak hours. 32 AI Maxes, 8 Engineers, 8 Medics. "Enemy Platoons" listed on the crown and after four minutes, almost the entirety of them were confined to their spawn.
I was constantly harassed by a single infiltrator that just KEPT getting away the entire fight. The last I saw of him he cloaked as I was bearing down on him before slipping through a door to the outside, the cheeky b******.
Great fun and I feel the need to say again that I've never seen the crown fall so easily so fast in all the months I've been playing!
my outfit did it in 6 mins a while back via air assault. I aggree it's currently the only real way to take that damm place.
i have a bit of a hate-on for The Crown, not becuase it is a tough as nails defensive position, but becuase it's a tough as nails defensive position that is strategicly worthless.
How many times have you seen the following?: a major push on Indar sweeps though the continent, and the other two factions are pushed back almost to their warpgates.....apart form the crown, which is sat serenely in the middle of a sea of hostile ground, unconcerned and unconquored. some time later, a counterattack regains the lost ground and the crown is reunited with it's owners territory.
what does this tell us? that holding the crown does not help you hold the surrounding areas.
thierfore, it's not worth the considerable effort needed to take it.
maybe the new, limited hex "paths" they are talking about will change this, and make the crown a place worth taking, rather than a pop-draining distraction.

Honestly the crown can take surrounding territory, so long that territory is Zurvan Amp. it's just the hive mind always goes for T.I. or Crossroads.
My outfit avoids the Crown like the plague. Every fight there seems to just stall, with the defenders holding the tower and the attackers holding all the roads leading up to it and the occasional tank charge down the center road. It never ends well.
I've been playing NC on Matherson as a member of the Black Arrows. We're a small spec ops outfit that likes to take on outfits twice our size.

My outfit has taken the Crown a few times, but we're sneaky bastards like that. Man, I do hate Crown fights though, almost as much as bio labs (though scattermaxes make bio labs more possible).

Fun fact: I became an Platoon lead in my outfit (Auraxian Guard) so I could avoid the crown; or at the least take targets around it intelligently.
