Finding Players (Recruitment)Look for players for chatroom, play-by-post, or even real-life games here. Threads will expire after 3 months, so be sure to move important information to your OOC thread.
WotC just released the new Collector's Edition AD&D 1st Edition core rule books. Like the nerd I am, I went out and picked up all 3 books. My IRL group is considering playing the game but I'm not sure how long that will last. I really want to "kick it old school" and play this game. I was wondering if there are any Dungeon Masters and players who would be interested in running a game?

I am interested, and I may have a friend who has the ad&d books, but I have not played ad&d

OK I found all my AD&D 1st ed and 2nd ed books, plus my OD&D books. So yeah, I'd be in as a player, but it would take me a while to DM. Plus I'm already DMing a D&D Next game, a 4e game and looking to start up DMing a 4e Dark Sun game, so DMing is probably out of the question.
I was planning on DM'ing a "retro-clone" game on another thread. All but one of the players seems to have dropped off the face, so I'd give him preference to play his Magic-User if I do end up running it, and you all could replace the players that dropped.
I was thinking of running it with Basic Fantasy RPG, but maybe use Swords and Wizardry instead since it's closer to the "classic". Both are free and accessable online, which is a major advantage for all, and both are closer to the "basic" edition of d&d then they are to d&d proper. And honestly, its worth using them if only because you don't have to deal with descending armor class. We could house-rule in the "Advanced" classes if you guys really want to include them. Finally, I like to use a very abstracted house-ruled system instead of non-weapon proficiencies.
Also, how old school do you guys wanna play it? I'd love to keep things like "3d6, arrange as you like" for ability scores and "being a first level wizard is a really really tough job", but often people complain about that sort of stuff.
Although I'm not exactly in an ideal frame of mind for PbP (and as a result I'd much prefer IRC regardless of how... interesting scheduling timeslots for a Kiwi can get), AD&D was my first system, and more and more these days I find myself yearning for it. I'd be interested as a player for proper, full-on AD&D - one million tables and all. If no DM can be found then I suppose I could step up to that role, though I'd prefer not to. Still, I do have a variety of interesting modules.
If anyone else does want to DM but hasn't played AD&D before, a word of advice - start from the beginning. Moreso than any later edition, AD&D runs on the assumption that you're building the characters up from scratch, and you will find no WBL tables here to set higher-level characters on a more sensible footing. And don't be too intimidated by the rules, since most of them apply only in specialized situations - if needed, I could serve as a passable rules consultant as well as or instead of (please be as well as) playing.

I'm sorry to threadjack, but it doesn't look like this has coalesced around a game yet. I am recruiting players for a BECMI retro-clone (Dark Dungeons, to be precise) game I'd like to run here at the forums using pbp. The link to said recruitment thread is here. It will be set in the Grand Duchy of Karameikos and I will be using the modules B1-9 (as they are printed in the Compilation "In Search of Adventure") as a jumping off point.
Alright, it looks like I'm the only one insane enough to offer to run this circus, so let's get started. The sixteen, such as they are:
Spoiler
1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, first edition. No ifs, ands or buts.
2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
Standard dungeon crawling and monster slaying, with maybe some world-saving thrown in, in a homebrew campaign setting which I'll kind of be making up as I go.
3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
Anywhere up to six or seven players is plenty fine. If more players apply, I will consider taking a few alternates on board as well.
4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
Probably through the forums, though if it turns out that all the applicants can make a weekly IRC session that option will be considered.
5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
3000 xp. The intent here is to give single-classed characters a bit of a leg up on multiclassed characters, so they aren't overshadowed at first.
6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Roll your starting funds as normal and triple the result - you're not exactly seasoned adventurers, but you're not really green either.
7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
I only own the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manuals and Unearthed Arcana, so anything outside those sources is banned unless you convince me otherwise. Homebrew, likewise, is guilty until proven innocent.
8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
See 7., with the additional note that deep races (duergar, svirfneblin, drow) are likewise banned unless a player can convince me that it is crucial to their enjoyment.
9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
4d6b3, arrange as you please. Hit points are generated as normal with the provision that any below-average roll at first level is replaced by the average roll, rounding up.
10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
Alignment will be used, but in my mind it has always been a cosmological distinction which only happened to align with our morality sometimes. I therefore have no problem in principle with playing neutral or evil characters who are honestly working for the greater good, but depending on the other players I may override a given concept.
11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
Multiclassing will be by the book.
12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
Use the forum roller - I may roll certain secret rolls on my own personal dice.
13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
Nothing comes to mind that hasn't already been mentioned.
14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
A background is required, but it need not be long - give a brief sketch of what kind of place your character hails from and why they are a wandering adventurer. For preference, give some indication of their personality in the process. I'll take your homelands and integrate them into the setting where it seems appropriate.
15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
Hack and slash and roleplaying in roughly equal measure, with perhaps the odd mystery interlude and occasional puzzle. As the game goes on, and I get a better feel for you all as players, that may change.
16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
See 7.

EDIT: 1 Point off being able to be a Paladin or an Illusionist!!! I'll never get to play those classes! Drat! Looking at my stats, I can be a Ranger! I'll go for that!

I have a question: Is the Dungeon Magazine errata for Unearthed Arcana permitted? There were some added multi-class combinations for demi-humans, and what-have-yous. Just kurry-uss.
It won't aid in my concept, but I thought it'd aid the others in theirs, for whatever reason: http://www.acaeum.com/library/errata_ua.html .
As well, would you like for us to roll for social status and birth order?
EDIT: Another question!

The errata is a go until further notice, having glanced over it. As to rolling for birth and social status... mmmno. I believe in giving players as free a hand as possible in their backstory.

Sweetness. I really wish I could provide actual scans of the articles, but alas, I was born in 1989, and the only person I know who might have had copies is now in Manhattan or New Jersey, and I'm appreciative enough of his hard-copies.
And, hey, thank you for the freedom part. I wouldn't at all have minded that, but it's nice knowing we get freedom!

Sorry for not getting the full application up yet, but work has been insane. I'll be ready Monday at the latest.
If I do go Paladin (and I'd like to), how flexible are you on the only-adventure-with-good-characters rule? I hate to force everyone else's alignment on my account.

I'll probably be good or neutral, so I don't have a problem with paladins...I know this won't really affect what the GM has to say about things, I just thought I'd let you know that I, myself, am more than comfortable with travelling with a paladin.

As far as paladins go, I dislike the strict 'you can only associate with these people' restriction. However, a paladin may fall if their associates consistently perform non-good acts and they do not attempt to stop it or flat-out leave. Note that last clause. So long as you make reasonable attempts to keep your companions 'in line', so to speak, there won't be a problem.
And Zuh1, welcome aboard!

Thanks for the welcome! I've decided that druids seem a little dull to me right now. I'm guessing our Paladin will preclude having an Evil character in the group, so my plans for a gnome assassin may be inappropriate, but how about a thief?
I'm thinking of going with a regular Fighter, here, or a Cleric. Or some multi-class, probably including Cleric.
On that note, what pantheon will be used?

A thief is fine by me. As to pantheons... urk. Clean forgot about that.
Tell you what. Gods have the same rule applied as homelands. Come up with what you like and I'll weave it in as best I can, and change it if I can't. Sound fair?
