Silly Message Board GamesA forum for any kind of quote games, continuing story games, "What would you do if?" games, or whatever anyone comes up with. Old threads will now expire after one month.
Current Challenge: Design a spell (not a land) with no mana cost.
Judging should be up Monday, May 6th.
The purpose of this thread is to make custom cards for Magic, the Gathering. If you haven't heard of that, it probably won't appeal to you!
Each week, the current judge will post a challenge. You then need to make your very own magic card to fit that challenge. At the end of the week, the judge will select a winner, who becomes the judge for the next week.
Entries can be made at any time before the judging is posted.
In the event that a judge does not immediately post results on judging day, please allow them a 3-day grace period to post their results. If there are still no results 4 days after the judging day, anyone can announce a winner other than themselves.
Each entry must have at least a text representation of their card, in the following format:
Name Mana Cost
Type - Subtypes Rarity
Card text
Power/Toughness
For example:
Saint Ayilen, the Lunarblade 2WW
Legendary Creature - Human Knight M
Lifelink
When Saint Ayilen, the Lunarblade dies, put a legendary 4/4 white Spirit Knight creature token with flying and first strike named Saint Ayilen, the Lunarblade onto the battlefield.
4/4
You may also post an image representation of your card if you wish, but make sure you also post the text version, in case of issues with hosting or image clarity.

Aetherwrought Quickblade 3
Artifact - Equipment R
Flash
When Aetherwrought Quickblade enters the battlefield, attatch it to to target creature you control.
Equipped creature gets +1/+0 and has First Strike.
If equipped creature would be put into a graveyard from play, return both it and Aetherwrought Quickblade to their owner's hand instead.
Equip 2
I'm not sure I worded it perfectly, but I think I got the intent across. The flavor here is an ethereal blade that can instantly blink into or out of existence, providing a surprise advantage or whisking the wielder out of danger. I wanted to try and make an equipment with a bit more nuance than is usually seen. I'd actually love to hear some early feedback and/or criticism on this, if it isn't too much to ask

@Frankelshtein: Sorry, no comments before the judging is over. Also, please don't comment on or critique each other's entries before the deadline is up. Of course, you can do whatever you want via PM, I just don't want it to affect the judging.
However if there is something that's blatantly wrong, such as an issue with formatting or not meeting the challenge, I'll point that out myself before judging. If you think someone's entry is violating one of the rules, please send me a PM and I'll look it over. Issues with wording are part of the challenge, so do your best to get it right!

...That seems rather counter intuitive. Shouldn't we try to balance them, or improve the cards? Also, if you don't want comments, or have a specific idea for how the contest should be run, it should be in the OP. Finally, why only one judge? Why not just let anyone volunteer to judge, like in the Iron Chef Optimization challenge, to help prevent bias?

Long winded explanation:
Spoiler
Lots of discussion and comments on the cards tends to flood the thread with 6 different lines of discussion that become very hard to follow, and the 7 other people who's cards aren't getting any comments tend to feel like they have an unfair disadvantage.
That kind of thing is more appropriate in a thread just dedicated to creating and discussing cards, which anyone is free to make, but isn't what this thread is about.
As for judging, as stated in the first post the winner of each round becomes the judge for the next round. This keeps the game flowing, and makes it so that if, for example, I randomly fell of the face of the earth, the game will keep going on without any issues.
Having multiple judges doesn't work very well due to the rapid nature of the game, having to organize 2-3 people each week to come to a consensus on cards make it exponentially more likely that someone will forget or not have time or otherwise be unable to judge, causing unnecessary delays.
All of these rules are long-standing rules from the Magic Set Editor forums, which has been hosting dozens of these types of games for 4 years now, including some games that have been going continuously from the start. These are the rules that have been developed over that time, and have proven quite effective.
Of course, this is a different community, so different rules might work better, but I thought we should start with the tried and true methods before we shake things.
Too few restriction IMHO. Just 'make an equipment card' with no other requirements means far too many options. That said, I'll give this a shot.
Imagine a picture of a Ib Halfheart style goblin holding a shiny but worthless rock and staring at it, completely ignoring the battle raging around him.
Shiny Bauble 1
Artifact - Equipment UC
Equipped creature cannot block and gets -1/-0
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent's creature you may un-equip Shiny Bauble. If you do so, equip Shiny Bauble to target creature an opponent controls.
Equip 1 "Ohh. Shiny." - Unnamed Goblin
Basic idea is a piece of equipment you want to get on your opponent's creatures. To that end it makes them worse at attacking and makes them unable to block. The 'cannot block' and -1/-0 applies to your creatures too so as to make this less annoying. It basically gives your opponent a choice, block and lose a blocker for the future, or let it through, which obviously has its own disadvantages.
Cheap and simple effect, but somewhat complicated in how it uses the rules. I pegged it at uncommon based on complexity, but I could easily see a drop down to common.

Equipped creature can't be blocked by more than one creature and can only attack alone.
Equip 3
A weapon that causes things to fight! Since it can turn into a repeatable removal spell, the equip cost is relatively high to balance it a bit. Quite a house in Limited, it's not the flashiest card ever but it has its uses. Pretty sure putting First Strike on it would be too much, however I feel it might fit. Of course, probably not very good in Flavor Draft, where you can't make all your Wurms wield it.

Very interesting. It's not all too powerful on it's own, but it allows you to protect your creatures from permanent death. And of course, first strike and +1 power are nothing to sneeze at, so even without shenanigans it's a fine equipment.

This seems pretty meh overall. It gives protection from the least numerous type of card in the game, and is only relevant if said planeswalker would actually want to target it. At best, it's a +3/+3 equipment, which would be fine if it was common or even uncommon, but as a rare it doesn't cut it by a mile.

Very silly. It's actually really bad, it's essentially a "can't block" enchantment that takes a bunch of work to get it on. I like the flavor, but the implementation doesn't live up to it.

Equip 3
The "can only attack alone" bit seems unecessary. Other than that, I like it. It's complicated enough to be uncommon but not powerful enough to be rare. Since this doesn't have first strike itself, it keeps it from being absurd removal in limited, though if you can equip it to a creature that's already got first strike, it can be great for picking off enemy creatures one by one, which I assume is it's purpose.

This seems like a really, really bad card. It's exactly as likely to screw you over as it is your opponent, so in the end you come out even...except you had to spend a card and mana to use this, so you end up behind overall. It could be OK if you put it on an indestructible creature, but even then...well let's just say Creepy Doll isn't exactly an popular card.

Interesting concept, but far too powerful. It allows you to play any creature in your deck for it's mana cost once each turn. It allows you to, for example, play a Fusion Elemental for 5 colorless mana, and attack with it. Or you can pull out any number of creatures with ETB attacks, like Stonehorn Dignitary, every single turn for the rest of the game. And since they're sitting in your library for your opponent's turn, they've even got a good amount of protection from your opponent's removal.
This might be OK with a 6+ mana card, but at 3 it comes out fast, and being an equipment it's hard for most decks to deal with at the very least until post-board.

Second place: Duelist's Foil by tgva8889!
A very solid entry, and a great card to spice up limited. I'd love to see this or something similar be printed at some point. However there were some minor issues and isn't quite the quality for constructed.
First Place: Aetherwrought Quickblade by Frankelshtein!
Loved this entry, a great rare equipment with many uses, but not so powerful that it'll dominate the game, which is important. Still, it will definitely have at least a few decks in which it really shines, for example it could go well in Birthing Pod decks at least, and possibly some other combo decks. It could even create it's own combo decks using stuff that sacrifices itself to deal damage. It even makes for an infinite damage combo with Puresteel paladin, Mortarpod, and Memnite. (All cards that work well together regardless)
Next week's contest will start as soon as this week's winner posts the next challenge. Judging will occur a week after that.

Good examples are Darksteel Reactor, Laboratory Maniac, Helix Pinnacle, and Battle of Wits. Any type of card is allowed, so go crazy. Just remember too keep it balanced and fun!
I look forward to seeing what you all come up with!

Not anywhere near sure of the numbers on this one, cost, P/T or number of counters. Shroud is there so it doesn't just get bolted at 14 counters, your opponents need to wrath to get him. Making it a creature rather than enchantment/artifact dodged the tricky problem of Wrath effects putting a lot of counters on it. One sided Wraths still work great, but those tend to be very expensive.
Inspiration was the fact that I couldn't find any black alternate win condition cards.
Flavor is basically a demon who needs a certain number of souls to complete his ritual, so he demands some from you every upkeep and also steals your opponents.

Whenever a player takes damage prevent that damage and instead put that many territorial counters on that player.
During each upkeep each player removes all their territorial counters if they have an even amount, and all but one if they have an odd amount.
The player then targets a land he controls per 2 counters he has removed in this way, that land is now controlled by the opponent.
If a player at any time has no lands, that player loses the game.
I'm gonna be against the flow here and say outlined.
What? Everyone else are against the flow too, okay?

Reason: Clarifying wording/intent
Can someone make multiple submissions? I want to, but since I already submitted, I don't think I can submit another.
Also, we cannot comment on this weeks cards in thread, but can we comment by PM (I should have asked that earlier), and/or on previous weeks?
You can edit your entry to a new version, but you can't have more than one entry for each contest. Instead you should focus on making the entry you did make as good as it can be.
Please don't start discussion about the cards here. I know it feels like you'd be helping, but in the end it hurts the contest and causes problems for everyone. This goes for the current contest as well as previous contests.
You can do anything you want in a PM, and if you want to discuss an old card in the main MtG thread, that's fine too.

I like this card. It's easy to understand, and has the potential to be quite powerful in certain decks. Adding counters from opponent's creatures makes it effective, but the sacrifice element keeps its power level in check nicely. It's powerful enough to be dangerous, but comes with just enough of a drawback to make it difficult to resolve.

I like the concept here, but I'm not so sure about the execution. As it stands, the card wins the game as soon as it or the fifth creature hits the board, which isn't very fun for the opponent because it can feel very "out of nowhere". Something like an "At the beginning of your upkeep, you win the game if..." or some sort of condition that gives the opponent some time to react would go nicely here.

This card strikes me as an extremely creative win condition. It encourages a wildly different play style, using cards that one would typically want to avoid at all costs. That being said, I have slight concerns about power level. It feels like you could slap down a turn-4 Eater of Days, and sit back and smile as your opponent struggles to kill you through your 9/8 flyer. Then again, having this card being three turns as opposed to two would make it exceedingly difficult to resolve. Regardless, it's a fine entry.

This card is conceptually interesting, being an extension of the "I play this giant creature and I win" archetype (a la Progenitus and Emrakul). First and foremost, it's very important that you expand upon the "exiled or sent to graveyard" clause, as it is quite ambiguous as it is currently. If I exiled it from my library with Selective Memory, would I still get the counters? Also, I'm not quite sure if/how counters interact with players. Second, I'm concerned about how powerful it is. Progenitus and Emrakul will win you the game, but they can still technically be stopped, whereas this card will win no matter what. It just seems absurdly powerful when used with cards such as Through the Breach, and is a crazy-good reanimator target. Overall, I like the concept, but I think the execution could have been better.
EDIT: Alright, finishing up. My apologies for taking so long.

I'm not so sure about this one. The wording is a tad confusing, and the overall feeling I'm getting is "blatantly un-fun". A cheap instant that can turn a win into a loss just doesn't seem like something that would be good for the game.

This card is interesting in theory, but I can't really see it playing out well. It seems to me that the person who gets damage through first (probably the person who played the card) will start to "snowball", stealing more and more of the other player's lands, leaving the opposing player manaless and unable to do anything. I like the flavor here, but I'm not sure how well this card would work in actual play.

I admit, I love me a good Lich effect. However, I am having a bit of trouble understanding this one. So the idea is to lose just enough life that you sacrifice all of your permanents except the card itself? If I'm getting that right, I love the play you could see with it. I can imagine a very high risk/reward deck being build around this. The text is a tad confusing and could use some cleaning up, but it's a very complicated card. It's silly in all the right ways.

Intuitive, creative, and just the tiniest bit abusable. This is the kind of card I'd want to build a deck around in a heartbeat. It appeals to the Johnny in everyone.
