Depends on the crate you're opening.
You open a crate #40, or #30. You're getting from 5-25 times the value of the keys worth.

Yes, but those are definitely the exception to the rule. If you get a key, with the possible exception of #30s or #40s, you'll almost assuredly be better off trading a key for the item you want rather than taking the gamble on the crate. The odds for opening crates are ridiculously low.

Statistically, you're best off opening batches of 30 crates at a time.
That's when the unusual drop rate to cost ratio is at it's best for the better crates.
Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
Those crates themselves have market value as well, though, and drop very rarely. A #40 crate is currently evaluated at 10 keys, and #30s at almost double that. The Strange items inside? Less so. Huntsman and Sapper are the only prizes from #40s that can be expected to break even, and the Gunslinger and Machina are more-or-less the same way for #30s.

Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
Tribes Ascend is a fun game. Fun, but difficult. But fun. But difficult.
I like the Heavy class, whatever it's called. Seems only slightly slower/heavier than the soldier, but has way more health. And it has two high-damage, long range weapons.
Have only been playing TDM. Any advice for CTF?
I know there used to be a Tribes thread in this subforum, but I don't see it anymore...

They will view it either as a really cool item, becuase for the sole reason you can't get it again, or they will see it as an investment because there will be someone else who is a collector that will want it for the sole reason of a more complete collection.
You can show off every hat and every vintage/strange weapon you get, but do you?
I have a Direct hit strange, that I have put maby 100 kills on that sits in my inventory, do I use it to "show off" nope I don't. It still has value though, I won't be selling it for a random weapon even though I won't use it any more.
maybe it's my thinking that's broken then. when i first re-joined TF2 i opened a crate and got a purple effect scout hat. to me it was useless. the 8 strange weapons I was offered for it though had use so I did the trade. it was probably a "bad trade" in relation to what it was "worth" but I got what i wanted for it.
I don't use my strange weapons to show off... I use them to count kills. my strange Brass beast has a few kills under it's belt... my only problem it it doesn't count robot deaths in MvM... there needs to be a strange part for that.

You can get #40's on Outpost for 8 keys all day long.
Though, good luck getting a Crate #30 for 20 keys anymore, I see most asking buds which is frankly silly for a crate with no contents equating to that value.
#30 had a MUCH better line up for what you could get out of it though, so I KIND of understand.

1.) I was using the spreadsheet. Don't have the time to analyze the Outpost myself.
2.) At 8 keys for the crate and the spreadsheet prices otherwise, the Huntsman and Sapper are still the only prizes that you can expect to make back your investment in keys for the #40 crate. The next highest is the ~4 key Widowmaker, with the Mantreads and Holiday Punch ranking at about 2 keys each.

The spreadsheet is an awful priceguide.
I'm an admin on a fairly large trading server, and have a respectable amount of wealth, myself and I didn't get it by following spreadsheet.
The spreadsheet is like observing the DOW and using it to price every other existing stock on the market.
Real prices come from observing the current market state, knowing past trends when events have happened or were about to happen, and extrapolating it from current sales rather than listed price.
This is a barter economy.
The value of crate #40's is also slated to go up the MOMENT crate #50 happens with the past trends in #30 being observed and recognized by the majority of the community.
Though, if I were to make a suggestion, invest in the holiday promos now before they go up. BMOC's are a solid earbud + right now, Holiday Headcases are only going to sky rocket, and Ebeneezers are your cheapest access to profit increase at the higher market accessability point allowing more of the product to be moved in a more resonable amount of time.

I know that, but like I said, I don't have the time to analyze the trends. The spreadsheet, flawed though it might be, at least offers a snapshot of a relatively recent average of traded prices.
Also, the analogy is flawed... it's more like looking at last week's averages for trades in the NYSE: the data are outdated, but more easily compiled and analyzed than asking what everyone is selling X stock today. Someone's already gathered and sifted through the data, so assuming the data gathered were accurate at the time of posting, they should be useful as initial conditions and value estimations. The DJIA only uses 30 companies, the spreadsheet has almost seven hundred discrete item entries, not including item variants.
Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
Your statement would be true, if Mr.Rager (The guy who owns spreadsheet), wasn't a marked scammer who has huge piles of evidence of him knowingly altering prices for him to make profit off of it.

I did not know that. Do you have a recommendation for a different price guide?

Yeah... that and the Headtaker are what I was thinking of. Headtaker's marked as Unusual, and Haunted uses just about the same text color as Unusual...

Any of those (meaning only one. If those are for free, I wouldn't want to take more)
Also, I still don't have much, but I am willing to enter this TF2 Trade. For now, I need to sort my backpack for you guys to see.
Your modesty is appreciated, but if you want them and can use them, feel free to take advantage. I just don't want people taking them and scrapping them to go turn a profit or anything.
Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
Oh don't worry. I still don't know how to scrap. Even if I did, I don't have those, so I wouldn't scrap them.
EDIT:
You guys know how awesome Neftren is? No?
Well, he's damn awesome. More than that, but stronger language here is unacceptable. So let's move on to spanish and say he's CHINGON!

Neftren is one of those few TF2 traders who actually knows how to play the game. Give me a Scout and a BFB, and I'll absolutely destroy everyone. Give me a Spy and the Spy-cicle or Saharan Spy, and the same will occur. I'm also a really, really good Soldier.
