They can't really find out if their clan has a cheif or not without letting them go right? soooo yeah.
No, the ritual will automatically fail if the clan already has a chief. What TheSummoner means is that if the ritual does fail (and thus, the goblin there is not the new chief), those goblins are not going to be especially useful, so considering that they're already close to a cliff... I suspect Duv will keep the actual chiefs for a while, at least. You're right, killing them immediately doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

ohhh ok. i was under the impression the goblins would be sent back to their clans to try and claim title of cheif, and if there was already a cheif, then they just wouldn't get it.
Might still keep the non-cheifs around as ambassators though.
She's not good enough for him. A painful pun to write, but it had to be done.

Geez, Duv is really broken up over her son's death, isn't she?

This avatar of Anders from Dragon Age 2 was provided by Dorian Soth. I didn't do it.
So where is this on the time line? And is Chief dead?(Its been so long since the main story line, and I don't want to dig around for it.)

Wasn't there a theory awhile back that young and beautiful had actually swapped their names to make sure the son of wearbear was the cheif?
No, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a theory, but something explicitly stated in the comic. And it was one of the other goblins, not Dies that got switched.

It doesn't say who the other goblin was. What if it was Dies?
That'd certainly spell civil war. Who would accept that this shaky, cowardly goblin would 'lead the clan to glory'?
Ho ho. I smell plot twist.
I think it could be solved by a thing called "Stepping down".

Well, yes, but the teller forsaw a civil war had she chose the goblin right for the job. If Dies would have just stepped down*, obviously she would have forsaw "Oh, he'd just step down right away."
Besides which -- just because he steps down doesn't necessarily prevent any sort of war. In this hypothetical, he's already been chosen by the teller. There's still going to be half a clan who supports the 'Dies should be chief' option. If Dies steps down, they're just going to say "What!? Don't step down! Our teller named you as chief! Gah! Look what you Werebear-supporters did now! You're ruining everything rabble rabble rabble!"
And then the weapons come out...
*In this crazy hypothetical world I accidentally came up with where it was Dies and not Thaco predicted to be a great chief, of course.
i'm trying to think up a defense for it, such as young creating the nameplate of "becomes cheif" for dies, then swapping it with cheif's when she realizes the civil war bit. But with Cheif becoming cheif instead of thaco, who was supposed to be, she pretty much changed the future and bluh bluh bluh weird time stuff.
Duv: "Let's enslave, push around, bully and force them into going into a very dangerous dungeon crawl. After that, I'll pervert one of their traditions and crown their chief myself instead of allowing their clan to do so. On that, I'll then choose one of them as my number two. It can't possibly go wrong!"

Oh hey, you know, This mystery person at the end with the green IME? Given this whole thing with Dies and Duv, and how the timing matches up, I think that's Dies Horribly porting in.
Unlikely, Dies does not call Complains of names "Names", Minmax is the only person we've seen who does that. The green IME is most likely the jade teapot being used.
