@Winthrow There are certainly places to find it, but I'm not sure if linking to them would be the wisest thing. Google away and I'm sure you won't have to look too hard.
@Aneurin Serenity ruleset sounds good to me. We'll wait for some more input if there is any, but if we use the Serenity ruleset, would you rather be the Firefly crew or make up all new characters?
Brand new characters. The idea of using someone else's character has never been a favourite of mine; I could do it, if that's what everyone else wanted, but it wouldn't be my favourite option.
I certainly would be interested in this! I have the Serenity Rulebook at home but haven't had the chance to do more than thumb through it.
So long as somebody can tell me what to roll and when... I can manage the rest!
I would definitely prefer to play all new characters though. Not point in trying to play the canon any better than they were already played and that only leaves room for tarnishing their reputation.
And that... would be a gorram shame.

Alright, interest! Here are some potential overarching structures for how we could do this.
1. Y'all are a crew in a situation more or less similar to the characters in Firefly. Finding jobs of questionable morality, overcoming new and exciting problems while trying to complete them, and struggling to repeat the process often enough to survive. One of you is the captain, a la Mal.
2. Same as #1, except the captain would be controlled by the GM.
3. Y'all are members of the other side, running down and catching those silly criminals, be they rebel scum, dangerous fugitives, or wanted murderers.
At any rate, feel free to mock up some characters! Whatever character you want to create, for now.
My vote would be for Option #2... it seems more fair and could be a great way to introduce "hooks" and missions for us without it seeming too forced or difficult to digest.
That being said - I think I'd like to be the pilot (or possibly the mechanic). I have no real idea what steps to go through to get that down 'on paper', however.

I'm feeling like being the muscle of the crew. Likely the commando/guerrilla type, as opposed to being just big and mean. Maybe some sort of of warrior-philosopher.
I would probably go for the crew doctor/ Face type. You know, all pretty and dollish, not physically tough. Right good at patching people up, and a good bedside manner to boot.

I think it would be fun having the Captain as a player character, but I wouldn't mind option 2
As for ideas, I tend to take what's left. Although - I once played a hydroponics expert who had a garden on board - real vegetables, strawberries, the works. A very nice older hippie-type lady who had a dark, dark past. Sadly, the game never finished. I might revive that concept, though... She was fun to play. And I just rewatched Silent Running
