They make money by selling cosmetic stuff and faster access to side grade weapons and equipment. It's the Tribes: Ascend F2P model with a few improvements. Clans are among those cosmetic things they charge for.
Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
So the Dark Souls game is out? What do people think of it?
With it's no keyboard and mouse controls, locked to 30 fps and 720p, and requiring 2 different drms to be running concurrently in order to run, one of which is Game for Windows Live. And it looks better on an eight year old computer.
In short, why would anyone buy it on PC for $40? Unless you have an eight year old computer, of course.

Apparently it's not distinguishable from the Xbox version. It is as good as the Xbox game. Which means it's not the worst port, I guess.
Just plug in your controller and sit 10 feet away from your monitor. And install Steam and GFWL on your box, if you haven't already.
And pay $40 instead of $12.99 for the game. And whatever you paid for your computer compared to a $120 Xbox 360. And pay an extra $45.00 for the Xbox only PC controller.
Hmm, maybe I should just buy an Xbox or PS3. Is Dark Souls good enough to buy an Xbox or PS3 just for that one game?
Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
I keep seeing people mention x-box controllers in steam threads. What's wrong with a cheaper brand ? Like Thrustmaster ? Mine works fine after ten years of use. And I doubt I paid more than 10-15 $ back in the day.

Amazon. I never had an interest in getting an Xbox controller, so I just went to Amazon to see what the price was.

Some games require an X-box brand controller and won't recognize any other. At least those games recognized the keyboard and mouse.

I have never heard of that before in my life, and I love hanging around in Microsoft bashing circles. I don't think that is correct. Got any info on the matter?

Uhm...using special PS3 controller drivers, I will say that a fair majority of the games I play (Awesomenauts, Dungeon Defenders, a few others) actually only work with a 360 controller and nothing else (save mouse/key).

He wasn't talking about that though, he was talking about Generic 360 controller vs Official Microsoft XBox Brand 360 controllers.

Was I?
I do know that I have one game on my Steam account that only recognizes Microsoft Brand X-box 360 controllers and nothing else (besides Keyboard and Mouse). Mini Ninjas(which by the way, other than this problem, was an amazing port).
Now there is a hack that involves rewriting your OS registry codes to make it think your joystick is an official X-box brand controller, but if downloading hacks and installing them as registries make you nervous . . . then use a Keyboard and Mouse. Or, on topic, in the case of Dark Souls, Buy the brand name controller, since you can't use the keyboard and mouse.
I have seen other games that say they require a X-box brand controller but don't. But after Mini Ninjas, I'm wary on what it says on the box. If someone says, Yes I own Dark Souls and it works for this controller that you own, then great.

Dark Souls is $50 on the consoles. Not only that, but an Xbox 360 runs you $300 for a decent model with a hard drive (any cheaper, and you get 4GB of flash memory). The PC controllers can be bought for $25-30, and third party wired controllers are even cheaper than that.

I guess that's what I get for getting my prices from amazon, where it shows X-box 360 for $120 and Dark Souls for $12.99.

Just as a note for everyone who trades / buys keys from the store from time to time to buy items they like.
I'm selling keys at a 1.30 USD, currency conversion fees are on you guys, a big apology to our friends in Austrailia and Europe, but Paypal is a nasty witch of a currency system, even though your currency is technically more. Save yourself a couple bucks every 2 or so keys, I get monies, you get your items.
Alternatively, everything in my backpack is for sale, minus the balloonicorn, the fast learner, the jefe, and my capacitors (because my name wouldn't be worth much without the largest collection of Capacitors in the game. =V).
Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
I'm surprised how quickly botkiller weapon prices hit the bottom. 5 refined isn't enough to cover the cost of 6 tickets needed to unlock it. wow. I was considering buying a wrench when the price stabilized, but now I wonder if I should wait a month and see if it drops further.

Eh, they're just flooding the market right now. Their price will probably even out because they are 100% gettable, but I never see golds falling below a bills.

It's 6 tickets, minus the projected value of what each mission will earn you (one random weapon each, a decent-ish chance at a hat, plus an additional weapon per Surplus Voucher, which in my experience averages at like .75-1.0 per game...

An XBox controller is a pretty useful thing to have, I find, and not just for badly-written PC ports. Driving games are so much easier when you have analogue control of both steering, throttle and brake, for example (and no, a joystick doesn't really work well for that because it doesn't feel as natural as using one trigger for brake and one for accelerate). I actually played GTA4 entirely with an XBox controller because the driving is so much better that way--yes, the shooty sections are maybe a little harder, but you do more driving than shooting in GTA anyway (at least the way *I* play it ).
Re: [Steam]-y Thread XXX: Throwing titles out the window!
Played Left 4 Dead 2 on my friend's Xbox. It was in split-screen co-op with him, and also the first time I've used a controller in maybe eight months. Lemme just say it was impossible for me to enjoy that way, and I sucked at using an analog stick.

I play Just Cause 2 with BOTH. I keep the controller on my leg and pick it up whenever I hop into a vehicle, and switch back when I leave the vehicle.
