Yellow has numerous connotations of wealth and such in some parts of the world. It's the colour of saffron, formerly worth it's weight in gold. It's the colour of gold, the sun, other expensive things...
And in some parts of the world, different dyes were available, so while the Western world had access to Tyrean Purple, cloth dyed with which was worth its weight in gold, other parts of the world often had to make do with different colours.
Also, a bright yellow stands out amongst other, more drab and cheaper colours.

Ze king in yellow is a collection of ten horror stories, the first four of which revolve around a play called the king in yellow, which has a tendency to drive people who have read it insane. H.P. Lovecraft adopted a few of the traits and objects from the book, and the king in yellow become yet another book in the Cthulhu myths.
