YAY! HAPPY DANCE TIME!!! My dorm just got power back after a 4 hour blackout because squirrels chewed up a power line. Actually it was 3 hour but they turned my dorm's electricity off again because our boiler broke and having electricity on made it worse. But it's all fixed now and I have power, ALL THE POWER!

Wait, squirrels did what?
I've got one of those too. Guess who the pipes in burst and flooded the basement in the dorm next to mine and cut off the water for my dorm as well all day.
I like it. All my friends here are fellow nerds, in some form, and my professors are all really nice. The one actually complimented a paper I wrote, a first for me.
Thanks achinca, I am just glad you knew what the school was. Most people don't.
Different system. IF you pass your baccalaureat at the end of HS, you can sign into any public university in the city closest to your home town then at the end of the first year, there is an exam than cuts 85-90% of the first year students.
I know. My mom was a cleaning lady in an hotel and my dad was an electrician. When she became a widow at 42, she raises 3 kids cleaning up other people excrement.
Yes, without the proper social net that supported me, I would have become a delinquent.
Wow, Cornell? You guys are at some serious private schools. I spent two years at RIT before leaving private schools behind and finishing my education in the UW system.
Good for you Achinca, no need to talk about how absolutely asinine the US is. We get it.
Haha, thanks! Yeah, it wasn't easy, but I've had my eye on Cornell since I first heard that the vet school was the best in the nation. Of course, I'm undergraduate and not in the vet school, but it still shows.

To fill out the pattern, my undergrad was at Harvard, and I'm at Princeton (PhD program) now.

From your history and posts, you don't sound simple to me. Anyway, as you know, the difference between schools is negligible compared to the difference between how people take advantage of their education (or don't!)

Yes I agree 100% but dropping the H or the C bomb or whatever Ivy name does get reaction from people, especially from the opposite sex.

I'm not sure about that. I don't think other students there had particularly more luck in the dating world than students at other schools. (I wouldn't know- I dated the same woman all four years, whom I've since married). I guess it could be different for alumni than for current students.
Whatever "reaction" students/alumni can get with the name of a school (or a job, or a salary) is always temporary. You always have to back it up- with character, intelligence, personality...

Agreed but if one is looking for a short effect, it is a powerful thing. Dating/Mating requires depth of soul. Hooking up requires a sudden attraction for what ever reason, being it generated by alcohol or sudden admiration for earning potential.
And I've never had a boyfriend or even kissed anyone, so I don't think that qualifies much. Besides, when you're around other people from the same school it doesn't exactly mean anything special, since everyone goes there too.
Well, I have done BSc, MSc and am starting my PhD programme in the same university (University College Cork). I would have considered going elsewhere - to America, most likely - but the my supervisor is one of the few people doing work in this area and I got on really well with him this year.
Plus I have a girlfriend and a life here! And a fantastic karate sensei - I'm grading for my black belt in three weeks' time. We certainly are an odd group.
