Well, I actually did modifier Calder a bit to have Van have someone to command. I switched from the Sorcerer-King at-will to Eldritch Strike for that reason. As so far, the attack has been mostly fluffed as a pure melee attack. And it's not been all that successfully used. With the reduction in party size, the hybrid needs to be more flexible. Calder doesn't have much in the way of self healing, but his Con score is pretty solid.
I'm ready to have Eveve say the word to move on, but I figured I should wait to see Ixesti's reaction to Lazam's impertinence reasonable and innocent question.

Would Calder know enough about the spear to understand? He'd be worried about the implications about allowing one king to king another, because that would break the tiny peace that exists.
Damakos is a Tiefling so... Everyone gets to smell brimstone all day and deal with his deep, complicated - yet unstated - emotions that only come to the fore as he stares across a vast vista and contemplates his lot in life as well as wrestling with his tortured past.

Ahh, I see. Then it's the ideal sort of wood to use when you barbecue other sentient beings, is that right?
"Eladrin flank steak, seasoned with our own special dry rub and pan-seared to perfection over a Heartwood-fired grill. Comes with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and the vegetable of the day. Chef recommends: Try it with the '86 Chateau de Mekillotte!"

Yes, eladrin do tend to become old. They're hard to keep in pens or bring to the slaughterhouse, thanks to fey step. Dwarves are no good as a replacement either -- you can marinate them for days and they're still too tough (and don't get me started on their liver meat!). Tiefling is too spicy. For me, it's nothing but human -- preferably the younger ones, while they're still tender. I suppose a nice plump halfling might be more appropriate for certain special occasions, but it's so much more elegant to serve your guests Herb-Crusted Little Girl. They'll appreciate the difference, I assure you.

Seriously, though, somebody clue me in here -- what makes heartwood special? What's up? I've never read a Dark Sun book (either RPG or novel), so I'm completely missing the context.

Lazam or Calder could explain it IC, but basically the Heartwood Spear is what was used to weaken and kill Kalak, the Sorcerer-King of Tyr. Up until that point, it was believed that Sorcerer-Kings could not be killed. Kalak's death sent a ripple throughout the other City-States and some, especially Hamanu, are extremely fearful that similar events would happen in his own City-State.
edit: and Lazam would know especially because the Forest Ridge Halflings are the ones who grew the Heartwood Spear from one of the trees in their forest.
So there's this Dramatically Foreground apple in my pocket. You not being the sort of DM who mentions things just to use as red herrings, IME, I assume it has some sort of loot value. How might Eveve discover the nature of said value?

You really need to think non-optimizing and more about the character.....I'd want a fruit and I can heal
Yes, but you don't have a self-only heal that's already as good as the potion and getting better with every level-up. Eveve really doesn't have any use for the thing at this point. It's like, she looks at the fruit and thinks, "Yup, I can do that." Don't get me wrong, she'll pick it back up if everyone dies around her ...

Ain't no harm unless it's keeping someone from having fun. And considering how much I like tactics and optimization, it certainly isn't keeping me from having fun.

I just figured that, in Athas, fresh produce would be much more highly valued. (Like when Shepherd paid/bribed Kaylee with fresh strawberries.)
That is definitely part of it. These are quite prized items due to the fact that they are fresh fruit + have healing powers of dubious origin. These are borderline contraband, but the kind that every caravan would probably carry. If there was some sort of 'police' force (i.e. templars) here, they would confiscate to use on themselves.
edit: I am not telling anyone how to play their character, but I will say that in this world, anyone who encountered this fruit and didn't need it for themselves would either use it to barter with or would give it to someone extremely deserving for a "favor to be named later". Eveve doesn't have to act that way, of course, but she should be aware that NPCs would be willing to fight her for it.
Hey, the only reason Huren's not snatching them up (he IS a rogue, after all) is that he's supposed to be flying under the radar, and doesn't want to have to deal with the hassles of theft charges.
Same. I just think of the movie Open Water......I'd rather not be left by the Caravan for stealing to run into whatever "sharks" are out there. On that note though, Lazam wants to follow the box

'Kay ... so thing falls out of the wagon and gets ignored by the caravan's manager, nobody says anything about even noticing it IC, the caravan was about to start rolling again and it was just gonna lie there in the sand ... yah, that really looks like something that people would be willing to shiv me to get.
I'm going to let the IC action stand (assuming Damakos doesn't react like Eveve is trying to frame him by planting stolen goods, or something). Eveve doesn't need more money or favors than she's got, and she doesn't need the healing. Good enough.
EDIT: If other caravanners are still resting when Eveve's done tending to the injured, she'll take her short rest. If not, it sounds like we're getting underway too fast for her to gain the benefits.

Actually, if we continue on the caravan, I've thought of a way to let Eveve catch her breath. And if we don't -- like if we decide to go out into the wastes after Van and the elves -- then Eveve will ask for a few minutes of rest. Either way, I'm ready to enact the decision in IC terms.
