"Awww. That's not fair," Brinika says. "Everyone should pick their colors. I wonder what color I'd have if I had magic."

"There's links between personality and magic colour. So I'm not sure changing it is a very good idea, although I can't recall any known instances of somebody's colour changing." More accurately, it's magic shape and personality.

Brinika's ears twitch. "So everyone's color matches their personality? Weird. I've never heard of anything like that. I have a cousin who's a wizard. But I haven't seen him in a long time."

"Oh, really? Do you know what type of magic he specialises in, if any?" Natalie's world is slightly more flexible magically than Myrim's, but not by much. And 'wizard' is a generalised term for users of magic and no branch of magic is actually called 'wizardry'.

Brinika shakes her head.
"I don't know. I knew even less about magic when I last saw him. I think he's still learning, though."

"My father says 'a true wizard never stops learning'. I think that means nobody ever knows everything about magic, and I think that's especially true here where so many types of magic mix and mingle." Natalie smiles as she quotes her father.

Yuki grins as Lume turns into a sail ship. She applauds him quietly.

"Wow. That is cool."

"I don't think my cousin's parents liked it when he became a wizard. A lot of goblins don't like magic," Brinika says uncertainly. "They say it's dangerous and unpredictable and we should stick to making machines."

The Sea Elf boy examines ship-Lume critically. He'll find out exactly how accurate a ship representation Lume is, as he's lived on one for his entire life. "Can you make one bigger, that's solid enough to carry people?" If so, he's sorted for a lifetime. Unless Lume objects, anyway.

"Well, yes, it can be. But then, so are machines, if you don't know what you're doing. If I had to repair a steam engine, I'd make it worse. It's similar to fiddling with magic that you don't understand properly, only less likely to turn everybody within a mile into pink frogs for half an hour." Only difference is, it's possible to understand a machine much better than it is to understand magic and nobody truly understands it enough to confidently know where their limitations are.

Lume is a fairly accurate representation - he's been on plenty of ships, and is familiar enough with the design that he would be seaworthy, if slightly inefficient.
A voice emanates from the prow of the ship, drawing attention to the figurehead, which is an intricately detailed woman's body, fully clothed in formal wear.
"I could, and some have, but I would need to consume a great deal of food beforehand - enough that it would weigh almost the same as a ship. Once I was at sea, I would have no problem maintaining this, as fish are drawn to the light-form, and easily consumed."

"So you could become a ship. That would be weird."

Yuki imagines people crawling all over her body and she grins at the idea.

Prism just ducks her head and looks down shyly at the question, while Scylla shakes her head, "Nothing!" She exclaims quickly. I think she heard it wrong...

"There is that. Of course, Uncle John would demand coffee. Well, he calls it coffee. I call it milk and sugar with a little coffee in it." Patty keeps a discreet eye on the zucchini knife as she finishes preparing the tea and settles gracefully into a seat. "So, what have I missed since the last time we talked?"

Meanwhile, Nicholas waves his paws in the air, demanding belly rubs from the two far-spawn.

"Well, I don't know much about machines either. Just that they keep the colony running," Brinika says. "My friend Bunduk's father says machines aren't for girls, but that's silly. Lots of girls are good with machines."

"Can you differentiate between different types of fish?" Because the Sea Elves have an agreement with the Ocean Mother, a powerful spirit of the sea. So long as they eat only certain fish, the Ocean Mother will try to keep sea serpents, kraken and sea dragons away from their ships. A ship that breaks the rules is more likely to be found and destroyed by the mighty ocean-going predators.

"That is silly. The Head of Practical Engineering at dad's university is a woman, and she's made aeroplane engines more efficient by twenty per cent." Natalie agrees. She doesn't mention said Head of Practical Engineering is a dwarf because it's not actually relevant.

"Aunt Reelshka keeps telling me that I shouldn't pay attention to what other goblins say about what girls can and can't do," Brinika says. "I think she's right."

"Anyone can do everything they put their mind to. Or, is it everyone can do anything they put their mind to? I'm not sure." Natalie heard it on a radio in her homeworld.

[Morty]

[Grounds]

"Don't they both mean the same?" Brinika points out.

Natalie thinks about it for a moment. "Yes. Which means I can stop worrying about whether or not I've got it wrong." Natalie smiles.

Brinika nods happily. "So what do you want to do? Maybe we should make a leaf hat for you now."

"Oh, I don't have a hat. But, I do have some glue in my rucksack; we could make find some acorns and nuts and sticks and things and glue them together." Natalie's not a hat person; they don't stay on all her heads very well.

"Oooooh! Yeah! Let's do that!" Brinika squeals enthusiastically.

"Hang on, I'll go get it." Natalie smiles and will turn back into a bird and fly into the woods. She's left her rucksack three quarters of the way up a tree; bird-shape is required to find it and monkey to take it to the forest floor. But it won't take her too long to return to where Brinika is, though Brinika may have moved. Also, now she's wearing shoes.

Brinika stays where she is, waiting for Natalie to come back, visibly excited.

Lume reverts back to his normal, humanoid shape.
"I can tell the difference between types of fish with the exact same capacity regardless of my form. I don't exactly have eyes, but I see just fine - all around me, in fact. My current knowledge of fish is... limited, but if I was taught I suppose I could differentiate as much as someone needed me to. What are you getting at here?"

Natalie will be running from the forest, as fast as she can, about now. When she arrives, she'll be panting for breath. Her human form doesn't get as much exercise as the others.

Brinika bounces a little in place when Natalie arrives.
"Do you have it? Can we start?"

Natalie nods. She's still too winded to speak as she has run since she reached the bottom of the tree in which she had stored her rucksack.

Yuki stays quite though she thinks the sea elf child seems to want Lume to be his new ship. This seems silly to Yuki, first off Lume might not want to be a ship, and secondly replacing the boat won't replace all the people lost. She also remembers that she doesn't know his name yet and to ask that soon.

"If you eat the wrong types of fish, the Ocean Mother will get upset and stop directing the sea-spirits to divert kraken and sea serpents from the ship." The Ocean Mother is one of the more powerful spirits, as she represents an entire ocean so all of its attendant spirits, those representing the currents, the fish, the whales, the sea monsters and to a lesser extent the islands, sea birds, mangrove forests and the ocean winds.
