Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
@Grimsage Matt: D20 Apocalypse is fine I have the book. I'll refamiliarize myself with the material but it's WOTC so it's fine.
@Cdr.Fallout: Memory Implants is in d20 Future Tech not d20 Future. It's basically software that gives you starting occupation so yea just call it that and refer it to the Future Tech book if you want to take that as your optional extra.
@Giegue: Hacking is fine but rather than generate an entire cyberspace where only you get to delve I'm going to keep it easy and just use basic rolls rather than make a virtual computer environment. So it'll be your skills vs. an NPC or vs. a set DC usually.

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
It's d20 modern. Why not build a Tank, and run over me foes? Or build a heavy Assault helicopter and rain sweet firey death from above on them? Smart heros are good heros
Edit; Heres the levels of me build. Smart Hero 3/Engineer 7/Salvager 10. I can find most of what we need ter run, and can build the rest.
Edit 2; Here's the first parts of Matt Rosengren. Will get story up soon, but the long and short? He might have tried to convert some stuff into "Pure and Utter Awesome".

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
Well. I'll have to pull out the old books to recall everything I need to know, but I think this sounds fun.
I'm also prepping for a Warhammer 40k tournament this weekendso I may be a bit slower than those who have already posted here. If that's not a problem than I think I've got an idea that you might find interesting.
Thus far the characters presented have been pretty classic. The soldier, the antiheroic mage, tech-savant, Kira Yamato....
well. I'd like to build from the opposite end of the spectrum. I'd like to play a martian addict who's on the run from a rival gang. He either blew all his money on the ticket for the ship, or he possibly even stowed away or stole it. But now all he's got in the world are his two fists and an itch he can never quite scratch.
Maybe its drugs, maybe its simsense (if you are not familiar with the Shadowrun its more or less movies that you plug directly into your nervous system that can cause serious brain damage if they are overused, or if protective restrictions on them aren't in place that cause sensations far stronger than anything reality can produce).
Cross Mickie from Snatch, and Renton from Trainspotting. With perhaps a touch of Johnny Mnemonic and that's my inspirations. So have I interested you yet?

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
This is the first time I've ever really done anything with d20 modern, but the campaign sounds fun and the idea of mixing magic and technology has always been cool. That said, I may (probably will) make mistakes during character creation and I'd appreciate it if some people went over my character sheet.
Player exposition out of the way, I'd like to play some kind of Dragonblooded archaic weapon master or martial artist. Probably in some kind of violent profession, like mercenary or bounty hunter, who hides his true nature under a thin cover of politeness and charm. If a more good natured character would work better, I'll just make him or former soldier or even some kind of vigilante.
Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
@Flinn_Furious: Create what appeals to you so long as it's not purposely causing group tension. I don't mind (some) tension among the PC's as long as the players don't take it into RL. There is a Martial artist Advanced class to look at in the OGL stuff I provided. The main trick with d20 Modern is that it is a bit feat starved at lower levels so I suggest taking a look at a few advanced classes and figuring out what you'd like ahead of time. d20 encourages multi-classsing much more than DnD 3.5 does so don't worry about penalties for having multiple classes. Soldier and Gunslinger may also be advanced classed you want to take a look at if you are thinking mercenary.
The system is very similar to Star Wars Saga edition if you've played that.
Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
Just to let you guys know I am in vacation in Mane right now. I still have interest in this game, and will be committed, but I won't be posting up anything until Wednesday of next week. Also, a martial artist, or ANY kind of front line character would be great in this team.
Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
@Flinn_Furious: Magical brass knuckles would apply like any other magical weapon effect in d20.
@Meriss: Yes Psionics is allowed.
@Everyone: Since we lost a few days due to the forums being down I'm allowing a bit more time than originally planned for. If people are still interested just post your PC once it's ready, post the PC don't PM it to me please.

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
While I'm still working on some of the fluff, here is Matt Rosengren, a freindly and demented young man, who takes after his great-great grandfather, the Infamous "Freindly Mad Scientist". Inhertied his tools, MTG artifact deck and "Porter" from him.
Current goal; Aquire a pug. They're good luck.
Edit; Also, about the Craft[Chemical]. Arguably, I can use that to help make fuel, drinks, that sorta thing. Demolitions is just because, well, I am a bit of mad scientist after all.

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
Alright, I think an awesome character idea is finally starting to form. Going with the Dilettante background. He'll be a former playboy whose draconic line succeeded exceptionally well due to their natural charisma and intimidation. After being kidnapped by one of his fathers enemies and sent to their labs for experimentation, he manages to break free and tries to find the way back home.
The journey would a revealing one. All the crime, hunger, and general depressive malaise that surrounded the city makes him realize exactly how awful life is for other people.
The first foray into the shoes of a vigilante would be a momentous one. His first target, a rapist, turns out to be the mayor's nephew. Though the guy lived, his legs and left arm probably won't work again. He decides to leave for mars in an effort to get stronger and return after the heat has died down.
Questing Beast, how do we generate equipment? Can we take 10's or 20's and reduce the wealth bonus or just get equipment within the limit of our wealth bonus? Also, for my PL7 wealth check, may I get a Rage Implant?

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
Think I know why I'd be heading to Mar's. After the incident, I decided it was time to chase a old family legend. More accurtly, to aquire the orginal Matt Rosengren's "Codex of the Grim", which familoy legend is in the "Labrinth of Night" on mars. So, evade the cops and get a Mad Scientist who cheated the death penalty 42 times research notes? Sweet.

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
I am still around- sh, and and thought I'd share a bit about my character concept. His father is one of the wealthiest men alive; runs a megacorp that has a stranglehold on several industries, namely technology(Ships, Weapons, Mechs ect..) and biotech/genetic manipulation. The company is notable for being in addition to one of the most successful, one of the most corrupt and is pretty much the poster child for "evil megacorporation" if there ever was one(They've exploited all manner of people and even committed genocide in the past....if the DM wishes they could be used as an enemy or untrustworthy ally...)
My character is the only child of that company's CEO and is an arrogant, rude, selfish, snotty brat. He's smart and knows it, and loves to let other people know how superior he is to them as a result. My character's father is however, atypical of the usual rich parent. He's a ruthless, conservative, hard *** who makes his son work for everything in the hopes of making him a suitable successor for his business empire. As a result in addition to being a full-time student(he's a teenager) he works as a hacker for his father's company in return for enough money to live a reasonably wealthy lifestyle...
As for where the magic comes in, well, my character is also a geek/nerd who enjoys fantasy, anime, videogames, RPGs ect.. and as a result has a fascination with magic and the mystical planes. As a result he's taken it upon himself to learn magic and hopes to one day become a master mage. He already knows a few basic spells(Via the Magical Linage feat) and seeks to learn more.
Also, originally I was going to give him craft(chemical) and demolitions, but since we have somebody else with that would those be a bit redundant? My character won't have personal firearms proficiency to start, though he will have 3 cantrip spells he can use 1/day each as a sort of "in combat" action to make up for it. Demolitions and Craft(Chemical) where both to give him something to do in combat, but since we have somebody else with that would it be better to just take more knowladge skills since we're kinda short on those or would another character with bomb-making capacity not be too redundant?
Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
@Flinn_Furious: Yes to the Rage Implant but I need to know the source book of Dragon Blooded.
@Giegue: Go with what fits your PC concept. The game will flex (somewhat) around the PC's archetypes.
@All: For Wealth I allow you to take 20's on character creation for wealth checks rather than rolling BUT the standard rules of loosing wealth apply so anything 15+ reduces your wealth and anything over your wealth also reduces your wealth.

Re: Magic and Steel - D20 Modern / Future and Fantasy PbP
Questing Beast, I would like to combine grenades with arrows. What would the DC for that be, considering the current technology? Should I use the purchase DC outlined in the resources here? Or just use the materials in questions, i.e. arrows and grenades? And before anyone asks, this is in no way influenced by the upcoming Arrow tv show based on the Green Arrow. None at all.
Spoiler
Okay yes, but only like 50% influenced. The rest is trying to make use of my free archaic weapons feat that fits with the vigilante image and doesn't overtly interfere with hand to hand combat.
