Silly Message Board GamesA forum for any kind of quote games, continuing story games, "What would you do if?" games, or whatever anyone comes up with. Old threads will now expire after one month.
Let me begin by welcoming you to the primary discussion thread of my thought child, The Gamer's Guild A place for serious players and GMs to discuss long term games and to weed out players and GMs who tend to flake or vanish entirely. If you have not applied please feel free to post one at
I find more and more often that campaigns die all to quickly here, which is a pity because I have stumbled across some of the most inventive and skillful roleplayers I have ever met. Likewise I get a little upset when a whole day's work spent on making the perfect character is wasted when the adventure stops two pages in. What I propose here is a gathering of dedicated players who's lives are not so strained as to stop them from gaming and who have a varied interest games.
This group would have no set number of people but I do think there should be some form of screening process to ensure everyone included is of a similar mindset. My thoughts for this are

What I'm proposing is not too radical but rather like a guild of like minded serious roleplayers who would rather not have their time and efforts wasted on short lived campaigns. A Gamer's Guild so to speak. I of course will also be submitting the above in hopes of building a wonderful basis of players and GMs. Please give any advise or insight into my idea as well.
You friendly neighborhood Doc
~Doc Pippin~
or to PM me directly. I will be keeping track of the guild members in the Primary roster given below and any member who is reported to have "Vanished" from a game or forced a game to end due to any wrong doing on their part will be noted as well.
If the Gamer's Guild becomes prosperous enough I may even create a separate website for us to use as a meeting place there by allowing more control on member regulation.
I would like the Guild to build a reputation for it's quality of members. A higher caliber of respect towards the persons kind enough to run the games as well as their fellow players. This also includes a responsibility to the game and ensuring that, if running the game you do not abandon the players without an explanation as to why it is ending prematurely or if part of the game you do not simply jump ship and abandon it without giving a reason as to why.
It is my hope that with such a prestigious group of individuals it will be far easier to build long lasting games, with respectful and highly skilled players and GMs. It will also serve as a hub for quick recruitment when looking for people known to be reliable.
This is again the first attempt and It may be moving to a new site if for whatever reason the fine people who run GiTP have any quarrels with the group, the Group grows to large, or the group begins experiencing issues with other players circumnavigating the requested application process. Currently the guild will run on an Honor system with myself and all other Guild members starting as equals. Your history in previous games will not be held against you nor will inexperience in any format, but by joining you will be giving your word to fellow Guild members that you whole heartily intend to work together and be as reliable as possible.
As it has also been asked a few times I would like note that while we do ask our members to be regular and reliable we do not expect them to move mountains or work their life around the computer. It is again simply a request for courteous honesty about how frequent you will be able to post as well as the respect to communicate with the GM and other players so as to build trust and keep the games alive and well.

As for my writing I defer to my DMed games as any long term game as a player, is so far impossible for me. ((For some this game may seem oddly familiar))

Adversities: {Gaming is not something that life should revolve around so a brief explanation of what could become problematic and cause difficulties for you, I.e difficult career, school, kids, medical issues, military duties, ect. vague is good we need not pry into your personal issues.}it all revolves around school and friends. but as i have free internet whereever i am it is cool. i also got a couple of mental disorders on record, but this will not cause much problems, i think (it depends though)
Reason for joining:{seems trivial but it does matter, knowing what your looking for can seriously help us work together}
i like mediveal, fantasy and usual+ realy ike games with strategy involved.
Anticipated frequency: {quite simply how often do you anticipate posting, perhaps once a day, every two days, multiple times a day or weekly whatever is realistic for you} at least 2 times a day (but will work with less frequency as well.
Familiarity: {What systems are you familiar with, what do you prefer or dislike. Ideas on homebrew. Likes and dislikes in gaming in terms of role playing combat vs social vs drama vs mystery ect ect what do you like and why. It's always great to know the players}
ok with homebrew. like strategy, social and mystery (not so big fan of havk and slash though.) am familiar with many different, ask me and i will most likely know it.
Expectations: {what do you expect of other players or gms or even of games. Or perhaps even of the group as a whole}
be nice ooc, wanting to have fun, not eing foul and rude ooc, exept from that i work with any kind of experience.
Sample work: {I think one character sheet (with background) from any system, one post from a social role play and any combat rp you have been in (or some you just feel like typing up), and anything else you believe will help us understand your writing style.} do not have much online, if you realy want i may find one.
Final thoughts: {Anything you think should have been asked and hasn't been or something you would just like to add.} only have a nice day
Username: Silverbit, also lurking in the Bay12 Games forums.
Call sign of choice: silver, Silverbit, anything really.
Native language: English.
Time zone: Erm. Not sure about this forum's measuring system. Whatever England is.
Adversities: Exams, but shouldn't impair posting much.
Reason for joining: I would just like to play an rpg, with people who play rpgs, in a reliable format.
Anticipated frequency: At least once a day. Almost certainly more.
Familiarity: Familiar: D&D 3.5, NWOD (the basics), D&D 5e playtest, Mazes and Minotaurs, Warrior, Rogue & Mage. Generally, I would prefer low-level 3.5 but I would be happy to play anything. I'm willing to learn new systems. Homebrew: Generally approve of well balanced homebrew that fits the system and setting, but I would rather not use any but the most in-depth (for example Gramarie) myself. Likes/dislikes: I'm willing to play anything, but I prefer a lean towards RPing rather than numbers.
Expectations: Players: Willingness to interact with the world the GM makes, general nice behavior , GMs: Fairness, creativity (especially in World-Building), and an ability to suprise. Group: Working well together, posting frequently, not arguing too much.
Sample work: This. (not exactly an RPG, but it's the only play I have done.) I haven't done much on this or indeed any other forum, but I do play off computer.
Final thoughts:
Sheet hosters do NOT like my computer, for inscrutable reasons of their own. Any character sheets would have to be just text. If the flavour warrants it, I will play a less-than optimal build. (For example: I would happily play a vanilla Samurai/Truenamer multiclass in 3.5 D&D, if the campaign took place in a setting that contained others.) I hope we find some more people . Good luck.
Username: Erik Vale, Everywhere.
Call sign of choice: Erik, or ETRPGL. Erik is shorter.
Native language: English
Time zone: +10
Adversities: School. Computer Problems (They don't like me for some reason). Blocked Websites...
Reason for joining:I dislike spending large amounts of time on characters only for a game to die out before or just about when it's Starting.
Anticipated frequency: Several Times a day.
Familiarity:
-Systems: Heroes, Dnd 3.5. I love homebrew for 3.5
Expectations: I expect for games to be seen through by someone competent, and who has either a overarching plan or lets us know none exists.
Sample work:
Example Character Sheet: Kalandor. Or background was divine children, with out presonality shown through play.
Example Combat Post [Halo Onyx Wind, Spelling Touch ups]
Adversities: School can be a pain but I do not get homework and I don't sleep much either so 4:30pm-2/3am is when I can post
Reason for joining: All browsing the internet and no social interaction drives jack a little crazy.
Anticipated frequency: A lot. Whenever I can. I do a lot of writing so my laptop is almost perpetually turned on.
Familiarity: 3.5e but I pick up systems quite quickly.
Expectations: Good roleplay and the ability to understand that things said in-character are meant to stay in-character.
Sample work: Currently part of two separate games, No experience DMing. I tend to write fairly detailed back-stories with a tinge of sardonic comedy. HERE is a character sheet that never got any use. Its not the finest example of what I can cook up but its something.
Final thoughts: Because why the hell not. I don't want my games to just run out of juice halfway through. Great idea I'm behind it all the way.
Adversities: I work in the mornings, but would be able to
Reason for joining: I, too have noticed that games do not live long on this website. I would like to find a consistent group, or at least see a game last longer than a week.
Anticipated frequency: Once a day, although my IRL game on Fridays prevents me from posting on that day.
Familiarity: I've been roleplaying for eight years. I'm familiar with 3.0, 3.5, Pathfinder, d20 Modern and Star Wars Saga Edition. Although, I could probably learn any system in a day or two. I prefer playing from these systems, though I understand if a system fits the genre or story well. I haven't played 4.0 because I haven't heard anything good and well... Pathfinder rules! My homebrew stuff is in my signature, but I have many ideas on the fly. In games, I like heavy combat and roleplaying. I generally don't play very dramatic games, but wouldn't be opposed to it. I am open to playing any inbetween, but I like sophisticated and generally adult and intelligent games. Comedy, likewise is welcome in any environment.
Expectations: I dislike power gamers, and people who try to control the game without being the DM. I won't leave a game because of such things, but my character could become a metalante (meta-gaming vigilante). I like it when the group works together, unless there is a legitimate reason for a character to dislike another.
Sample work: I have character sheets in my signature, and some homebrew. For some reason GiTP isn't letting me access my former posts right now.
Final thoughts: I hope I can add something to the guild.
Time zone: I live somewhere in Asia, so that's +9.
Adversities: Job (teaching) and competitive sports.
Reason for joining: Mental closure: I put effort into thinking up my PCs. It feels much more satisfying to leave them behind after finishing a proper campaign rather than to have them nowhere due to a game that doesn't progress beyond half a level/ a few weeks.
Anticipated frequency: At least once a day, if not more. I almost always have access to the internet due to my job and smartphone. Exceptions would be if I'm travelling or am away for competitions, in which case, I might only post about once a day, since my internet access would be limited. But of course, I'd be sure to let my group know in advance.
Familiarity: I've been playing for almost 3 years now. I've played D&D (2, 3.5, 4) before, but I prefer to stick to Pathfinder.
Expectations: I'm pretty easy-going with what happens in my games, so long as people work together. But I do get extremely frustrated when people use their PCs as a vehicle for their own mary/marty-sue fantasies (which leads to trollish behaviour and shoddy role-playing). And for the GM to know when to intervene to keep things interesting or moving along, as opposed to being a slave to the dice roll.
Sample work: Most of my gaming has been IRL, so I don't have much to show. But here are the two PCs that I'm using in Thattaman's games.
Final thoughts: I've done lots of RL games and a few play by email games before, but this forum is my first time doing a more structure play by post, so I hope to learn much from the rest of you.
Reason for Joining: Always on the look out for long lasting games, never seem to find them. I try to put effort into making interesting characters, and it can be sad to see a campaign full of interesting role playing die for no reason.
Frequency: At least once a day, most likely more often. I try to keep pace with the posting of others, but I may post more often to keep things moving.
Familiarity: I have been playing D&D 3.5 for almost 7 years, and am familiar with 4th edition, Pathfinder, and most White Wolf products (although I have never played these).
Expectations: I love good roleplaying as much as the next man, but I hate DM's that try to nerf everyone because "having a capable character means you just want to break the game". I like exploring characters interactions even if they are antagonistic, so long as everyone knows whats up going in.
Sample Work: My only long lasting PbP game: Rebirth of Magic. I would show character sheets, but my myth-weavers page deleted them all for some reason.
Final thoughts: I hope I can add something to the Guild, and I look forwards to our creations meeting.

Adversities: 24/7 on-call for rescue duties, can be avoided most times, apart from most serious issues.
Reason for joining:Games that are long term and fun.
Anticipated frequency: Couple of times a day, or more for more interesting games.
Familiarity: Most d20 systems, a large assortment of everything else. Plus I learn quickly and love new systems.
Expectations: I like DM's to follow the rules for better or worse. If I have a save or die spell and cast it on the BBEG, I like it to work. Likewise I expect him to do the same to me.
Sample work: I'll post something later....

Username: hoverFrog. Note the camel caps, they're important. Call sign of choice: hoverFrog or anything that isn't a direct insult. Native language: I am fluent in English, VB, VBA, JavaScript, LotusScript and Formula Language and I have a working knowledge of SmallTalk, Java and C++. I used to know gibberish but I grew out of it. Time zone: GMT+1 which is odd as I live on a direct line south of Greenwich. Yes, I'm English. That means I spell words differently to those raised on Webster's Dictionary. Adversities: Children, girlfriend, work and my commute. In no particular order. Often my time is dedicated to one or more of the above adversaries. We've fought for years and most often they defeat me with their cunning and power. Nevertheless I continue my battle. If any are likely to kill me then I think it'll be the commute first. Reason for joining: Who wouldn't want to join a guild of gamers. I'm particularly hoping that I'll get a crest to add to my signature. Anticipated frequency: I post almost every day but sometimes I have to take a break for life stuff. Familiarity: D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder. Mainly 3.5 in Eberron, Dragon Star or homebrew though I still have my 2e, Ravenloft, Planescape, AD&D and Greyhawk campaign settings. I tend to avoid homebrew having found that other people have done it first and probably better. I'm not averse to modifying a prestige class to fit my game though. I like a mix of styles rather than a preference for one. There's nothing wrong with hack and slash or role playing every copper piece being spent at the market but if that's all you do then it can get a bit dull. Expectations: Players need to participate and DMs need to keep the story going. If you have players who only get involved when it is time to roll dice then it makes the DM's job that much more difficult. If the DM railroads the players then they aren't PCs but puppets for him or her to toy with. The game is a collaboration and not a competition. Sample work: Just take a look at my extended signature below. There's stacks to look at. Final thoughts: Roll for initiative ... 5
Time zone: GMT -7, also known in the U.S. as Mountain Standard Time.
Adversities: family (wife and young children) and career (law). These rarely interfere with PbP but are death to IRL or skype/chat games.
Reason for joining: interested in long-term campaigns and world creation.
Anticipated frequency: usually daily; on rare occasions, an adversity may cause me to miss a day or two.
Familiarity: pretty familiar with texts for 3.5 and GURPS but need greater play experience.
Expectations: I expect to live to a ripe old age, teaching my grandchildren's children proper role-playing.
I do not have high or strict expectations for an all-volunteer collaboration of like-minded (or reasonably like-minded) individuals. As warned in the sticky post at the top of the forum, most PbP campaigns fail or never get off the ground, and I've been guilty of that myself, when I tried starting one and realized that I lacked the preparation. (Note to self: Practise playing first, before moving up to GMing.)
I've been grateful for the stories I've been able to take part in, even when they've been prematurely aborted. I appreciate the work that goes into it. That said, I'd happily seek to build something more persistent.
Sample work: My favorite, now-in-limbo commoner Cheshire (Thread)
The on-going GURPS campaign zombies-on-a-cruise-ship, with Doc. (My character is Tal.)
Final thoughts: I'm actually rather picky in the campaigns that interest me, prefering my campaigns on the edge of realism. E6 is a big turn-on.
Spoiler to avoid wall-o-text:
Spoiler
I have mixed feelings about house rules and homebrew. I think there's a lot of good stuff out there and a lot of RAW in need of fixing. There is also a lot of crap ('though one sentient's crap is another's fertilizer), a lot of different ways of fixing a problem, and even some disagreement as to what constitutes a problem.
I have thought of doing something related to Doc's thread: forming a subset of folks to work on a common core of house rules, homebrew, etc., for a persistent world. For example, I consider myself a fan of these 3.5 variants: vitality/wound points, bell curve (3d6), fractional BAB & saves, and E6.
I have ideas for house rules, etc., some of which are probably really bad ideas (tm), but I'd be interested in bouncing them around with people who have at least the same general interest (in terms of power level, game system, etc.).
Adversities: Smartphone only in free time (saving for a new laptop - hopefully by new year), busyness at work, significant other who works shifts, couple of evenings a week with friends.
Reason for joining: I'd like to be part of games that don't die through drop-outs.
Anticipated frequency: A post per game every 1-2 days minimum. Often more, but that's what I'll guarantee.
Familiarity: D&D3.5
Expectations: I'm pretty happy with any well-written campaign with consistent input (or at least notified absence), from all involved. I prefer campaigns where the DM does passive rolls such as initiative, reactive saves, perception etc on behalf of the players to avoid getting bogged down in game mechanics. I like the story to flow!
Also as I am not a totalitarian, I think we should have a popular choice vote on the governing body. I propose a republic style leadership of 'Senior Member's' who would act as a sort of quality assurance and keep or prestigious guild on track and honest.
Anyone would be able to become a Senior Member by popular vote and the total number of Senior members would be 1/10 of the number of total members. These members are not beyond reproach though and may be removed from position by a vote of members against. They have no real authority beyond that freely given by the members but would willingly accept the responsibly of ensuring the greatness of our fine guild. These Members would be given an elite status in the roster designating their position in the guild and would be able to recommend either positive or negative marks on other members but ultimately their largest responsibility would be to help and guide other members.
I also believe that we should have a Governing President. In most groups found in forums the person who created the original post is by default the person who controls that title, but if we are to ensure our group's longevity then it must be fair. Therefor this too will be open for a popular vote. The same rules will apply to this position. I would like to put myself into the running but I cannot and will not force any vote in my favor.
The Governing President's position will be the overall maintenance of the group. The governing and monitoring of the Senior Member's and to ensure fair and equal treatment with in the guild.
All of these responsibilities would of course be based entirely on the honor system as we have very little actual authority in the forums. The only punishments possible, in order of severity, would be
1: A warning or inquiry into or about an alleged incident or wrong doing.
2: Minor negative notes next to your name detailing any unexplained or obvious infractions of the member.
3: Removal of one's name from the roster entirely noting no more familiarity with the group due to repeated and numerous infractions. This punishment requires a vote of the senior members.
4: Black listed: This punishment will be reserved for those who so grievously offend the group that by popular vote are added to a special list at the bottom of the roster. This list will allow all Guild members to avoid letting such disruptive, disrespectful, and immature persons from ruining their game. I doubt this level will be required but one must always prepare.
Also as I have said we are all equals here so please voice your opinions about additional policies or rules that you believe may help our young Guild prosper.
As Always

Let's not just concentrate on the negatives either. I propose that we offer some kind of reward too. Given that we cannot actually do anything to anyone this might be as simple as awarding "dice" when someone says something positive about the player in their game. I've certainly had recourse to praise players for some excellent role play or for working to build a group so that it functions well as a whole and it would be nice to award these players with something that they can take with them to show off.
It might be nice to see a player with 5d20 in their signature denoting a long time and valued member of the Gamer's Guild too. Particularly if they can link to a central place that confirms their membership and rewards. I've seen several players who add praiseworthy comments to their signatures anyway.
I like that Idea using awarded dice to show achievements with in the guild. They would be tracked as Positive comments next to the players name. This would help potential GM's note that the applicant is a very reliable and skilled player. Or it could confirm the great level of care and knowledge of a given GM when they track his signature to the roster and see his many awarded dice!
Perhaps something like
Spoiler
Post Script:
In addition to the negative comments Guild members will be allowed to earn Dice as a Symbol of accomplishments with in the guild.
D4s: Will be awarded for every three months that the member has maintained good standing within the guild and has has no more than two negative marks during this time. A member will be able to buy-off a single negative mark buy requesting the loss of a single D4. At this time both a D4 and the negative mark will be ex-sponged from their name. You must request your D4 when you become eligible as it would be very difficult to manage the time lines for all players. You may send the request to any Senior member.
D6's: will be awarded by request from any GM that finds the behavior of a Guild member to be above and beyond that of his peers. These requests need not come from guild members. Outside GMs may PM a senior member with information regarding the accomplishment and a link to view as well. This will then be added to the players Dice. This will assist GMs in finding the best players as voted by other GMs.
D8s: will be awarded on a similar basis except it will be to note a GM of great caliber. This request will be made by the players of the game and will follow the same channels as the D6s. This will assist Players in finding the best GMs as voted by other Players.
D10s: will denote a Member maintaining the position of Senior Member or Governing President for two months.
D12s: These will be given to members who have repeatedly shown themselves to be an example of the courteous, helpful, polite, and responsible individuals who truly embody the Guild's intent. These Dice will be awarded only by popular vote of the Senior members.
D20s: These dice will be given to those members who have gone above and beyond to assist the Guild and ensure its prosperity. There is no exact criteria except that they are given by popular vote of all members. Anyone may request the vote but it should be noted that this is a great honor.
Your thoughts?

Interesting, but I wouldn't want to have to potentially list 1D20,1D12,2D10,2D8,4D6,8D8 to denote my standing (admitedly that's a very extreme example, but still).
I think simpler is better - it's maybe not needed to use every type of dice, and the smaller dice should accumulate into larger ones.
Eg:
4d4=1d6
6d6=1d10
10d10=1d20
And then you'd only have to note the highest-level dice. For example, I could say "I'm a 2d10 member of the gamer's guild", and it would still mean about the same thing.
I had a similar though on having too many die but I would really like to show the difference between deeds. The person who say sets up a new website to help the members or spends countless hours helping out less experienced members should be noted for their great contributions.
Perhaps a second means as well. Where you gain a Level for every two dice collected (Or 1 Level for every D12 or D20). This way you could say "I am a level 6 Guild member!" This way it shows your a member with 12 (or 13) Dice but if someone looked into your profile they could see that you are a devoted player, great DM, a long standing member, or a Greatly revered and appreciated leader of the guild.
I like the idea of levels more than dice (even though I suggested dice) and we all know how the xp system works. So I'd be a 1st level player and 1st level DM of the Gamer's Guild.
To make it simple how about this:
100xp per three months of good standing.
100xp for DM recommendation.
100xp for Player recommendation to a DM
1 level increase upon attaining the position of Senior Member or Governing President for two months.
1 level increase on vote by the Senior members.
1 level increase on popular vote of members.
To keep the levels easy let's just say 1000xp is required to go up a level.

Well i think that the most important thing is not to drop out of games- the xp system don degrade players that suddenly stop posting:-) great idea with grading system however:-)
The XP system sounds good, but for the mean time, perhaps we should focus on how to determine roles for now. A little structure would help this debate.
