The Shield Faerie (RACE)
Sir Flit and his corgie wardog
In ages past, a race of fey creatures found that they were drawn to the first mortals of their young world, and because of their seemingly instinctive need for symbiosis with these new-found mortals, these faeries harmonized their very life energy with them to be amongst the people. They became to be known as shield faeries, and the oldest of elven cities has a strong tradition of shield faerie protectors who watch over the citizenry as both friend and protector, living in symbiosis.
: Shield faeries are small creatures, roughly the size of housecat on its hind legs, with a thin and lithe humanoid form. Their features are elfin and fair, with long pointed ears and long eyebrows that look almost like antennae. Their eyes are always a solid color, and can be any color of the rainbow (or black or white), with skin and hair tones ranging amid fair and blond to almost albino to green haired and bark-colored. Upon their back are two sets of gossamer wings which flutter with a buzzing sound when they fly, but otherwise are folded back against their bodies when not in use.
: The mind of a shield faerie varies depending on where they are from; they perfectly adapt into any society they belong to and consider themselves full members of it. When not bonded to a mortal (see shield guardian below), they often look after children and teenagers, playing with the former and helping guide the latter into adulthood. They have a strong sense of community and work towards the promotion of strong values and protection of the group.
: Usually lawful good or neutral good, but shield faeries can be of any alignment (the rare shield faerie that is evil is considered an abomination by the race).
: Shield faeries are naturally drawn to the paladin class, as their defensive natures and the protective calling of the paladin class are a natural match. They also make excellent rogues, rangers and fighters. Some feel the call of magic, and become druids or clerics. Sorcery is a common gift amongst their people, and wizards are all but unheard of.
: Small (+1 AC, +1 to attack rolls, +4 to Stealth checks, -4 CMB, ¾ carrying capacity)
: 20ft, Fly 40ft (good)
: -4 Str, +4 Dex, +2 Charisma
: Shield faeries possess the following special abilities:
: The shield faerie may cast either shield
(self or on a willing creature) or shield other
1/day per 4 HD the character possesses as a spell-like ability with a caster level equal to half his character level.
: Shield faeries see twice as far as humans do in dim light.
: Due to their small stature and slight build, shield faeries may seem to be at a disadvantage but instead they often are capable of using it to their advantage. Whenever a shield faerie is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as Stealth), the shield faerie is treated as one size smaller if doing so is advantageous to the character. A shield faerie is also considered to be one size smaller when “squeezing” through a restrictive space. A shield faerie can use weapons designed for a creature one size smaller without penalty. However, the space and reach of a shield faerie remain those of a creature of their actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

Racial Prestige Class: Shield Faerie Guardian
Some shield faeries find themselves inexplicably drawn to a mortal being, as if their destinies are interwoven with each other. This draw causes the faerie to bond inexorably to the mortal, and his fate will be the fate of his bond partner. The faerie’s protective natures as well as defensive powers are amplified ten-fold through this bond, and many faeries consider it a great honor to serve a mortal in this fashion.
Most shield guardians hail from the paladin or fighter class, with a few being clerics or rangers. All have a partner that they’re bonded to protect, their life’s destiny is interwoven with that mortal’s own destiny, living and dying together as one.
: Shield faerie only
: Any good
Base Attack Bonus
: Combat Reflexes, Bodyguard (APG), Saving Shield (APG)
: The character must have a willing ally who is not currently being protected by another shield faerie guardian, and then the faerie undergoes the shield bond with that ally.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency
: Shield guardians gain no new weapon proficiencies, and are proficient with all armor and shields (including tower shields).
: At 2nd and 4th level, the shield guardian gains class features and abilities from a class he currently possesses levels in as if he had gained a level in that class (this includes bonus feats, spellcasting advancement, or any other level-dependant benefit the character would receive from being a member of this class). If he has more than one class previous to entry as a shield guardian, then he must select one class to advance through this ability.
: When a shield faerie bonds to a willing mortal, the mortal becomes known as his bond-ward. While the shield bond empowers his own native racial abilities, the shield guardian also instinctively knows exactly which direction his bond-ward lies in should they ever become separated (provided they are on the same plane of existence), as well as constantly having his bond-ward under the effects of a status
spell. Additionally, the bond-ward gains the benefits of the shield other
spell at all times (including the sacred bonus to Armor Class that comes with higher levels of this prestige class), with the shield guardian being the recipient of half of any damage the bond-ward receives should they be within close range of each other (25ft plus 5ft per 2 character levels the shield guardian possesses). This bond cannot be disrupted by means such as dispel magic
or greater dispel magic
but while in an antimagic field
the bond is temporarily suspended (and all supernatural abilities are suspended as well) but is immediately restored when either the shield guardian or the bond-ward leave the antimagic field
. If either the shield guardian or the bond-ward is subjected a Mage’s disjunction
spell or effect, the bond is temporarily suspended for 1d4 minutes.
If the bond-ward should die, the shield guardian’s own life force suffers dramatically as his life is tied to the bond-ward’s own; the shield guardian must make a Fortitude save (DC 25) or die immediately if his bond-ward dies. If successful, the shield guardian suffers a -2 penalty on all rolls for one week per hit die of the fallen bond-ward or until such time as the bond-ward is raised from the dead or the shield guardian atones (as the spell) for his failure to preserve his ward’s life. If the shield guardian should die, the bond-ward is unaffected beyond the loss of the shield other effect. If the mortal bond-ward should die of natural causes, the shield guardian often dies with his ward, but in some cases the ward releases the guardian of his duties out of love to let them live on and protect another.
Defensive Aura (Su)
: While within close range of his bond-ward, the shield guardian generates a powerful defensive aura to protect him in combat. While within close range of his bond-ward (25ft plus 5ft per 2 character levels), the shield guardian gains a sacred bonus to his Armor Class and to Will saving throws equal to his Constitution modifier.
: The shield guardian’s constant shield other
effect on his bond-ward is a dangerous liability, and because of that, his life-energies themselves rise up to protect themselves. The character gains the listed damage reduction which only applies to damage he receives from his bond-ward (example; a 5th level shield guardian who’s bond-ward is struck by an attack that inflicts 40 points of damage; the bond-ward takes 20 points of damage due to the shield other effect and the shield guardian suffers 5 points of damage, due to his damage reduction of 15).
: The shield guardian is a master of his racial ability to shield himself and others from harm. Use of his shield
spell-like ability gains an additional +1 shield bonus to the spell-like ability’s bonus, and this improves again at 4th level. When using shield other
, the target gains a +1 sacred bonus on AC (which improves to +2 at 4th level). At 3rd level, the character may use his shield
or shield other
spell-like ability as an immediate action.
: When using his shield
or shield other
spell-like ability, the character uses his full character level to determine its duration and effects in regards to his caster level with these spell-like abilities.
Guardian’s Grace (Su)
: When within 30ft of his bond-ward, the shield guardian may take certain penalties as his own in their place. As an immediate action, the shield guardian may take any one attack that inflicts hit point damage, negative levels, ability damage or drain, or status condition (such as being dazed, stunned, nauseated, etc but excluding death effects) upon himself in the place of his bond-ward, immediately suffering the effects of this damage or penalties. The bond-ward is then completely cured of this damage or penalty and may act accordingly.
: At 5th level, the shield guardian’s willingness to defend his ward extends beyond even his own survival. As an immediate action on a turn when his bond-ward would be dropped to 0 or few hit points or would be slain by some other means (such as a death effect, level or ability loss, etc), the shield guardian may instead sacrifice his own life in their stead. The bond-ward must be within close range to the shield guardian (25ft plus 5ft per 2 character levels that the shield guardian possesses) for this ability to take effect. The shield guardian immediately dies upon using this action, and the bond-ward is released from the shield bond. The bond-ward also receives a flood of life energy into his form, as if he had been targeted by a heal
spell cast by a character with a caster level equal to the shield guardian’s level. If the shield guardian is raised from the dead (such as by a raise dead
spell or more powerful ability), the shield bond is immediately restored unless the bond-ward refuses it (if this happens, the shield guardian loses his class features for this class until such a time as he bonds to another willing subject, which then immediately restores them).
: The character may use shield
or shield other
as at will spell-like abilities.
