This is the thief who likes to hoard,
That loves the bard with the puppet Lord
That admires the fighter with the green-hilted sword,
That employs the Wizard, whose bird is ignored,
That has the gender unexplored
That intrigues the Halfling, usually bored,
That slew a mountain of the goblin horde,
That follows the cleric,
That serves the lich,
That seeks the gate,
That guards the snarl,
That lives in the prison the gods built.
Backgrounds? You don't need a background. For an avatar, you just don't have a background and it works fine.
That avatar has massive eyes, the body's way thin, the gun's way big, and the eyes are too low.

Just because it's a stylistic choice does not mean it's above reproach.
You can claim all you like that it only looks bad ON PURPOSE, but at the end of the day the fact is, it still looks bad.

I meant that in general, not specifically referring to yours.
Though really, there's nothing wrong with having your avatars turn out like crap when you start out. The key, of course, is going from having your avatars looking like crap... to having your avatars not looking like crap!
My first piece of advice: Listen to advice!
My second piece of advice: Learn the rules before you break them. Branching out and making 'stylistic choices' is all well and good (I would be a hypocrite to say otherwise), but it's better to start out with basics. Trazoi's guide, if you haven't already read it, is a decent starting point.

I cannot second this a third time for four times.
Yes, it's really the best way: Go with the rules, then start breaking them, little by little. I went with Lanky's Paint Avataring guide, following it. And then I started playing with things: Coloring, shading, sketchyness, scratchy outlines, "translucid" looks in Paint. It's all about learning and then de-learning.

So, messing about with a new avatar, but the left sleeve is really bugging me for some reason. I was wondering if any of you could see anything wrong with it? I can't really place much beyond a feel that it looks unbalanced, but that might be because I haven't finished the avatar yet. >.>

First thing: Length of arms. The arms in OotS, much like real life, reach all the way to the hips. The hands then reach just below the crotch area. This one, from what I can see, has such short arms that it barely reaches to the hip/crotch area.
Notice how the lines on the sleeve border align perfectly with the fingers, making them look like fringe rather than fingers. Make sure the fingers and border lines are off-set and, personally, I'd extend the arm so less of the hand is covered to make sure it looks like a hand. And as Crimmy said, I'd lengthen the arm and sleeve in general.

My friend asked me to draw his new psion, and his astral construct.
Here they are!
So, thoughts? Opinions? Ways for me to improve?

Hmm, the ears should come from the front of the head, like a regular elven ear, but on both sides.
The eyes, I think just look wonky. A little wide.
Otherwise, very good!

Larger eyes, with that line thickness.
Longer ears, not larger, just more elongated to the sides.
That left foot (which is to our right side) looks weird.
I haven't posted here in awhile, but lately I've been making OotS-style related art, so I wanted to show them here.
Here is the first one:
Second:
Third:
*snip*
(Edit: As my take on The Succubus' character Elanna, this may be toeing the line on inappropriate images, so I removed it. I could ask the Mods about it.
Fourth:
If they stretch anyone's screen then I will spoilerize them, but maybe not right away.
As you can see, my style diverges from The Giant's style a bit, particularly in the eye size, eyebrows, facial placement, expressions, and body shape.
Since I never use templates, the style of my avatars varies from piece to piece, it seems.
I have more in the works (more Touhou characters!), which I hope to complete in the following weeks. Next up is Shanghai and Hourai, but I will not be able to work on them until next week. Here is the rough version:

And I fifth this, although I have never used Inkscape, and therefore never had need of Trazoi's guide, although I remember reading it a long time ago.
@Cuthalion: If I may, I'm about to try to give some pointers on improving the wings. Think of wings like an extra pair of arms. Bat wings are a more visible example. In stick fiqures, they bend like normal stick limbs, and the "arm" and the "fingers" make up the frame of the wing which supports the skin covering. In bird wings, the flight feathers take the place of the fingers. Others than that, I would find references to help draw the wings.
@Kymme: I don't see anything wrong with the shape of the psion's left boot, but the legs in general could be *slightly* longer, and the foot slightly longer.
Also: Did you use MSPaint (and IrfanView or some other resizing program) to make the three other avatars (The knight, the TF2 Soldier, and Tiamat) you posted earlier? If so, then *right on* -- so few of us use MSPaint.
@Derjuin: I like that dragon, (is it a copper?) although if I drew a dragon the muzzle would be pointier like real life lizards.
@Abscondcrow: It looks like Ichigo is holding Zangetsu in the air behind his head. It should be lowered a bit so that it looks like it is resting on his (nonexistent) shoulder.
Either the legs are too short, or his belt is too low, resting on his upper legs.
His bestocking'd feet need a dark outline to stand out, and for your style the feet might look better if they are a bit longer.
Careful about widely varying line weights; the sleeves and hair have very thick outlines, while the sword has a thin outline.

Thanks! It sort of is - the request was pretty specific about shape and color. It's sort of in between bronze and copper. The muzzle was originally skinnier and pointy, but they asked me to change it to be flatter at the front and a bit thicker.
Man, your paintatars are as good as always. I especially like the last one, it's quite dynamic. I had a small request for you: Would you, by any chance, still have that one paintatar I requested aeons ago? One dude with white hair, golden armor and a molten lava sword?
k i'm new to this. i've only made 2 avatars so far and am looking for some advice. i see the things you guys post and its pretty sweet so im certain this is the right thread for the this post
these are my first two avatars and I've only been working with the program for a couple days. I'm using inkscape atm. thanks and any advice is good advice.
the mullet monk is for a friend of mine. i hope he digs it.
Made another. lol OoTS Cthulhu

SAY YOU ARE AWESOME... or, you know, just say... it was hard. Give us hope that we can be better!
Well, I can tell you that all of the OotSish art I posted recently are not based on my first attempt drawing the characters; it usually takes two or three tries before I get it right. And I can spend quite a while tweaking the colours and adding shading in the finishing stages. And it is rare when I'm about to upload the picture or have just uploaded it that I see nothing which needs to be fixed. >.<
@Mrgone: I would also lower the saturation value of the green colour on the Cthulhu. Unless you were going for a radioactive green colour.

was just farting around experimenting. if i swap the colors around i'll probabbly go with an aqua. and maybe soften it up a little. lol he is kinda bright this way. lol he looks like a happy Cthulhu. lol

I think I may have gone overboard with her details. Also, the original was 790x790 pixels, so I took the liberty of resizing her slightly in case she stretched anyone's screen.
I think she has probably been the toughest Touhou character I've stickified so far, but some other ones may be harder (Byakuren? Mokou? Utsuho?).
The boundary could use some work. Does anyone else see a fault with the length of Yukari`s left arm?
@Crimmy: I want you to know that I oftentimes am impressed by your MSPaint work too, particularly your bold use of the airbrush tool, which I pretty much never touch. (I am thinking of your Aquatic Week avatars, some of your most recent.) Maybe a tablet gives finer control, but I find the airbrush`s freehandedness inconsistent and difficult to master. I really hope I don`t sound patronising or something, I do think your Paint skills are great.
Lastly, I have a good reason to draw Reisen next! (In fact, I sketched her before Yukari, but I decided to do Yukari first.)
