So, I'm guessing that Lyta is currently a newt sitting on the table of a student dorm while a rather worried, young wizard is repeatedly saying "Don't worry, I'll fix it this time. We don't need to get any teachers involved in this."
Too bad for Lyta, I hope we don't enter the underground areas without her.
Anyway, rolling spellcraft checks for items with monocles(packet with marbles not included for not having a magical aura, but a +1 might still be in order for betraying that same argument):
Tube:(1d20+5)[18]
Sword:(1d20+5)[20]
Belt&Vials:(1d20+5)[18]
Backpack:(1d20+5)[7]
Wand:(1d20+5)[6]
Edit:wow, twice in a row high rolls where Gurlin examines the most, and low rolls where for what he's unsure.
Anyway, any passing grades? Or is Gurlin's knowledge of theoretical magic gone rusty beyond restoration spells?

Oh, just that when you write with a pen dipped in liquid ink, it's a whole lot messier than our automatic pens. People had to blot their work to soak up the extra ink or it would run and smear the words. Here's an example of a blotter:
This has cloth on the bottom, and you carefully roll it across what you've written, and the cloth soaks up the ink that didn't immediately seep into the paper.
"If you must punch someone then as leader I shall volunteer to take the hit!"
Great heavens of Pelor! Classic altruism, yay!
Freebiewitz: I was wondering how Chappe would try to stop this, if he'd still try to prevent it, I'm not sure how or why would Gurlin compromise his disciplinary ways, but before I really say anything I want to see how Niko copes with the outcomes of his gamble.

OK, let's see if it works if I don't preview the post.
Okay, so rolls for Aid Another Knowledge Arcana on:

I think that maybe the whole "try again but work together and get each of them identified correctly thing" thing has lost any potential impact. It was the twist that I was hoping to bring in from the beginning. Maybe see everyone work together and successfully identify all six items, and then, when whatever Niko got wouldn't matter, I would take advantage of the diegesis thing to have Niko reveal that he got all of them right, implying that teamwork is the way to go about things. However, it seems that this has become a chance for Niko to be reminded of the reason why he didn't volunteer for the leadership position.
It was some great party interaction to bridge a dry weekend though. I'd give xp for it if I were DM.
First, I'll reward it by providing extra incentive to work together. Antivenom, anyone? This is easiest if one of you just gathers evaeryone's already rolled checks, uses one persons' rolls for the base rolls and everyone else's for Aid Another (that's DC 15 and a +2 per person aiding if succesful). List the final results and I'll tell you if you got them all.
On XP: I like to give out XP after the adventure. Several of you have already earned some roleplaying XP, you can be sure of that! These kinds of situations are a goldmine for fleshing out characters and binding the group dynamic.

Spoiler
1st commemorative BEAST award, for displaying BEASTLY qualities in overcoming tricksy obstacles.
And Niko got...
Wand [26]
Sword [11] (rolled a 2 here)
Vials [11] (2 here too)
Marbles [23]
Backpack [15]
Tube [10] (this was where I rolled a 1)
And that's before bonuses for using the monocles or good roleplaying. They are good enough for...
Chaff to give the aid another bonus on everything but the wand,
Gurlin to give the bonus on the wand, sword, and marbles,
Stinky to give it on everything but the sword and the tube,
Judit to give it on everything but the vials,
and Niko to give it on everything (can't fail an aid another check for knowledge arcana unless those ones fail me automatically).
If we use Niko's for the base, then the rolls become...
Wand [32]
Sword [17]
Vials [15]
Marbles [29]
Backpack [21]
Tube [14]
If everyone was to get a +2 bonus from using the monocles, the rolls would be...
Wand [34]
Sword [21]
Vials [19]
Marbles [31]
Backpack [23]
Tube [18]
If we use Judit for the base instead, the results are...
Wand [23]
Sword [27]
Vials [15]
Marbles [22]
Backpack [26]
Tube [26]
If we give everyone a +2 bonus for using the monocles, then the rolls become...
Wand [25]
Sword [31]
Vials [17]
Marbles [24]
Backpack [28]
Tube [30]
Either you made a mistake with the second link, or you have been using two accounts.
Also, I'm pretty sure that you made aid another rolls for Gurlin's spellcraft check with the monocle (to identify the school of magic the items' magic belonged to) instead of knowledge (arcane) rolls to identify the items.
And you're right, mine was spellcraft, so if we take one off of each of my base (+6 for K:Arcane instead of +7)
It still looks like mine are the best average. I don't get the peaks, but my lowest is still 17, with a higher average than Chaff and Ceraphina's base, which also have a low of 17.
I can just re-roll if you want, but since Sampi already specifically mentioned using aid another and K:Arcane interchangeably here, it doesn't seem worth it.
Probably not. Augustus probably thought you were asking about the checks being made for that item identification minigame. I had chosen Knowledge (Arcana) when suggesting the little distraction to the DM because I saw it as a good skill to represent not only knowledge about magic items, but also possibly any standards the school might use for the items that the staff and students make use of (I thought it might fall under magic traditions). I just recently found out that there are rules for using spellcraft checks with DCs over 50 to identify properties of magic items.
I'm assuming that the monocles are activated by simply looking through them, which makes the Use Magic Device check unnecessary.
Just as long as the characters can be reasonably expected to stop what they're doing for one. However, I suppose that it might be possible to have some of them occur in flashbacks.
Perhaps some of the minigames could offer a one-time bonus to a relevant roll as a prize to encourage other players to participate. If the team competes to see who can bring back the most stuff for Chappe to cook with, then maybe the winner could get a one-time bonus to a survival skill check or some other relevant roll. Maybe the bonus could be given to another character who took part in the minigame. The in-character reason for the bonus would be the character thinking back to then and remembering something, whether it be something an opponent did or the correction of a mistake or something else.
