Wait, that would totally work! Just mine the scooter with explosives, lazily ride up to the door, give the guards a wink and a wave, then run off cartoon-style. Odds are, it'll take them longer to recover their wits than it takes you to run clear and blow up the scooter-bomb.

Are we committing the full Stormtrooper company to this assault, or just my platoon? It's sort of important, because we don't have enough LAAT's to quickly transport an entire company.

Even if in character I'm leader, we are still out of character and ic a team. Sooooo, opinions?
I'd say use the troopers to assault, while we make a fast beeline for the control room, then the target.
and as many troopers as we can lift off quickly.
Idea: leave one diverse squad behind to organize partisan resistance, maybe with any pow's we break out but cant lift off. If we have spare rifles to give em...

Each LA-AT seats 30 men. A Company has 153 men. Jarik, Jax and one other guy can ride in the dawn/shuttle, or you could leave some troopers home so all the PCs and their allies can squeeze into an LA-AT.

The Dawn has room for 130 tons of cargo space. It might be a bit shaky without seat restraints, but we could put any extra troops in there, and still have plenty of room for any POWs we manage to rescue.
I doubt any of the prisoners will complain about a bumpy ride.
Edit: Also, for the game's sake, I suggest not splitting the party. IC we can say we're heading to the control room, maybe bring some stormtroopers with us, but I think we all should plan to stick together. Just my opinion.

Hmm. That could work. Jarik Jax and the Captain running the company could ride down in the Dawn and then link up with rest of the company for the assault. We (the infantry) need a mission though. 'Assault the prison' is too vague. Breach and secure a control room perhaps?
Also 150+ men aren't exactly a surgical tool if you catch my meaning. We can certainly kick in the doors, but the rest would be up to the PCs, minus Jarik. As a Lieutenant, I have certain responsibilities to my platoon, so I cant just run off and leave my sergeant to command. Where I go, the platoon has to follow.
I'm also part of hierarchy now that goes: Kel->Captain->Jarik, so I have to follow all those peaky orders or people get killed.
Edit: As TC mentioned, I would also love for the PCs to stick together on this op. It would greatly increase our chances of success I think.
Control room is a good target, armory is another. #1, with the weapons there, we'll be able to arm the prisoners. #2, If we cut off the prison guards' ammo supply, resistance will dry up pretty quickly.
We should also have some forces preventing reinforcements from entering the prison.

I'm with TC. Initial objectives should be a control room, armory and main entry points. From there move to take the VIP ASAP. Freeing the prisoners should only be done if it doesn't hinder our progress to the main objective. Fighting through a riot would be inconvenient.
@Fel:
Two things; 1. Can we take out some of the Kybucks from the back of the fourth platoon's lartie? That would let me and Jax fit in there I would think.
Actually why not just leave the all the Kybucks behind? Are we really going to need them?
2. Can we get a picture of the prison? I'd really like to see what I'm assaulting.
Note that we have the ship's Nune-class shuttle, Ronto, available in addition to the 5 LAATs and the Red Dawn; IIRC, the shuttle can carry 30 passengers plus 250 tons of cargo. So lifting capacity shouldn't be a problem, unless/until we start losing ships.
I had a couple of additional questions about the facility we're hitting. First, the defenses keep us from going in through the out door - but does anything stop us coming back out via the entrance? It's much easier to clear one LZ than two. Second, would it be possible to get in a sneak attack against the facility's communications to keep them from calling for help?
Let's say, or example, that a single Predator broke off from a routine patrol flight reporting mechanical difficulties and descended to hair-raisingly low altitude above the planet's surface to make a strafing attack against the prison's long-distance communications hub. The fighter's distress call at least potentially explains not only the explosion on the surface (and loss of contact with the prison), but also our dropping a stormtrooper company "to secure the site against hostile natives." That might let us get a strike team in place at the prison entrance without tipping off the other enemy forces in the area.

The shields will be down unless the prison is attacked. When it is, the shields will be raised in descending order (3, 2, 1). The Laser Turrets can only fire through the weakest shield (shield 3). The Light Bridge is assumed to be always inactive. The Walls of the facility are made of Durasteel and are quite thick. The doors are large enough to fit 2 LA-ATs in side by side with room to spare. They can be hotwired or opened via the guard post, which is right next to the entrance. The Chasm is over 300 meters deep and surrounds the entire mountain/prison.

You know those spikes that many parking lots have? The ones that are completely harmless when going over them properly but going the wrong way pops your tires? That's the way this facility is designed. it is completely automated and the guards have no way of using the weapons/threats against you. They will affect both sides equally. Essentially Darth Krayt wanted to make a death trap who only possessed one viable exit.
EDIT: Yes it is possible to sneak attack the facility because you are currently considered an ally. So if you make it look like an accident, then you will not garner suspicion.

Hokay... new info = new plan? Load up all our forces onto the Dawn and the Ronto. Fly the shuttles under the shields with a friendly IFF, and destroy the communications array and laser turrets with a surprise attack. Then the two ships can cover each others' landing.
Once the attack begins, have the Kestrel open fire on the frigates, and jam their communications. If the Kestrel can take them, then attempt to destroy them, otherwise bait them away from the planet.
Take out the light bridge to prevent enemy reinforcements (I'm going to assume local air superiority because that's the only way we're going to be able to evac).
Drop off all the troops & sweep the prison, looking for the control room, the armory, and our scientist.
Deactivate the shields, rescue the POWs if we can, and get to the exit.
Load everyone up onto the shuttles, and rendezvous with the Kestrel, or jump to hyperspace if the frigates have driven her off.
What do you guys think?

I submit that we don't want to take on multiple frigates with our one frigate unless we absolutely have to - that's the reason for flattening the prison's comms right at the start, so that the rest of the defenders don't ever get called in. That's also part of the reason I suggested making the initial attack with a single Predator faking an in-flight emergency, then sending the shuttles in afterward to conduct a mock search-and-rescue operation. Apart from that, though, yeah. That's pretty much what I was thinking.

The communications desperately need an immediate fragging, regardless of the rest of the plan, so I'm all for sending a pred in to fake a problem like Graff suggests.
After that, I feel like TC's plan is an excellent one. After comms are down, move in under a friendly IFF for a 'rescue mission', take down the guns and go in through the roof or the front door. I feel like a roof entrance may be messy, as we all learned on our first mission that really thick durasteel take a lot of explosives to open up, and it would probably destroy a good chunk of the facility.
So we definitely need a way to get to the door, and I'm not sure there is enough room for both the Dawn and the Ronto. The LAATs may be our best option for that. Thoughts?

Both will just barely squeeze through. The Red Dawn's paint may get a bit scraped up though.

Well that solves that. I think the plan to get in will work. Once we do that, it boils down to fighting our way to the objective, and we're assaulting the place with a company of men, and five very talented individuals.

I'm thinking once the laser turrets are taken out, we hover the Dawn outside the front doors and send a team to open them. Then we use the Dawn's heavy laser cannons and/or ion cannon and/or concussion missile launcher to blow away any immediate resistance at the entry point.
Also, is Ice able to secure durasteel cutting tools from the Kestrel's lab, in case they start welding doors shut?
