The initial reason I wanted an extra character for the combat wasn't really because I didn't want automatic advancement, but because of the second round
If you have 6 combats of 1v1 in the first round, that means the second round is either two 3 man free for alls or three 1v1 combats as well. Choosing to make the second round 1v1s means that the third round has to be a free for all to determine the champion, and that's not great.
one extra character, on the other hand, means that if one person (chosen at random) advances automatically in the first and second rounds, we can have 1v1 the entire way through with no issue, which is what I wanted.
It's your choice if you still want to take part, but that's as it stands.

I'm alive and fine and my house is completely undamaged, if without power/internets/heat (I'm posting from my mother's workplace, just to say this). I'll be back Monday-ish at soonest, but probably later than that. This hurricane aftermath junk is a real pain in the neck.

I'm also glad that hurricanes don't exist where I live. (I once had a dream where one struck, but then I thought how completely illogical that is. Blizzard? Yes. Drought? Yes. Tornado? Once in a while. Earthquake? Probably. Hurricane? Luckily no.)
