The book allows for both. Normalcy is the one very specific echo that makes the fetch appear to be a normal human to all fae magic.
However, for Thanqol's story, I felt it was important that Stephanie's fetch lack that particular quality. Unlike so many, Stephanie went to Faerie willingly and she was having a good time there. What made her come back is that her fetch was doing a bad job being her. I felt that the keeper's shoddiness in making a fake Stephanie should carry through to all aspects of the fetch.

The other way to do it, which was the only way I really considered before, was having the Fetch look and act so human that the Changeling starts seriously wondering which of them is the 'real' one.
See, me too, but the fetch has to get a specific power to let that happen. Granted, it's the single easiest power for the fetch to have, but still.

Of course, on the other handhoof hand, now Stephanie gets to see a coat rack that the whole world thinks is her. She gets a clear, "No, I'm me!" image to cling to, but now she has to watch everypony she ever knew or loved completely ignore that image. Quite a tradeoff.
you'd be one hell of a grimdark ST, Phoe. I'll have to talk Thanqol into wrangling you into the position one day. Or ask nicely... Yeah, asking nice will be Plan A.
On the other indeterminable limb, Stephanie is a fighter of the best sort. She does the right thing because the wrong thing just doesn't occur to her, and that kind of positive momentum is phenomenal. If anypony here can see this less as a nightmare and more as an injustice to be righted, it's our Stephanie. She is hard wired, soft wired and possibly quantumly focused on heroism and happy things.
Just a note in case you all didn't catch it. Stephanie strengthened her mask during this conversation. So all of you see her as a young blond girl right now.

Darn. I thought I was going to be clever by bringing that up
I also thought Marchande would be the first to try that. Good thing no one took that bet >>
For extra fun; doesn't the fetch sound exactly like Stephanie? So we just heard a snarl and then she started yelling at herself? Plus whatever happened IC since I last checked - work I actually work-ish today! It's engaging, plus I'm learning about myself. Very cool.
EDIT: Thanqol you are best big sister.
Thanqol, will you be my big sister? Product may include eight years of spontaneous aging and unexplained sex/gender switch.

Thanks for pointing this out, made me understand that decision much better.

Sure! Add it to the relationship diagram.

True, actually. There's no version of her that is self interested, cowardly, or persistently miserable.
Low Clarity Stephanie, when she breaks, she breaks in place. She'll just progressively lose sight of everything outside her worldview. The collapse from being a dreamer into being a dream.

Stephanie has a strong enough sense of "Nope. You're a creation of evil magic, of course I'm the real me " to never doubt her sense of self.
The question is much more, "Well, you are a conjuration of evil magic... but if I destroy you I basically have to stop being a hero and get a day job "

Hmm. Interesting. I am having some trouble interjecting here, but that's a combination of not wanting to hoof-in-mouth so hard again, and expecting someone to post before me XD
I think I'm going to follow fairy take logic here. This is Stephanie's house. You can't break in to your own house. Stephanie doesn't have a key, but Charlotte does. If the key opens the door then it's okay to open the door with the key.
Which means discrete conjuration and trivial reworking, since making a key fit an unknown lock is one of the specifically allowed examples of the contract. I'll wait a while to see if you want to veto this though, since you'll be up and able to respond during the expected morning lull. *wonders if stuff is happening now*
Which reminds me; Anarion, I have a digital copy of the book with my contracts in it. Would you like me to put the full text up for them? It's not like I have a dearth of time.

Sure, I'd like to see the exact text of the contracts, always useful. Conjuring a key seems like it will work fine, although depending on how current events go, by the time you get up there, Stephanie might just open the door for you.
Also, a warning to everyone. You may want to cover your dice. I'll resolve Stephanie's action when I get home tonight and have the book.

Contracts of Forge
Spoiler
Rewriting the Image (•)
The changeling can alter the details of any twodimensional*image, including paintings, photographs and video clips. The basic form of the image cannot
be changed but all of the details can be, allowing the*changeling to transform an image of one person into*the image of someone else. This clause cannot alter
writing — the changeling could twist the face in a*driver’s license or political ad, but not alter the birth*date or campaign slogan.
Cost: 1 Glamour Dice Pool: Wyrd + Expression Action: Instant Catch: The changeling is changing an image of*someone else into the changeling’s own image.
Roll Results Dramatic Failure: The image is changed in some*manner that is detrimental to the changeling or her
immediate goals. Failure: The Contract fails, and the image remains*unchanged. Success: The image that is the target of this clause*shifts and alters, but retains its basic form. An ID photo
remains a close-up image of someone’s face, but the*changeling can determine whose picture is on this ID.
Similarly, a grainy and dimly lit video of a robbery remains*a grainy video of a robbery, but the changeling
could replace blurry faces with clearly visible ones of*her choice, or if the individuals shown were already
clearly visible, it could show a different robber, a different*victim or both.
This clause works equally well on still and video*images, and can be performed upon any single image*or video regardless of size. However, affecting the image*in a TV program changes only the image shown*on one particular TV set; the images shown on other
TV sets are unaffected. All changes last for the duration*of the scene.
This clause can affect everything from an ID photo*to a large billboard, and the image appears to be*authentic even under magnification or careful observation.*However, this clause affects only photographs
or videos; it has no effect on drawing, paintings or*printed words and explicitly cannot be use to change*the denomination of paper money. Exceptional Success: The change to the image is*permanent.
Suggested Modifiers
[table=head]Modifier |Situation
–1 |The image is larger than the changeling.
–1 |The changeling is affecting a broadcast image.
–1 to –5 |–1 per six seconds of moving footage being altered.
+1 |The changeling touches the photograph, poster,*DVD or videotape.
Trivial Reworking (••)
The changeling can temporarily reshape a small*object in relatively minor ways. Cost: 2 Glamour Dice Pool: Wyrd + Crafts Action: Instant Catch: The changeling is reshaping an item that*she stole from someone so that the changeling can use*it against this person.
Roll Results Dramatic Failure: The object breaks in the process*of reshaping itself and can no longer be used for*any purpose. Failure: The Contract fails, and the object is unharmed. Success: The changeling can take any object of*Size 1 that she can easily hold in one hand, and reshape*it to into a similar object. The changeling could*transform a house key to be the key to another house,*including the one she is standing in front of. She could*instead reshape a stolen driver’s license so that it has*her picture on it and contains whatever name and other*information she wishes, and she could even transform*this license into a corporate ID card or the official*ID of an FBI agent. In addition, she could reshape
a .45 bullet so that it becomes a 9mm pistol bullet that*can be fired from a 9mm pistol. However, this clause
cannot change objects in more extensive ways. A key*to a piece of luggage could not be transformed into a*house key, and a driver’s license could not be made
into a credit card. A house key must remain a house*key; an ID card must remain some sort of ID card. In*addition, these changes cannot be used to alter any*electronic data stored in the item.
These changes last for only one scene. Also, carefully*examining the object reveals that it is a clever*fake. Money, ID cards or similar items will not pass
either an examination by an expert used to finding*fakes or any sort of instrument designed to indicate
authenticity. Also, this clause cannot be used on any*object that was created using a Contract; this clause
can only be used on real objects. Exceptional Success: The object remains in its*new form until the sun next rises.
Suggested Modifiers
Modifier
Situation
–1
The changeling does not have a chance to spend*at least a minute examining the object before*using this Contract upon it.
+1
The changes are especially minor, such as*changing the name and address on an ID card.
Discreet Conjuration (•••)
The character can remove a small object from a*pocket, desk drawer or other location where the object*could be — even though, before this Contract’s use,*the object wasn’t there at all.
Cost: 2 Glamour + 1 Willpower Dice Pool: Manipulation + Wyrd Action: Instant Catch: The changeling is paying an enemy for*some information or service with a valuable object of*some sort.
Roll Results Dramatic Failure: The character pulls out an item*that is useless and exceedingly awkward, such as drawing
a fake but exceedingly realistic pistol in an airport*or a piece of broken drug paraphernalia when talking*to a police officer. Failure: The Contract fails, and the character finds*nothing new in the pocket, drawer or other location. Success: The character reaches into some relatively*small location she cannot see into, such as a*pocket, handbag or desk drawer, and pulls out an item*that fits comfortably in one hand and that has a maximum
Size of 1. This item can be anything the character*has handled before, and cannot be larger than*a cell phone, a pistol or some similarly sized object.
The item is fully functional — a pistol shoots bullets,*a cell phone can make and receive calls and a digital*camera can take pictures. The item is ready to use,*full of ammunition, film or battery charge, though it’s*the simplest version available. A pistol might have a
full complement of bullets, but it wouldn’t be conjured*with Teflon or hollow point rounds, much less silver or
other unusual forms of ammunition.
However, although the item can look very much*as if it were made of precious materials such as gold
or diamonds, in reality the item is made from clever*fakes, a fact that becomes obvious after close observation.
The item is also a relatively generic item of its*kind and lacks small details such as serial numbers.
The character can pull out a passport or credit card,*but cannot determine whose face and name are on it.
He could conjure a vial of acid, but would have no*control over its strength. Certain properties are unavailable;
this power cannot create radioactive materials*or holy water, for instance. Also, whether the*character pulls out cash, a credit card or an object that
can be sold, the maximum value that can be obtained*by using this clause is $100. Finally, this clause cannot
produce objects made of iron.
The object vanishes after one scene or as soon as*it is either out of the character’s hands or the character
ceases paying attention to it, whichever comes first. Exceptional Success: The character can determine*the exact features of the object, such as the name*and picture on the passport, the particular model of*cell phone or pistol or what sort of ammunition the*pistol carries. However, the object still lacks small details*such as serial numbers and is no more valuable.

Contracts of Den
Spoiler
Trespasser’s Spoor (•)
The simplest clause of the Contracts of the Den is a
blessing of warning. The Beast who learns this clause is
much harder to surprise in his own territory. His knowledge
of the local terrain sharpens intensely, allowing him
to sense threats almost before they’re visible.
Cost: 1 Glamour
Dice Pool: No dice roll is necessary. For the next 12
hours, the character gains a number of dice equal to Wyrd
+2 to all perception rolls made while inside his territory. For
the purposes of this clause, “territory” is defined as something
that is recognized by the local neighbors as belonging
to the changeling, or that he is able to successfully enforce.
A rented apartment is territory, but the whole building is
not unless the Beast owns it or the residents look on the
building as “his” — for instance, if the Beast is the head
of a street gang that protects the building, and his word is
accepted as law therein. Similarly, a stretch of woods that
locals say is the haunt of the Red-Eyed Devil counts as the
changeling’s territory if the Beast is that same Red-Eyed
Devil. The clause’s effects fade if the character spends more
than five minutes at a time outside of his territory.
Action: Instant
Catch: The changeling writes his name on one of the
entrances to the territory in chalk mixed with blood.
Trapdoor Spider’s Trick (••)
A Beast may have need to hide the entrance to his den.
This trick allows the changeling to do so, and in some cases
elude pursuit as well. When activated, this clause covers
a door, window, opening or other access point within five
feet of the changeling with an illusion, making it appear as
though it is either impassable or isn’t there at all. A fire exit
seems to be a stretch of graffiti-marked brick wall, an attic
window appears to have been boarded up for years, a manhole
cover just looks like a blank patch of worn asphalt.
Cost: 1 Glamour
Dice Pool: Wits + Wyrd
Action: Instant
Catch: The changeling is holding a live spider in his
mouth at the time.
Roll Results
Dramatic Failure: The illusion begins to form, then
snaps apart with an audible bang like a gunshot.
Failure: The illusion fails to appear.
Success: The illusion is successful. The door or window
that the changeling passed through is disguised to appear
as a normal section of wall. This strengthening of the
Mask can’t be pierced by casual fae sight, though a person
running her hands along the wall can still feel the door as
it is. The illusion lasts for a scene.
Exceptional Success: The illusion lasts for a day and
a night.

Thank you, good to see some of the modifiers they expect. I still think discreet conjuration as phrased doesn't actually work with its own catch, but yay for errata.
Edit: Raz, the window didn't break and isn't going to break. You'll see in a minute after the IC post, but basically I did buy something for that fetch in place of the normalcy echo.

Having just read through it for formatting, I really do think it was written as "contract ends either as soon as either A) the scene ends or B) the item is unhanded or not focused on, as appropriate". Such feeble editing though; even rewriting it here took me a minute. I almost reproduced the effect out of happenstance.

Hope the key works, as apparently I can't use trivial reworking on a specifically contract-created item
Willpower expenditure was unlikely there, all-out attack probably should have happened. Oh well, I'll actually learn the rules at some point maybe.
That's pretty much it for melee combat. It's not a complex system.

Also, can you explain to me whether Stephanie actually took an action? I'm a bit confused by your post.
She is taking no action, has zero defense, and is genuinely standing there with a derpy expectation that things will all work out for the best if people just stop fighting.

So Anarion, this is not just a small place above a bakery, this is an actual apartment building with multiple tenants, one of whom was apparently leaning out her window shouting down at us? Hope Marchande has a good enough nose to pick up a coatrack.
Urghhh, I knew that Temperance virtue would come back to bite me.
This has been the most reasonable coat rack to changeling conversation possible.

Should I break out the Benny Hill music? Anyway, the building is 4 stories. The bakery is the first floor, and I think I said that Stephanie's apartment was on level 3. Although I wasn't keeping close track of that, so tell me if that's an issue for some reason.

The important one is "what will Helen think when her sister(s) become a shadow and a coat rack, Tim Burton's maid brings in an archangel, and the door is surreptitiously closed by a werewolf in a business suit?"
Oi vey.
Hope you phrased that like a question, Thanqol. Else they'll both just blink at you. Or whatever the cost rack analogue of blinking is.
I was expecting a series of insults or a punch in the face or some other attack on Stephanie's weak points which would make her crumble and flee.
Instead, she managed to duck every question, avoid making any scary commitments, and came to recognise the Fetch as a sentient entity which A) Had rights and B) Would be a totally rad solution to all her problems.
She's become devastatingly good at finding "Everybody Wins!" answers to problems.

Excellent point! *Edit'd*

Pffffffft.
I speak from experience that no amount of good sense or mutual gain can undo that kind of resentment. In the positive light, Stephanie's two halves are working out an agreement for everyone's benefit.
In the negative, you sold your sister into a loveless tangle of work and drudgery to gallivant Across Arcadia and when the poor broomstick that was told to be a good big sister lacks that same gallivanting quality, you think you can show up and just slide right back in, ignoring years of emotional pain on both their parts because you're home now so it's okay?
...
Then again, the fetch is also Stephanie. Odds are in your favor.

I'm sure everything will be fine if everyone is reasonable about this

I need a really derpy smile emote because I'd use it whenever Stephanie says or does anything.

Just so you know, the scene I just did was somewhat planned and was not a response to anything in this thread. In fact, aside from you guys jumping off the opera house and quashing any hope of things going according to plan within 5 minutes of starting the game, pretty much everything has gone how I expected.

Only one complete derailment of the plan out of three possible scenes? Well played, sir. That's way better than my ratio.

I know! I keep thinking I can't stay this lucky. Though for what it's worth, what I did to prep for this campaign was plot out ~8 different stories plus what I thought each fetch was doing (although SiuiS's is somewhat...incomplete). Then I fleshed out a couple that I thought would make for good starting events and threw you into it, but I had and continue to have others waiting. So um, you'll have to work extra hard to actually derail everything.
This is not a challenge, it doesn't look like a challenge, doesn't resemble a challenge, for the love of all that's holy I'm not challenging you to derail the campaign.
