To compete for the 'fifth wheel' position (if you believe in such things), I'm starting work on a Malconvoker. Disposable minions, fighting evil with evil, all those fun things.

Despair favours the status quo. It is a luxury we cannot afford. ~ Andrew Nikiforuk
"We all have oaths and duties to fulfill, from the lowest scullery maid to Lord Torm himself. It matters not if we care for them, for they are ours alone, close to us like a whispered word, always calling to us. My own duty hangs before my sight, a burden and pride non else can see. It is my death. It is never far but eludes me yet, though I seek it. I pray that I may fulfill my oath and I do not know if Torm blesses or torments me for it is ever out of reach."
Spoiler
Spoiler
Beliefs
- I must honor Torm to be with my parents in the afterlife.
- My allies depend on me; no sacrifice is too great.
- Oaths are more important than desires.
Traits
Sworn Homage
Jaes parents sacrificed their lives to Torm during the Time of Troubles so that he could defeat Bane. She was one of the thousands of orphans that the priests of Torm adopted and took to other temples. Jae was brought to Cormyr and raised in a temple east of Suzail, along the Dragonseye Way. The church of Torm is a somber place and Jae and the few other children that lived there grew up quickly, their childish games replaced by training regimen and drills for when they could enter the service of Cormyr. Jae excelled at soldering and left the temple by her sixteenth nameday and enlisted with the Purple Dragons.
Sworn to the Order
While she served the state in the Purple Dragons, she also served Torm. After proving her worth in battle and earning the Sword Ilbratha medal for valor she was inducted into a holy order of warriors within the church. Her duties with the order were minimal as all the members of the order also served in the Purple Dragons.
Fanatical Devotion
During the Goblin War Jae lost many friends and allies to the fell weapons of the orc invaders. Each engagement, each skirmish, the Purple Dragons bled and though they had superior tactics and weaponry, the horde made up in numbers what they lacked in skill. Jae fought in the majority of the campaigns and with each fallen comrade she clung tighter to the teachings of the priests, praying to Torm to see her safely through the battles. By the end of the war Jae was a changed person; the faith that had saved her during the war had clamped down on her so that she could not release it. Her life became a living duty to Torm, every day an oath sworn and fulfilled to follow his tenants in order to receive his blessing.
Flaws
Jaded
Jae has seen the true face of war and there is little that would still shock her. Though she is not cynical, it is hard for her to appreciate individual people for themselves as life has taught her that they may be dead tomorrow.
Palsy
While some scars are invisible, others are plain to see. Jae isn't sure when she developed the shakes but by the time the war ended they were her near companion. She's managed to control it some but whenever she's stressed or exhausted it takes over.
Resigned to Death
Torm spared the lifes of the children when he accepted their parents sacrifice and Jae had always wondered why she had been saved. In the body choked ditches and bloodsoaked grass fields she found an answer; she believes that Torm only granted her an extension on her life that day in Trantras. She is convinced that it is her duty to sacrifice her life to Torm, but that it must be done in battle. She's grown tired of waiting.
Hook: Jae has been on sabbatical for the past two months. Her superiors in the church are worried about her mental health and arranged matters with the Purple Dragons for her to take an extended furlough. She was against it, but of course has followed orders and decided to take a tour of the Dalelands as she's only known Cormyr. She could be on an extended stop in Daggerdale or only just recently arrived, though it's probably she heard of the Drow raids and decided to come up herself.

Re: City of The Spider Queen [DnD 3.5, Forgotten Realms, Recruiting]
Name: Etta de la Playa
Race: Halfling (Strongheart)
Alignment: Neutral (goodish)
Class: Cloistered Cleric/Malconvoker
Deity: Istishia
Home: a significantly re-invented Pirate Isles
Appearance:
Spoiler
Etta is used to being overlooked, in every sense of the word, and that's just fine with her. The halfling woman's only distinctive feature is her wavy dark hair, worn pulled back into a bun while travelling but falling loosely to her shoulder blades when released.
Etta wears blue-tinted steel spectacles that help cut the glare on the open water, but otherwise seem more an affectation than anything. She favours loose skirts and form-fitting jackets, with a masculine belt and boots. to go with them. She carries, but does not always wear, the traditional oilskin cloak of the sailor.
Background:
Spoiler
The sea is dark today, which seems appropriate.
It was only five years ago, five years ago today, that Etta first saw the Deepmaster draw demons up from the waters. Demons that he fooled into doing his bidding. Dripping and steaming, cursing and laughing, the horde of demons spilled up onto the beach and descended on the pack of attacking sahuagin like a - well, like a pack of demons unleashed from a watery abyss.
And when the fight was over, the Deepmaster was able to simply flick his hand, and all of the demons vanished. All except for Galabash, the one he referred to as his 'helper'. Which had hurt, at first, because Etta had thought that she was the Deepmaster's helper. Until she saw what Galabash could do.
"The sharkmen are all dead, Master. Permission to grind their bones and dance in their skins?"
"Yes, Galabash, yes. We will leave in half an hour. Within that time, amuse yourself."
The four-armed demon loped back down the beach to taste of the fish-men's blood and flesh. The Deepmaster turned to Etta.
"You see? Istishia reveals many mysteries. The ocean is big enough to contain contradictions, and to hold conflicting ideas at the same time. The sea is life, and the sea brings death. The sea is holy, and the sea contains devils. The secret lies in knowing the way to harness the wind in your sail, and to harness the demons in your sway. To do this, you must become as big as the sea. Big enough to be both darkness and light. To walk with the angels, and to dance with demons."
Etta wet her lips. She had come to this beach expecting to take part in the battle, to summon her own creatures to help in turning aside the sahuagin. Somehow, she had seemed superfluous.
"I would like. Would like to know how to do those things, Deepmaster. My father has written to you about compensation for the training. I will...do whatever you say."
The tall human turned to look straight at her, his grey-bearded face hard but not cruel. Under the traditional sailor's cloak, he wore a lightweight shimmering garment that seemed to have no set shape. It was hard to look at.
"Yes, Etta. Yes, you certainly will."
--
Captain Faldano stepped into the office of the Viceroy. While, according to Charter on the Pirate Isles, captains had almost complete autonomy over their ships and how they ran, the Viceroys had almost complete control over the cargoes and passengers that moved on and off of them. Which meant that, while Viceroy Serragano would maintain the very polite illusion that he wasn't Faldano's boss, both men knew that Faldano would have a very bad year indeed if he pissed Serragano off.
Which he might just be about to do.
"How may I help you, Captain? All is well aboard the Winter Sun?
"Very well, Viceroy. Valkur blows our sails. Although with one concern. That's what I'm hear to trouble you with today."
"Receiving and providing guidance and information with an esteemed Captain such as yourself is never trouble, Sir. Please. Sit."
Faldano found a straight-backed chair and composed his thoughts. After twenty seven years on the seas, he'd gotten very good at reading the colour of the water, the movement of a cloud, and the trustworthiness of a deckhand. None of which did him a lick of good here.
"Viceroy, it's about our new Witch."
"Ah, yes. Etta de la Playa. Of the Zaragossa de la Playas, you know."
Faldano knew. Bringing on an uppity halfling had caused a bit of concern. One whose father was high in the Church was all the worse. Not that she'd lorded it over them. The threat of church sanction and retribution was always there, nonetheless.
"Etta, yes. Frankly, Viceroy, she makes the men uneasy."
"Strange. I'd thought that she'd been an exemplary witch. Had actually gone to the trouble of learning the basics of seamanship, which half of these priests never do. Predicted storms. Curerd an outbreak of dysentery, as I recall reading -"
"That's all true, but dammit! Our last witch was a nature-priest, and he dealt with trouble the way you want a Witch to. He protected the men. Conjured up a couple of sharks to fight the other side. Clean, simple. Not this one."
Viceroy Serragano was rifling through piles of papers on his desk, and pulls out a folder. Sweet Istishia's Eyes, the Viceroy had the report on his desk already! This wasn't going well. Faldano pressed on.
"A wave of her hand, and shapes out of your worst nightmares come bubbling up from the sea. Last month, she was with a launch that put in near Escalant for supplies, and the boat was attacked by some kind of sea turtle. She waved her hand and brought in half a dozen smouldering leech-things straight out of your worst nightmare. Scared off the turtle, all right, and three men who were on the launch with her! And the way she acts with the things she brings in. Not like our last one, who just sort of pointed and let them do their work. NO! Her voice drops an octave, I swear, and she bellows out nonsense 'Fear and grovel before me, least of the servants of the netherworld, and speed to this task.' I swear, I don't know what half the words she uses even mean."
The Viceroy was examining a page of the report. A page that, regrettably, was covered with Faldano's own handwriting.
"I see. So when you wrote: 'Witch de la Playa is to be commended for brave and resourceful work. As the boat was capsizing and the men were having difficulty simply staying close to the launch, her skill in spellery...I don't believe that 'spellery' is a word, Faldano, but I take your spirit at face value...her skill in spellery saved the lives of all eight crew members. While repairs were being made to the launch, she was able to heal a bite that Seaman Haultain had suffered from the turtle, probably saving him the use of his foot.' When you wrote that, you were...lying? Confused?
Faldano shifted uncomfortably. He mumbled.
"I have...re-evaluated my priorities, Viceroy. A nervous crew makes for a nervous captain."
Viceroy Serragano steepled his fingers, staring through them for a time at Faldano.
"Well. It so happens that this may have come at a fortunate moment, Captain. We have received word that Daggerdale is seeking envoys to assist with some sort of landbound trouble their having. They've been good trade partners lately, and it would serve us well to put them in our debt. Tell your witch that she has new orders. She is to pack and report to me here by sundown. By your reports, she has mastered the art of travelling great distances by magic. Let's see if she can make it all the way to Dagger Falls.
Note: this is why I love clerics. Although they're both clerics, Etta in no way fills the same niche as Jae Nevra. Good to see you again, Chambers!

You too Toli. Love that picture. Also, halfling conjuring up demons? For some reason it's scarier because she's a halfling.

Re: City of The Spider Queen [DnD 3.5, Forgotten Realms, Recruiting]
lol well it seems people are going for a darker type of character so I suppose my character will be the comic relief that aside, oh powerful DM you mentioned that you would give us some further requirements for our backstory once the type of game was chosen. I do believe we have settled on the good/neutral option and I myself have picked a race that hate the drow with every fiber of their being. Yes my character will be zany but she wo't be exempt from her peoples never ending hatred of the drow nor their desire to eradicate them... she will just want to do it faster! I will do a background for the character and make the necessary changes when you hand outthe specifics.

Re: City of The Spider Queen [DnD 3.5, Forgotten Realms, Recruiting]
A few details to be settled (weapon type in particular, depending on your answer to my question about darts) and background is very much still a work in progress.
Sitting down softly on the exquisite chair that was situated against the wall of the privy council's chambers Matias listened to the argument with some interest.
"This is a disaster!, If those papers reach Zhentil it will set our efforts against them back by decades."
"How did they even find them? You assured us they knew nothing"
"We must suspect treachery of course but whose"
"They were supposed to be under guard.."
"And so they were, Captain Namarr Adane and his men are dead or had you forgotten that and missed the furious complaints from Lord Adane? "
The argument is interrupted by a thud and erruption of paper as a set of leather bound scrolls thud onto the magnificent table and skid along it's length.
"Here, your missing papers"
"What?!" "Who are.." " Guards! Guards!" "How did you get in?"
"Through the doors."
Matias replies as he heads to the doors, pausing as they are thrown open with 3 guards rushing in, swords drawn.
The guard captain looks around in confusion before speaking "My lords? is there something amiss?"
The halfling who had thrown the papers onto the table was no where to be seen.
***
Some time later, sitting at a desk in the pitch black rooms of the agent who had so recently tried to leave with the stolen diplomatic correspondence Matias examined some of the now deceased agents letters with mild interest. The first three were on old troop movements, a subject of little interest to anyone now. More were on the ships docking and leaving Yuahn. By the ninth letter Matias interest was on the wane, the 11th was curious, a partly finished letter detailing a merchants tale about there being an unusually large number of drow raids in the dale lands not far from Daggerdale.
When his reading was finally complete he stood up, pocketed the letter on Dagger dale and a few of the others with other interesting pieces of information, stretched, put on his pack and set fire to the building as he left. By the door.

Re: City of The Spider Queen [DnD 3.5, Forgotten Realms, Recruiting]
Since the party seems to be Melee light and caster heavy I'll change my caster throw in to a HP hit things guy. I should have something up within a few hours.
Re: City of The Spider Queen [DnD 3.5, Forgotten Realms, Recruiting]
It does in fact appear that we will be playing the traditional party. As for character background info, you need to have a reason to be in the Daggerdale region, specifically Dagger Falls and have a reason to want to help rid the region from the recent drow attacks. Word has spread that Randal Morn is looking for aid from competent adventurers and mercenaries and a sizeable reward for completion of this task has been hinted at.
@Lostbutseeking: Darts will be enchanted as per the normal rules, sorry.

Posting intrest as a Elan Psion. My goal is to improve my mind, and shed my physical form, through the Psion Uncarenate and Metamind PrC's. I'd be a Telepath, but will take the feat to gain some other powers.

Yep no psionics in this campaign... I shall finish the fluff for my lovely character right now, compared to the others she will be more lighthearted. Think of her is a morale boost in the Underdark, a sunny character if you will On a completely unrelated note, once a day she can reach top speeds of 90 mph (145 kmph for us sane people) and sustain it for a minute (800 ft in one round take that anyone trying to attack muahahaha)

Wren was an odd child, she grew up in the City of Evereska with her family amongst the moon elves but unlinke her race she was much less reserved and rather reckless. The child's first word was 'faster' and she would often leap upon her farther shouting that one word over and over again until he would give into the demands. Most children learn to walk before they run but Wren was the opposite, she learned to charge forward at full speed and when asked to slow down she would promptly become confused and fall down. Her mother nearly had a nervous break down becuase Wren would never stop running in the house, damaging countless house hold items in the process. At that point her father stepped in and enrolled her in school, she was very young for her age but they needed to get her out of the house, in retrospect that was not his best idea. Most parents would let their children play outside but Wren had to be supervised constantly or else she would literally run out of the city and end up getting lost somewhere in the wilderness.
School was torture for the young girl because she had to constantly sit still and she would drive the other students mad because she would demand that the teacher go faster in his lesson. Despite being unbearably annoying, Wren was a gifted student, she was an exceptionally quick learner and would memorize anything put in front of her at a startling rate. The big problem was that the teachers never could keep up to her and she would often become disruptive because she was bored. Finally she was kicked out of school because the staff had had enough of Wren's disruptive and impatient nature. So her father did what any desperate parent would do with a hyperactive gifted child... put them into wizard's school!
Hoping that learning magic would slow there daughter down, considering the vast amount of time it takes to go through the sheer amount of accumulated knowledge of their people it was a good idea, which believe it or not worked for a SHORT period of time. Wren's parents hoped she would slow down and pick a school to focus on, they had a running bet between transmutation and conjuration, but this was saddly not the case. Wren burned through the arcane knowledge like a wildfire, she could not focus on one school because that took too long and limit her knowledge. Luckily there was a wise teacher that recognized this early on and guided Wren through her studies. Soon she became a full fledged generalist wizard who would bounce back and forth through the different schools of magic haphazardly. Her mentor was able to effectively channel Wren's boundless energy into the proper channels and shape her into a fine wizard. another subject Wren hopelessly failed at was scribing, she wouldn't be bothered to sit down in front of moldy tomes and crusty parchment for hours on end scribbling nonsense and getting ink everywhere. So instead she was given combat training, a rarity and an oddity among her people but Wren was a very tough and strong young elf so her mentor paired her with the city guard so she could burn some excess energy.
The day of her joining was a joyous one for her parents, they had selected a lovely feline familiar for their daughter and were excited to presnet it to her as a gift. Wren took one look at the cat, ran circles around it for a straight minute, then promptly informed her parents that it was an unfit familiar because it was too 'slow', the poor thing was left on the ground twichting. Her parents despaired and were saddened deeply by their daughter's reaction; however, her mentor was already a step ahead and had selected a humming bird for Wren. Wren was exuberent, she was so pleased with her new familiar that she ran around the entire city for an hour before passing out from exhaustion. After graduating from her studies, Wren focused further on combat and even took a liking to the ancestral weapon of her people. The days of her youth were quickly coming to an end though...
Now a full grown woman, Wren had finally found her niche in life as a warrior mage but when reports of a drow resurgence made their way through the city, Wren for the first time in her life slowed down and stood in a shocked silence. The abomination had returned, the blight of her people, Wren knew in her heart of hearts that despite the love and unending patience her parents displayed that they were ultimately disappointed in her. So she stepped forward and volunteered to investigate and if neccessary eradicated the drow threat for the honour of her people. Her parents were both simultaneously proud but horrified by their daughter's decision and when the time came for Wren to leave they couldn't help but weep. A small contingent of horsemen left Everesker but Wren was adament that she would not only go on foot but that she would in fact beat the others to Dagger Falls. The small group laughed but the mirth quickly turned to dread when Wren announced, completely straight faced, that she would take the Black road straight through Anauroch. The group panicked and desperately tried in vain to change her mind but Wren stubbornly went her own way. The journey was perilous for sure and at time Wren was definitely in mortal danger but she was too fast for any of her pursuers whether they be nomad bandits or magical predators. Within 10 days Wren arrived at Daggerfalls, a full week before the other detatchment, and once there she confirmed the rumors and happened to meet two unusual priest: a halfling that smelled of sea salt and a stern human, who seemed to have suicidal tendencies...

If you'd be willing to run a second Drow party, I'd love to play a cleric of Lloth without her powers... I'd even be willing to go do far as to try to solo it if there isn't enough other interest.

Spoiler
Matthazar Grimsblood, was born and bred in the underdark. In fact, he was born into slavery in a Drow house, like all of his clan. Raised to craft weapons and armor for his "masters", Mathhazar excelled at his tasks, but never claimed credit.
His sullen nature, rough apprence and the fact he never talks means he was often punished. But he never made a sound. He did his job, and never once showed any trace of emotion, colder and deader then the iron he worked.
But in a way, this was his great deception. Matthazar was drawing knowledge from the stones and metals, and was learning from them, even as he shaped them. In time, his magic was great enough to offer him a slim chance of escape. He took it.
He has now been working at a small forge for years, free from the Drow, and everyone else. However, the chance to beat some Drow heads in with his hammer? Time to get to work.
So, a Dwarf raised as a slave in a drow house that managed to escape. Theres no homebrew, but will just go ahead and ask for this form of Crafting based Enchanting. Crafting based, low key, and less powerful then normal enchanting.

@Grimsage Matt: No homebrew, sorry.
Also, no Stone Dwarves. I should have clarified that none of the Unearthed Arcana races are allowed. The Forgotten Realms has many types of Dwarf subtypes, I'm sure you'll find one you like.
@Mr. X: I'm afraid I wont have time to run two games of this.

Re: City of The Spider Queen [DnD 3.5, Forgotten Realms, Recruiting]
K then, I'll look up the varient dwarves, and see if theres a WoTc non-magical weapon enhancement system (Skill based, not magic based). I know theres been home brews on the forum for that, but lets see if WoTc thought of one (Besides Artificer. Or is it allowed).
Also, have something "Flawish" planed for my guy. He has a birth defect, that prevents him from vocalizing. He can grunt, he can growl, he just can't speak. He does know Sign Language though.

As I posted earlier in the thread this campaign follows a strict timeline. If you don't progress fast enough bad things will happen. I would avoid making characters based on crafting since you will have very very very little time to actually craft anything.
You can customize your character however you wish in terms of fluff but I wont be giving out any statistical bonuses based off of any flaws you give your characters.
