Hi guys, this is the OOC thread for the game "The Red Hands". Time has fortunately been on my side today and I've already put up the IC thread. Please throw a post on this thread so that I know you're here and claim a color (except black or red) for your character's speech text. Please choose a color that's easy to read. Below are some some guidelines for the game. Give them a read and make sure you don't have any problems with them. If you do, let me know and we'll work through it. Since the IC thread is already up, head over there and introduce your character and we'll get underway!
1. Posting Frequency
Please subscribe to the OOC and IC threads so you don't miss out on posts. Thanks!
I've asked for daily or at least 5 times per week. Naturally, this is not always possible so here's what I'm going to implement for the time being. In the name of keep the game moving when we're in combat, please post within roughly 30 hours of your turn starting. If you don't, I'll take over to keep things moving. My move will be to use an at-will power on the target you were attacking, or if that target is dead/out of range, whatever target is closest. If this happens more than once or twice in the first combat I'll likely bump it up to 48 hours, but I'd like to try to keep a good pace going.
If we're relying on you to do something outside of combat, you have 48 hours. After that, I'll take over. I made this longer because it's a lot more invasive to make an actual decision for your character than to control him or her for a round in combat. Again, I can bump this up if need be.
After a week of not posting without notice and if you don't reply to PMs, I'll do what's necessary to move the game forward. This may include removing your character from the game. Hopefully this is not necessary for anyone.
If somebody has to stop posting for a while, please PM me with as much notice as possible. Better yet, post on this thread so we are all aware. We'll work to find the best solution for the situation whether it's pausing for a brief period, asking a fellow player to control your character temporarily, replacement (worst case scenario), etc.
Sort of related to posting frequency, I will make occasional checks for you like a perception or insight check. When I do make a check for someone I'll mention it in my post. The reason I would do this is purely for game pace. PBP lends itself to being a slower format compared to a live game obviously. I really don't think you guys want me to have everyone post a roll for perception every time you enter a new room or have you all post a roll for stealth to see if you entered a room silently. If someone really feels strongly against me making occasional checks like this let me know; I'm willing to be flexible on this for individual players.
2. Initiative
So for our first encounter my plan is to run things as a live game would. I'll determine initiative order by rolling for every character including yours. (Please make sure your initiative bonus is correct on your character sheet.) During combat I'll post all actions that monsters take and I'll end each post by mentioning who's turn is up. If this method turns out to be too slow for PBP I have an alternative that we can try in our second encounter.
3. Combat
For combat, when you post your actions please include both your attack rolls and damage rolls so that if I post that you successfully hit we aren't waiting for you to then post damage afterward. What I'm thinking for now is that when I go to check your actions, if you've attacked, but didn't include a damage roll I'll make the damage roll for you. I mentioned it in the Big 16, but for a reminder we're just going to use the forum roller.
4. Dialogue
For those that are new to Play-by-Post, here's how dialogue works. A character's words and thoughts are in a certain color. We also need a visual difference between thoughts and spoken words. Here's how I'll have you guys do it:
Thoughts: Colored Italics - What does he think he's doing? Dakaran thought to himself, walking towards John.
Speech: Colored with or without Bold - "What do you think you're doing?" Dakaran said, walking towards John.
Color choice is first come first serve. Choose a unique color (other than black since that'll be used for all text that isn't communication and other than red as I'm claiming that for the leader of the Red Hands) for your character.
5. Tracking stuff
You guys are responsible for tracking your own stuff, with the sole exception of hit points and conditions, which I will include on the battle map. You guys track powers, healing surges, second winds, action points, money, etc. I'll be tracking everything relevant for the monsters. You all did notice that you started with 130 gold instead of the usual 100, right?
6. Communication
Not sure if you should send me a message about something that's bothering you? Do it! Communication is very important. I would much rather have something I do criticized than to continue to do it and ruin everybody's fun, maybe even having someone drop out. I'm not going to kick anybody out for it, or punish their character, or any stupid petty stuff like that. As long as you're civil, say what you like; I'm just another player. I want this game to work and not fall by the wayside as so many PBP games do. I will work my hardest to see that this game succeeds.
If you have any questions, be sure to ask me. This post is by no means comprehensive. If there's a problem, we can work through it together.
Thanks!
Dakaran
(special thanks to Salivanth for the general outline you see above. He DMed a game not too long ago for me and I appreciated his guidelines so I thought I'd adapt them for my own.)
Woohoo! Checking in and claiming Dark Orchid as Sariel's speech.
Also, thanks for choosing Sariel. And in relation to Initiative Sariel gives every ally within 10 who she can see and hear +2. Going to check out IC now.

Thanks for accepting Zachar. With so many late striker submissions I didn't really think I'd get picked. I think Zachar will be speaking in Blue.
Do you want us to include Sariel's init. bonus on our sheets or not (normally I wouldn't since it is conditional, but if you want it I'll add it in).
You're welcome.
Nope, just leave your initiative bonus as what it would be without Sariel's bonus and I will just take the +2 into account for everyone, but Sariel. I've got a DM sheet that I've got a quick reference for all of your inits, defenses, HP, etc.
Oh, something to think about for you all: I don't know if all of you took a look at the demo battle map that I linked to in the registration thread, but I would like to use OotS style "tokens" on the battle maps. To that end, I would appreciate it if you all could send me an token that you would like to use in combat for your character. (It doesn't necessarily need to be OotS style if you have a different preference.) Alternatively, if you don't have an image that you want to use and don't want to request one on the Arts & Crafts thread let me know and I'll worry about finding a token for your character. Thanks!
Dakaran- Okay, Token wise for combat. I don't have an image I'm particularly bothered by using, maybe one of the armoured/warrior elf images from the OOTs list...but I don't know how to get that to you, or if you can get it yourself...I would draw one myself but I am awful at art, although I may try to draw one anyway later on.

I can get the images from the default OotS avatars no problem if that's what you want to use. I'll try to commission a token for your character, but in the meantime I'll probably just use this if that's cool with you:

That image is cool with me...where would I commission a token from by the way? Is there somewhere on the OOTS forum...I may just not have noticed it?
Looking forward to the game

There is actually. You could either start a new thread asking if there is anyone that would be willing to make a token/avatar for you here on the Arts and Crafts Forum or you could make a request for one in the Request and OotS Style Avatar thread. The latter is probably the better/easier route.
Cool!
I'll request an avatar now!
Also, I have a question. I'm going over Sariel's sheet to make sure everything's okay and I noticed something. She has the Eladrin Soldier feat which means she gets +2 to all damage with a longsword...do I include that +2 in the damage I deal with my At Will, Encounter and Daily damage or is it just with a basic attack?
Cheers

You'll add +2 damage to any damage roll you have for an ability that you use your longsword with, regardless of its type. So yes, all of your At Will, Encounter, and Daily powers (including basic attack) that have the keyword "Melee" will use your longsword (assuming that's the weapon in your hands) and thus give you the +2 feat bonus damage. (The same is true for spears since the feat is for spears and longswords.)
Just got an awsome avatar for Sariel here's the links given- complete pic and two cropped versions. I like the complete one or the first cropped, but whatever works best for your map action. 120x120 pixels Cropped 1 Cropped 2

Nice! That looks awesome. We'll try the whole image and if that doesn't look good on the battle map let me know once we enter combat and I'll try one of the cropped ones.
I'm the guy in our group that uses the same mini for everything no matter what character I happen to be playing. Heck, I'm just as happy using a spare d6 to represent my character if a mini's not available.
Still, I'll go ahead and request a picture of Zachar in the thread you posted and see if anything comes from it.

Sounds good!
On an unrelated note, at anytime in our campaign if anyone feels as though their character doesn't need to do or say anything at a certain point, like now for example, where we're not in combat just let me know in the OOC thread so that I know not to wait for you to move on. (I'm not commenting on the current state, it was just a thought I had that I forgot to mention earlier.)
Hey all, I just posted a rather large post in the IC thread and we are now heading into combat with tigerusthegreat leading the order. I decided to narrate us through investigating the camp site as I actually hadn't even initially thought of that, but for some great roleplay and questions I decided to give you guys some details that I hadn't initially planned on giving out. Anyway, I'm just mentioning that I narrated us through the camp in case anyone feels as though I'm moving the pace too quickly. If several of you feel the pace is too quick I'll know to slow up and let you explore more in the future. I do have some plot points detailed, but I'll do what I can to avoid straight up railroading and try to "say yes" as much as I can.
So hopefully the battle map is making sense to everyone. Just as general note, the excavation pit in the middle of the map which is marked out by the words "DROP" is 5 feet lower than the surrounding area. Unless you are at the edge of the excavation pit, ranged attacks will take a penalty as creatures in the pit will have partial cover. Analash's attack however is fine since it's an area of effect attack and isn't targeting a specific creature.
Also, just to make sure, the bottom row of the map is row 12 and the far right column of the map is column L. Analash is starting in D11, which is fine since tigerusthegreat didn't move Analash so we'll just say that Analash moved from D12 onto the difficult terrain at D11 as her move action.
And darn, I was hoping that shaft was deeper than 7 points of damage worth. At least it'll take a little bit of time for that kobold to get out...was considering using an action point to drop another howling wind to pull the other slinger down into it as well, but am glad I didn't.
Playing a controller is weird...It takes twice as long to look through my options as any other type

No worries, it works out.
Well, the shaft is 20 feet deep so it's 2d6 worth of damage. I'd say for the depth, 7 points of damage is pretty decent. Nice trick too with the Chill Wind. I totally didn't think about someone using a ranged ability to drag the kobolds into the shaft. That was a solid opening move.
It was either that or using another burst ability to kill off some mooks, and I feel that Analash would use the environment to her advantage.
Was trying to figure out a way to slam some kobolds into a wall for extra damage or fling them over the 5 ft drops, but then I saw the hole. I do like the options of controller, and if I would have known you hadn't thought of the hole, I would have burnt the action point to drop the other one I moved into the hole just for lols. I only wish this were a tabletop game, so I could see the look on your face.
Now I have a new mission...to do the things you do not expect me to. MUAHAHAHAHAHA
And combat is joined! Stirling opening turns people, especially dragging that kobold into the shaft tigerus!
Dakaran- map looks good, I like the mix of terrain- makes things more interesting/challenging.
Just as a point of tactics- Sariel's built to give extra power bonuses to attacks/Opportunity Attacks so will be up front where she can target the nasties, and heal our controller, who's taken a bit of kicking!

The best thing about 4e is that it's very easy to do your job and look good doing it.
My warlord made a running leap into a river to land on top of a goblin, drag him underwater, and kill him before he could finish running away...very cinematic and fun.
And yes...the opener of this fight being a kobold getting blown down a 20ft mine shaft is fun. I'll have to play a controller more often.
Druids are built around using OAs, so you shoudl stick with me
