Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
I'm not completely sure, but natural weapons used by predatory animals such as hawks and such are primary weapons. For more docile beasts, they are secondary weapons. Ember, Vasili's horse, has hooves as a natural weapon - but because she's not combat-trained, she is considered docile. And thus attacks with -5 to the attack roll.
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Hello everyone,
Walker Hammond will be coming to join your group after you fight these bandits.
Description:
Spoiler
Shaggy haired and dressed in muddy rags Walker would not look the least bit divine, were it not for the manner in which he carries himself. With a straight back he holds himself high, seeming even taller than he already is. His strong jaw and muscled physique allow him a commanding aura, although he rarely puts to use.
He wears a durable travelling cloak and walks with a staff of burnt wood, carrying several spears wrapped together as well. The large backpack he travels with holds all of his belongings and he wears piecemeal armour made from a few heavy pieces of wood tied onto his clothing.
Backstory:
Spoiler
Farming is the most courageous occupation denizens of the River Kingdoms can choose for themselves. Walker's parents managed a small farm in Mivon, a short ways south of the Stolen Lands, not far from a small village. It was them who taught the boy who would become Saint Walker the values of hard work, honesty, and perseverance. They raised Walker to be true to others and himself, and he happily absorbed their teachings. In the relative peace in which his family lived, Walker managed to grow up without fear of the bandits that plagued so much of the River Kingdoms. Strong and popular, Walker was happy with his life and looked forward to living out his days as a farmer, but on the night of the new moon the visions began.
Walker woke in the morning, drenched in sweat. His dreams that night were full of horrifying images of his farm in flames, his friends and family dead. At first dismissing the nightmare as just that, he was unnerved when night after night the vision would repeat. As word spread of Walker's dreams, the village grew uneasy. Many thought the youth's dreams were prophecy of a terrible fate to come, but just as many discounted the boy's visions. That changed when word reached the village that a warband of Tiger Lord barbarians was ransacking the countryside, headed in the direction of Mivon. Many began to make plans to leave the village before the Tigers Lords arrived, while others prepared to hide or board up their homes. The mood was dire until on the night of the full moon, Walker's dream changed.
This time, he dreamt of a figure, clad in white light and holding high a staff of brilliant energy, descending from the sky to drive away the darkness. For the first time in half a month Walker awoke invigorated and full of hope. The people took heart at this new development and many decided to stay and await the arrival of Walker's messiah. Several families abandoned their homes, but those who believed Walker's prophecy made preparations to drive off the Tiger Lords with the aid of the saviour that would come to save them.
Two days later, the Tiger Lords host appeared on the horizon. The horde descended on the town and rapidly overcame its meager defences. Walker, garrisoned in the mill, was crushed under a collapsing ceiling as the Tiger Lords razed the mill to the ground. Unconscious, Walker lay there for two days. In his sleep he heard voices that would whisper on the edge of his hearing. When at last he opened his eyes, he found that he was looking down upon his own mangled form lying in the rubble of the mill. He watched as slowly the body began to shift and move, pulling up out of the rubble. The voices he had heard now grew louder, whispering "Saint, Saint, Saint," over and over. The body began to glow faintly, and in his hand Walker's body grasped a beam of wood from wreckage. As the body was lifted into the air, Walker realized with despair that in his dreams he had seen himself. The voices grew louder still, "Saint, Saint, Saint" No messiah would come, there was only him. As the light grew blinding Walker discovered he was falling down into the rubble of the mill. "Saint Walker"
As he picked himself up from the rubble he still held the burnt beam from the mill. His wounds healed, but Walker's mind was in a state of shock. Walking through the village he saw that the barbarians had left no one. The dead were lying in the streets, all dead, all his fault. Why did he have these visions? Why did he promise all these people there was hope for salvation? Why him?
Broken and alone, Walker travelled north. Without purpose he walked, with only the voices for company. At first he hated the voices, and blamed them for what happened. Walker could only do that for so long though, his parents did not raise him to run from a burden justly deserved and so he shouldered the singular responsibility for the deaths of a hundred friends.
The voices did not go away however. They called him "Saint Walker" and his dreams each nigh were a miasma of visions. He saw himself doing great things, and helping people. In time he began to listen. They told him he would do good, make amends for the deaths of so many innocents, and he desperately wanted to believe them. He needed to be promised that it would be better, that there was still hope for him, and so he became their emissary. He would listen to the voices, he would help people, he would create hope for himself and for others.
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Hello from me too.
It seems that I will be lucky enough to play at your table. This is Deran, a roguish aasimar paladin with a sense of humor and a dislike of pomp. Please be assured that, provided that the DM agrees, Deran is as much 'serve and let live' as possible, who does not preach or proselytize.
(Small, very small changes may come to the sheet, but only marginal ones.)
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Welcome guys. I think both characters will do nicely with the party .
Question for Angstrom (because I am nosey and like learning about different builds), How does the +5 attack from Quarterstaff break down? I know you get +1 attack from Wood Bond, but can't seem to figure out how you get to +5 with a 3 STR mod.
I'm reasonably sure that you are correct, since I know almost nothing about building an Oracle, just curious where the other +1 comes from.
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Welcome Guys, I'll work on your intros now whilst we wait for the last two to post IC. Good thing is, your both of the holy background which means I have a pretty easy way for you both to be here that will add not only to your backstory but hopefully be interesting as well.
Some nice attacks in the IC thread so far, except for the hawk, heh. Your also doing well with describing which bandit is being attacked. I'm gonna have to look into someway for me to label them in future, or stick up a grid or something. Just a lot of work in photoshop, but that shouldn't be a problem I usually have plenty of time in the mornings before work.
So, Crimson, Winter, your up, lets see if you can pull off some good attacks as well.

Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
You might want to consider a Battleship-kinda grid, Harthar. You know, B1, C2, D3, that kinda stuff... I've seen some RP threads use that, and it seems to work out well - particularly for arcane casters who have to keep tabs on where area-of-effect spells hit.
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Yeah, I'll try and do something like that, my only problem atm is writing it in photoshop. When I chuck the text in it is like as big as the whole map lol. Probably something to do with resolution, pixels and the fact that I've grabbed so many pictures and freetransformed them to their current sizes. Next time I'll probably save as jpg, bring it back into photoshop and then do it, might work... We'll have to see.

Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Psst... Hey, ApatheticAbacus. You get to attack again. We're doing surprise round plus first actual round. I think you only did the surprise round in your post.
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Yeah... I've noticed that more often than not the die roller seems to favor the lower-end of the roll spectrum. Usually there are rituals to placate such angered Die Gods, but I don't know what to do with the roller. I mean, where do I even place the incense holders made of the skulls of Warhammer players?
Also, I've been meaning to ask... is the Daring Acts optional rule in place? Essentially it's a special rule made for gunslingers, whereby a character can gain grit essentially by being a badass motherf***er, doing dangerous and risky things that just look and feel awesome.
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Ok, so I guess we'll go with only the surprise round to begin with and then have Crimson and Winter post again for the second round and then continue on. I'll chuck up a post now. Please read the entirety of my posts so that you get all of the relevant information in future.
North: Sorry buddy, that rule doesn't apply here, your character seems badass enough without giving it more badassness. :P

Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Hey Harthar, I'm pretty sure you can actually do a Handle Animal to have your horse do the charge with his bite attack and then you get a single attack at the end and get to also use the charge bonus.
Or at least that was the conclusion we came to with the Cavalier in my RotR game.
We ended up re-fluffing the bite to a kick/trample because we didn't like carnivorous horses, but it'd be a shame to not use the attacks of your animal companion when they are appropriate.
Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
I was under the impression that the animal didn't get an attack at the end of the charge? That it was only the rider that did. Effectively the Charge by the animal is a 'run', at the end of which the rider can still make its attack. That is how I interpreted it. But either way I won't order my mount to attack anyway. You'll see in my post that either way it doesn't really matter. Its actually pretty cool how it turned out and I totally didn't plan it that way, it just happened. I love how things meld together to make stuff possible.
Anyways, I'm going to post up most of the Surprise and First rounds now, please tell me if I've done anything wrong.

Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
We reached that conclusion after some back and forth and a thread on the Paizo boards asking for clarification to the rules lawyers there. If I'm wrong that means I may need to re-address the whole mess in my game .
Either way, just wanted to mention it in case it was helpful. I don't like the fluff of horses attacking all the time, so I like it better your way personally.

Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
Heh, yeah, I had my fingers crossed the whole time I was rolling the saves for Elanore and let me tell you, it was another bad roll. A 7 against your DC save of 15, lol. Worse than the bandit's whose was like 13 with a -1 to his will save. Pretty bad hehe, especially when Elanore is the one with the easiest way of saving Winter.
EDIT: As for the CLW, I think you said they should go to the ones with the least health/armour... which I am thinking is actually Winter and Elanore :P.

Re: Harthar's Kingmaker Part One: The Stolen Lands OOC
How do you want to do this, then? Presuming Oleg doesn't suddenly feel heroic?
If I'm counting correctly, Vasili can make it next to Winter in one round, and hopefully not suck up an AoO on the way (dammit, I knew I should've put a rank in Acrobatics...). But I would need you, Abacus and Phil to keep the bandits off of Vasili's back while he makes Winter chug that CLW; Vasili's not especially well-statted for melee.
Or do you go and the rest of us pelt the bandits with everything we've got?
