That is a good question. It seems that the creatures aren't particularly violent, however, the cracks definately can't be a good thing. I'm not sure what the Lady of Pain is up to, but I am curious to find out. Once we've figured that out, I might have a goal to accomplish. By himself, Daniel without his pack, is completely incapable of even reaching the cracks. He has no serious spellcasting capabilities. Right now all I can do is figure out how I can help. I'm hoping the Lady can help point me in the right direction.

For the record, Mindsight allows discerning both type and intelligence score as well. Assuming the Queen is in range, what can she discern about the creatures? Are they unintelligent, as one might now assume?

Ah, the Unmatched Dervish is a fun class. Can't wear any armour at all, but I think transforming into a whirling hurricane of flying golden death makes up for it.

Oh, because I forgot in the post, I get an additional +5 bonus on all those attacks because they were made while flying, due to the Death from Above feat. And if any of my targets took damage from the critical hits but were somehow not actually slain, they are now also blind and deaf. Assuming they even have those senses.

....I almost pissed myself reading Erika's move. That makes Daniel's attempts to protect her a minute ago hysterical, really. ANYWAYS, seeing as Sebastian's no doubt last in the initiative order and everything's out of range of him anyway, I don't feel I could type a coherent 'Action phase' move here. All he can do is wait with his back against the wall, invisible, for something to land between him and Daniel, THEN attack it. Unless, of course, he can get a 'boost' from the Worldwarper? : D

I can't help but smile trying to picture that.

Yeah, Erika is quite capable of defending herself. Not that she'll object to others being all gallant and interposing themselves between her and incoming pain, naturally

And Erika could well hoist several other members of the group into the air if necessary. The only problem is that this then leaves them standing on a rocky spire two hundred foot in the air with no way off save jumping...

I can't fly either. Well... I can "fly", but not really. I can simulate flight through a combination of physical prowess manipulating the effect of gravity on myself.

So. Daniel is holding an action to get a proper assessment of the enemy, Fang and Sebastian are drawing weapons and hiding, and Erika is basically leaping into the skies to be a great-sword-wielding dervish. That just leaves the Queen.

Oh, and I won't be making much use of cleave etc, because upon checking the rules, a cleave has to be declared before you attack and you only get to make a single attack with it. With Erika's speed and mobility, that is almost always going to be worse than just outright attacking whoever I want to hit.

You know, I rarely realize just what my characters can do until I put them in their first combat. The Queen is way more terrifying than I had thought up until this moment.

... And that is why wizards are quadratic. By himself, Daniel can't do anywhere near that much damage. Even with one of our other physical combatants, I have been completely overshadowed.

Looks like I'm going to need to make up for lack of brute strength with ingenuity and careful planning.

Well...I don't exactly have the standard 'epic-level-shopping-list' down due to the lack of epic experience I have. And all I did witht he gestalt was try to add more physical mobility, tracking, and better-killey-ness (tm).

No Sebastian cannot fly. On the other hand he should be almost undetectable, and he's designed to be fantastic at ripping through people. I didn't know we were supposed to be a flight-based party. My bad.

Eh, it's less being a flight based party and more the fact that being able to move freely in three dimensions is incredibly useful.

Flight (or something equivalent) is just one of those kinda things that everyone should have at this level. The mobility is just too useful, and there are too many monsters that will have it to ignore it. I very much recommend that anyone who doesn't have some kind of reliable flight power get one as soon as they can.

In the meantime, I suppose the Queen could summon flying mounts, but I'm not exactly sure they'd survive long, so it might not be very safe.

I am glad to note that Erika is easily outpacing the Queen in single target damage (I think she's actually dealing about twice as much), which in many cases will be the more important thing. After all, better to kill one boss than a horde of minions. What the Queen is doing is very suited to her though, a lot more grand and broad than a more focused attack.

54 columns. Note that she can't actually overlap them within the same blast though, so it's impossible for her to hit an enemy more than six times (hence what I was saying above). In most cases I think she'd actually hit a bigger area and more enemies by using Eldritch Cone instead (a 120ft cone is crazy huge), but Eldritch Wrath has a distinct advantage when enemies are scattered around vertically, and also can be fine targeted a lot more.

Yeah, Erika was mostly built with the emphasis on mobility and dealing large amounts of damage to discrete targets. She's also got a role in assisting the group in manipulating the battlefield, but that hasn't really come up yet.

There's a Protean Avatar feat I intend to pick up which allows me to use my evasive repositioning ability to move an ally along with me. So she can help protect allies by snatching them out of the line of fire.

I might have a solution to the problem of some of the group not being able to fly, though. Erika can polymorph any object as a special ability, two objects at a time. This also applies to living beings. So I might be able to give you fine folks some very fetching wings if necessary. This is not an ideal solution, though.

Thanks for the offer but Daniel will be fine without wings. I want to see what he's capable of with the current limitations applied to him. He may not be able to do a whole lot during this fight, but even if he doesn't, I'll find a way to make him useful during this time. I'm still fooling around with some ideas as to what he can do. I just want to know a little more about what we are up against first.

Okay, let's address some recent issues/questions:

Vael: The reason I decided to start everyone off with a combat, besides cementing that we're all in the same campaign world, is to flush out any unseen craziness in characters so that I'll know what to expect in the future. By all means, people, please go perfectly nuts.

Also, the creatures beyond (now in the area) are aberrations.

Heh. Yes, clearly the merchants are the most critical...

Anyway. Realms, can we get a rough count on just how many enemies there are around here? I know there were twelve cracks in the sky which creatures came through, but it's a little hard to decide on combat tactics without knowing how much of a chunk we're taking out of them with any particular attack.

In related news, since the Queen appears entirely capable of dealing with massed hordes... Where's the biggest aberration I can see?

Edit: Also, am I reading that right? Gidae is adding an additional twenty d6 worth of sonic damage to every last one of our attacks? Because's that's impressively obscene if so...

Vael: It hovers around 20 for the big ones and the rest (the hanging ones and other small ones) have no intellect at all. Even for those with intellect, however, you suspect that it is absolutely nothing like your own.

Maugan Ra: At the moment, hundreds of new ones are emerging from the cracks each round. Getting an accurate head count will thus be pretty difficult until the cracks are fixed.

Edit: And now you guys know what a round of combat looks like when everything is tabulated at the end of the day.
