Finding Players (Recruitment)Look for players for chatroom, play-by-post, or even real-life games here. Threads will expire after 3 months, so be sure to move important information to your OOC thread.
I've just worked my way through the chronicles of Joe Wood, and I've got an itch to run a game where the players play NPC classes.
I'm thinking that the players will be new recruits in the town guard, and will have to deal with everything from drunks causing trouble to catching the occasional pack of roving murder-hobo adventurers. I'd be open to a co-DM as well, as that would make the logistics much less difficult.
That actually sounds awesome. I would love to play.
Since we would be recent recruits to the town guard, would we eventually start taking levels in warrior, or are you thinking commoner all the way through?
I was actually just working on a game with pretty much this exact same concept.

My PCs met outside a burning tavern, and set out to discover who toasted their drinking hole.
To avoid harming the sanity of the DM I can no longer:
* Cast flesh to stone on a annoying Druid
** Cast Rock to mud on a Druid statue
*** Scoop mud into little ceramic pots
**** Plant tree's in individual ceramic pots
***** Claim that I have helped them become one with nature
DM: Okay so with your ridiculously high search score you find some Elven Chainmail.
Player: I attack.
DM: What? What are you attacking?
Player: The kobold wearing the chainmail.
DM: You have been sitting here this entire time, how do you not know what's going on?
Player: I heard someone say something about Kobolds...
DM: Well yea like an hour ago... okay, so you set on fire. 1dGrape damage.
I know the Ins and Outs of 3.5 and I am experienced DM IRL, just not in PbP tbh.
Ill give Co-DMing a go if you could just fill me in on what you expect me to do :)
What're the rules for these NPC classes? We all warriors? Commoners? Anything from the DMG? Generics from UA? Monster classes?

There seems to be an awful lot of interest for this. I think I'm gonna add to it.
Besides, I never played a low-level game before, much less a commoner campaign, so it sounds like an interesting experience.

I must say, commoner games have a surprising amount of interest...
Well, you know, some of us get bored of being superhuman heroes day in, day out. It's escapism, you know? Sometimes we just want to be an average man on the street, with a 9-5 job and a family to feed.

Yeah, I like to play commoners for a change, I'm already a demi-god hero IRL, I want to play a lowly commoner as a reality escape.

System: 3.5 D&D
Player Count: 4
Style of Play: Low-power town guard game.
Allowed Content:
PHB
PHB 2
DMG
DMG 2
Character Creation:
Classes Allowed: Warrior, Expert, Aristocrat, Adept.
Backstory: You are all conscripts in the local army from the same village.
Experience: 1st level
Wealth: Standard 1st level, take the average.
Ability Scores: 22 point-buy.
Hitpoints/Health: Max first, average after.
Alignment: Good or Neutral.
Other Notes: You are from the same small village as the other players. You've been conscripted to fight for the local lord, and have been given very little training or equipment.
I could perhaps be persuaded to allow a feat or two from additional sources, but only if such feats were absolutely necessary to the success of a build. This will be an extremely low-optimization experience.
There will be no homebrew allowed for this game.
EDIT - EXPANDED NOTES.
I will be selecting one party member for each role, unless I'm having serious difficulty choosing between two applicants.
The aristocrat is a Captain, barely ranking at all. The other members will be the lowest ranking, basic soldiers.
None of the party are to be trained soldiers: All of you were conscripted, more or less press-ganged against your will.
Any gold you save from character creation is actual physical coin on your person, unless you invest it in something you didn't bring to war with you.
The campaign will continue after the war is over, and you'll need to return to your civilian life. Keep this in mind as you create your backstories.

I hope we stay warrior or commoner, maybe expert at best.
Usually this kind of games break when someone starts using magic or alchemy.
Oh wait. MAAAAAAAN

Don't mind my opinion, it was just that, and seeing as the DM allows Adept class, I don't think he would have any problem with your character idea.
Again, just my opinion, and you should not take it into account anymore as I am bowing out

Only reason I look at adept is to look at being a potion throwing 'ninja'.
I am however doupting that it will be feasible in a war, planning on a woodsmen now.
