Dragonlance is a setting of epic battles between good and evil and smaller, human decisions made by everyday people under difficult circumstances. I choose to embrace the latter for good drama and character development.
This campaign is not about dungeon-delving, slaying dragons, or leading armies against powerful tyrants. At least that’s not where I’m leading it. But if certain PCs want to do those things, then it’s up to them to make it happen. I want the PCs to live and learn and work toward their ultimate goals – and advance via adventuring.
Please note: I emphasize story and character over mechanics. I will ignore rules at times or gloss over events or actions to keep things going smoothly. If I make a mistake, feel free to mention it if you think it’s important. If I made a mistake in your favor, you might want to ignore it.
Otherwise, I welcome thoughts, suggestions and complaints. If I don’t hear that you think I’m doing something wrong (or right!) I can’t react.
Please be patient and take advantage of RP opportunities. The last DL game I ran contained whole sessions of nothing but the PCs sitting around a table talking about their personal philosophies on morality and religion. Obviously because of the PbP format I'll have to move things along, but be aware I'm willing to spend time on any and all character whims or issues (to various degrees, of course).
Posting rules
Please be polite and bring interpersonal problems directly to me. I reckon you can use whichever color for speech you want, but place character thoughts in italics. Please don't make whole lines of text bold. It's annoying.
Rolls should be put in relevant IC posts within spoiler boxes, like so:
At the beginning of this game, the PCs are traveling via ship to the Abanasinian city of Staughton. They should have their own reasons for being there - they're residents, they're looking for family, they want schooling or simply want to start anew.
Beyond PC reasons for coming to the city, and to help us all out, you can go ahead and make Int, GI, Kno (local) or related checks to determine what you know of the city before arrival.
For ease and simplicity's sake, I'll be basing much of the campaign in this city, but there's really nothing stopping PCs from traveling, and I promise some adventures will call for it.

I'll go with a nice Navy for Perelias's speaking color, unless anyone else feels really strongly about that color.
Also, Tius and Toliudar, be warned; Perelias has a rather high charisma for a wizard, and you're both playing female characters. I'm not going to say what I'm warning you about, though, but I suspect you can guess.

Perelius is a wizard too? Looks like he and Bookhead are going to be best friends. And they can stay up late telling stories of cool wizard things they can do, and swap spells from their spellbooks, and discuss finer points of arcane lore. *insert evil laugh here*
I call Orchid.

FYI - I'm already familiar with Toliudar's PC because he played it in a game with me a couple years ago, but the link he gave me is inaccessible for some reason.
So I'm just waiting to hear confirmation from him before initiating the IC thread.
Be sure ya'll actually read the info I supplied in the OP.

Yep, I read all that. I'm looking forward to our game of dungeon-crashing, dragon-slaying, kingdom ruling super-optimized PC's with tons of combat and no roleplaying.

As you discover information about the city (and in general) I will add it to the wiki when I get it up and going.
Perelias
Spoiler
Local: I don't know where you're from but you've certainly heard of the city of Staughton. An average Abanasinian city, it's completely self-governed and tends to distance itself from the influence of greater kingdoms and organizations, though not trade and relations. It's run by your typical mayor and advisors, but is also known to possess soem sort of ruling noble class with its own knighthood. Every year it holds a great celebration called the festival of Spring Dawning.

Spoiler
GI: As a seasoned traveler you passed through Staughton's port years ago, but do not recall it being much different from a hundred other places. From what you've been able to discern from local sources (the sailors abourd the Gull's Wing) the city is growing in wealth and population faster than it can manage. They regale you with countless names you can't remember. Of particular importance to them is a tavern called The River Cutter and the increasing tension between big businesses for the city's trade - the Ergothian Merchant Marine, the minotaurs' Clan Athak, the Teyr Trading Company and local Pherrik family, which owns a number of ships - including this one.

Wow. You know a lot. I'll boil it down and put more on the wiki when I get the chance.
Staughton was settled just after the Cataclysm and has managed to slowly grow and prosper ever since. It's a big trade town. There's an annual festival called Spring Dawning that you're familiar with. It has its own nobles and its own knighthood. You've heard that during the Chaos War wizards and all sorts of magical creatures - even dragons! -flew around in the air defending the city! You've also heard that a very, very, very old human named Vendu Maskalar is just about the richest guy in the whole world and once sailed through something called the Maelstrom, which was like a big hole in the ocean.

Okay, I've got some questions about Dragonlance before I post. Remember, I've never read any of the books or played in a campaign in this world. I know only very loose details, and I'm not confident that those are correct.
1. Gilean seems like he's the Boccobian-style True Neutral God of Magic, but there's also the three moon deities, including Lunitari, who is also a True Neutral God of Magic. What's up with their relationship?
2. Do wizards actually draw power from them, like clerics, or is it more of a metaphorical relationship?
3. Where does sorcerous power come from? Dragon or fae or demon blood, like in Greyhawk or the Forgotten Realms, or something else entirely?
4. How common are spellcasters? What is the public's general reaction to seeing someone cast a spell?
5. How easy is it to find a place to purchase scrolls in the average town or city?
Sorry about all the questions, but it'll be a huge help to know more about this world.

1 - No. Gilean is a god of wisdom, but not magic. Only the three moon gods have anything to do with arcane magic, and each (good, neutral, evil) is the god of one branch of the Orders of High Sorcery (who are actually all wizards).
2 - Um ... yes? They do get magic from the gods, but not by praying or anything. Just by practicing and furthering magic in the world.
3 - Sorcerous power is kinda residual radiation from the creation of the world. Since it's just kinda out there doing whatever, it's not controlled like godly moon magic and thus is not trusted by wizards (because it has the potential to go crazy).
4 - Uncommon, and depending on where you are, commoners might be anything from mistrustful to outright terrified. On the other hand, everyone knows magic exists, they just have no understanding of it. This goes into the whole "what kind of wizard do you want to be" thing and with the three Robes. A wizard in a white robe and one in a black robe are probably going to get very different receptions around town.
This isn't Eberron. In Dragonlance when people see magic performed they usually assume their lives are about to be ruined. It's like walking down a street in Manhattan when the Avengers show up: You just know your day is screwed.
5 - Just as easy as in FR. Every small town is likely to have a magic shop, and villages too small to have that may have some hedge wizard or some such who buys and sells for his own purposes. Staughton is a small city and has a number of such stores of varying stock and professionalism. (Ok, only one the PCs will really use, because it's the best.)
This was posted in the previous thread, but for simplicity - check out the Nexus.

Whoo. Busy weekend and I want to give folks some more time to respond. Not sure how everyone will react, which is kinda the point - I want to guage where the characters are in thir responsiveness.

The beginning of a game sure is a terrible time for the forums to go down; and in the years that I've been here, I've never seen it go down; especially not like that. With that said, I can't wait to pick up where we left off. Shall we?

Is the room dark enough to hamper vision, or is it just thematically gloomy?
It does hamper vision. However, if you want to use some sort of illumination the hold is so crowded and movement limited that in most cases a light source will negate any darkness penalty, but only for five to ten feet.

That's what magic is for, my dear Gorgon. It has no such limitations.

We've heard from Toliudar, and I don't want to wait forever. I'll post up tonight or tomorrow but I want to give Salmon some breathing room if he's still around.
