Default Help with a city map?

Hey all, I've just recently gotten drawing pens (fine-liners) and now I'm wanting to make some maps with them. First, I want to create a city map, a map of a city with typical locations, Market District (The city square), Waterfront, the Slums (Next to Waterfront), Living Quarters district, Noble district (with the King's castle.) & Temple District (With 10 temples, one abandoned, other one dedicated to the ruler deity, three other ones for intermediate deities and five for lesser deities.) and some Farmlands around the city.

Okay, with all those things set in stone. I want to figure out how to fit all these on either A4 or A3, this is where I need help.

Edit: Also, I need to know what style would fit for this kind of a city map.

Have you checked out the Cartographers' Guild? They've got tons of tutorials and examples of finished maps that should really help.

Sadly, they don't have a tutorial (that I know of) that is for traditional art way of doing city maps. I'm trying to get used to the fine-liners so yeah.

I suggest you do a rough map first, to get the layout correct.

Rough sketch of the city. Now I need to find a way to make that into a cool map that will be useful, I have A4s and A3s to use, which would be better?

A3's better to start with, but don't try and make it full size so if you go over you've got room to expand into.

When I draw maps I pencil in the rough layout of the main thoroughfares, any wide open spaces such as market squares, large important buildings then fill in smaller buildings before inking. If you want I can try and dig up some maps of mine to illustrate what I mean.

I guess an important question is how detailed and in what style you want the map as well, as that will dictate the best way to create it.

As a side note if you want to make a more realistic feeling city, it is best to not try and have everything in neat little blocks as it is an inorganic way for a city to grow. By that I mean how did all the temples end up together? The city likely will have grown from the river backwards so there would perhaps be lesser temples closer to the waterfront, with the larger ones built later when the city had more money.
There would probably be several marketplaces throughout the city, especially a large trading port.
Similarly the castle would be positioned on the best ground for defence when it was built, which could possibly place it on the outskirts of the city, or quite close to the centre.

But I could just be overthinking it all

Savannah's and Zorg's advice are usually always worth listening to, I've found.
