Lore of the Founding: The Heron family is an ancient house. While their location, deeds, nature and loyalties change with the teller, the name Heron appears in even the oldest of histories, and that alone is a source of great pride. The Maesters of the Citadel speculate that the Heron line is descended from a senior branch located somewhere on what is today the Blackwater Bay, and this would indeed explain the mentions of House Heron in histories of the south, and that in fact the Herons of Heronhold are merely a cadet branch of this extinct line. However the first reliable records of House Heron are found in the Vale with the arrival of the pirate-king Germain Heron, a man who led a coalition of privateers and mercenaries to do what no other had ever achived – successfully invade the Vale by ignoring its formidible natural defences entirely. Histories of this period refer to constant raiding along the coast, and daring assualts down the Vale's rivers to plunder previously invulnerable fortresses, indeed in some heavily-debated opinions on this era to be found within the Citadel of Oldtown, Germain was on the cusp of conquest before his death in the Burning of Strongsong when a coalition of the greatest petty-kings fell upon his raiders before they could escape back to their ships.
The records are once more muddled after this point, but when House Heron bent the knee to the First Men's King of Mountains and Vale it controlled much of the north-eastern coast of the Vale from it's fortress of Heronhold, a mighty fortress built out of the mountains above Heron's Port.
However with the Invasion of the Andals, House Heron's star fell. Against the superior technology and unity of the Andal Invaders, House Heron's fleets were crushed and with them their control over their bannermen was lost. Soon all that remained to House Heron was their ancestral stronghold, but all was not lost. Again and again the Andals would attempt to besiege the fortress, and each time they would be repelled, although at great cost to the population and industry of Heron's Port. With the vast caverns within the mountainside of House Heron's citadel packed with supplies enough to last for years, and plentiful access to fish in the time between assaults, the Andals were forced to acknowledge that they could not overcome Heronhold through siege. While most of the Vale fell to the Andals as the spoils of war, Heronhold was one of the few that bent the knee and maintained some semblance of their previous holdings.
Heron's Port would never regain it's place as the center of a regional trading network, but it remains a minor trading post to this day and in combination with the Iron and Silver mines in the mountains of Heronhold provides House Heron with greater income than could be expected otherwise from a house of their meager domain. This is reflected in the military power of House Heron, which despite it's unimposing size is one of the best equipped and trained in Westeros. The Heronhold Guard and Rangers are the pride of their lord, forces brave men and seasoned commanders do not face lightly.
Proposed Recent Events:
Spoiler
Recent History: Despite a run of competent rulers and good stewardship, House Heron's recent history is chequered. Under the rule of Danial Heron and his lady-wife Margaret the house's wealth and knowledge continued to steadily grow, until an unfortunate liason between Joanna Heron and the handsome young Lord of Storms End during a tournament at the Eyrie. The meeting was discovered by Lady Joanna's brother, Frederick, who had been enjoying the festivities and with addled judgement immediately confronted Robert, clearly drunk. Blade in hand he demanded that Robert face him, and when Arryn guardsmen tried to restrain him he attacked. It was only due to the intervention of Lord Jon that the guardsmen were prevented from killing him. When Lord Danial arrived to negotiate his son's release Lord Jon was merciful in order to keep the peace, but it was made clear in no uncertain terms that Frederick was to be kept away from the Eyrie from that point forth. Lord Danial left the next day with his shamed children in toe. Lord Jon's household were discreet but the rumours soon turned to fact when it became clear that Joanna was with child, much to the embarrasment of House Heron. Embarrasment turned to grief when complications arose during Joanna's delivery which, despite the best efforts of Maester Daemon proved fatal. A son, almost forgotten in grief survived her. The house spent some time in mourning following her death and failed to keep up to date on the developments surrounding Lyanna Stark's disappearance.
When the Mad King called for the heads of Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark, Lord Danial was ill informed of the situation, and withdrew with his son Alf to consider their alliegiences. In the meantime however, embittered by grief, Frederick had left to join the loyalists, leaving a letter urging them to join him at Castle Canden. Soon after his departure however, news of Jon Arryn's victorious battle against royalist forces to the south of the Vale decided uncertain loyalties. Armed with the location of the loyalist mustering point, Lord Danial took ship southwards, then marched his forces through the night and fell upon the Castle. At first the royalists assummed that Frederick's kin had arrived to join them, opening the gates and riding out to meet them. They were soon corrected. Alf led the Guard through the open gates to sieze the leaders, while Lord Danial cut down the unprepared soldiers camping outside the walls. It... wasn't a battle. It was a massacre. It wasn't only soldiers who had to die for the trap to be successful, old men and babes, the people of the castle and the village, anyone who could tell the tale had to be taken or killed. And they were.
The next day Sir Justin arrived from Coldwater. The day after that Lord Cracken. Then old Lord Debbin. After that the royalists learned that Canden was no longer theirs, but while his house's honour had been stained no-one could doubt where Lord Danial's loyalites lay.
When it became clear that their trap had been discovered, Lord Danial began the march south to join his forces to Lord Arryn's, sending the captured royalist nobles back to Harrenhold as prisoners. What was left of the smallfolk of Canden were released, to eek out a living as best they could.
Alf and his father fought with Lord Arryn for the rest of the war, marching on Gulltown, with Alf taking command of the scouts for Lord Arryn's forces. The Haronhold Guard distinguished themselves in the Battle of the Bells, and so were assigned the pride of place in the vanguard of the Vale's flank in the Battle of the Trident. When the Dornish cavalry charged in an effort to break the flank and rout the army, Lord Danial's company met them, holding the line as they charged again and again, growing ever more desperate. Archers pelted the company whenever the cavalry withdrew, infantry fought through their flanking units and almost surrounded them – but before they were overwhelmed the guard had weakened the force sufficiently that the counter-attack broke the Dornish forces morale.
By the time the battle was over Lord Danial had been slain, along with his Personal Guard defending him to the last. As a consequences of his and Alf's good service to Lord Arryn and the ransoms of the prisoners taken at Canden, House Haron's standing is now much the same as it was before the scandal but at great cost.
Ser Justin Heron
Spoiler
Name: Ser Justin Heron
Position: Heir of House Heron, Knight of Heronhold
Status: 3
Age: Young Adult (14-18) 15
EXP: 0 (160)
Destiny Points: 2 (5)
Drawback:
Benefits: Cohort, Heir, Lucky
Specialities XP: 60
Character: The son of Lord Danials younger brother, who was killed in a battle with mountain clansmen when Justin was a babe, he was raised mostly at Coldwater as a ward of the Coldwaters. He very strongly believes in the knightly virtues, to the point of nativity and foolishness in some situations, but is always chivalrous and fair in his dealings. If he happens to be a little cocksure, well, is it arrogance if you really are that good?
Unlike most Herons Justin is an excellent rider and jouster, although on foot due to his age his performance is sub-par. To make up for his lack of reach he prefers to use spears.
(Poor Justin. At least Eddard knew what he was getting himself into to a point.)
Character: Inspired by Tyrion Stokeworth, basically I found the concept of the conflicting taboos of kinslaying, bastardry and rape-child an interesting starting point for building a character. [I dropped the Status 1] To my mind Justin would have, in his naivity, been the only real friend he had at Coldwater so when Justin returns to Heronhold after the war he chooses to go with him. He nominally joined the scouts, but for the most part serves as Justin's bodyguard and right hand man. Character arc would be gaining status in the eyes of the household, and developing a sense of self esteem.
Castellan: Ser Brackon Heron, the only son of Lord Alfred's grandfather's middle brother. A great bear of a man raised to serve the main line of House Heron, he goes about his duties with a dutiful dedication that has earned him the respect of those he serves and those who serve him. He can be a little unimaginative at times, though...
With Justin's parents deaths Ser Brackon took on the boy and has something of a surrogate paternal relationship with Justin.
Steward: Formerly this post was filled by Maester Daemon, but his health was failing him when House Heron marched to war and with his death the de-facto steward is currently Caroline, who normally runs the kitchens.
Caroline: The head cook who runs the kitchens, a very pragmatic woman capable of killing, slaughtering, and cooking anything put in front of her. Unsentimental doesn't do her justice, if the seven themselves appeared before her she'd ask them to wait with their business until she was done with supper.
Master-At-Arms: Master Staffen lost an arm and an eye in the War of Ninepenny Kings, but his remaining eye is as sharp as ever for any mistakes his pupils might make. A former member of the Herron Guard he has extensive experience with all manners of weaponry he's more than happy to pass on. What he lacks in ability to demonstrate is more than compensated by the other veterans inhabiting Heronhold and his uncanny ability to explain the problem to his students.
Captain Caffen: Commander of House Heron's Anvil Company Caffen is a walking cliche - a drillmaster without peer. The biggest surprise to people who meet him is how much his soldiers love him. While he works his soldiers to the bone in peace, many of those who have served under his command in the field owe their lives to his regime.
Master of Horse: Turlow is... not exactly simple, per se, but not the sharpest tool in the shed either. He took a blow to the head fighting clansmen in one of Lord Arryn's purges years back and he's been a little vague ever since. As long as the headaches don't bother him though, he's competent enough at making sure the garrons, mules, and the odd 'real' horse get what they need.
Master of the Hunt: Captain Sewick [of the Scouts] serves in this poist, as tracking and hunting prey whether man or beast serves to develop the skills required of his company. Given broad discretion to make use of what there is of House Heron's realm, and the surrounding unclaimed hinterland, to give experience to his men Captain Sewick takes the post of Master of the Hunt to add to his titles. However House Heron has little interest in such activities, so the associated responsibilities take up little of his time unless a noble with a greater taste for the hunt is a guest for a time.
Kennel Master: Valary, Caroline and Staffen's daughter, fills this role, taking after her father in many ways but in manner is more her mother's daughter. Her hounds are trained to track smuggled goods, escaping clansmen, and to help make up for the lack of soldiery to keep watch on Heronhold's walls in times of war.
Blacksmith: Jacob originally served his father as an apprentice in King's Landing, but following a tragic accident while working through the night to meet an urgent order was left orphaned and without enough coin to afford an apprenticeship fee. Due to word of his previous good work, however, he was able to get a position as an assistant to an unskilled smith. The conditions were poor, his pay worse, but he was able to do what he loved. Eventually word reached the ears of Lord Danial of a talented lad all but carrying his master in business, and he stopped by to see his work. As Heronhold's then master smith was ailing and his previous apprentices lacked the man's talents, Lord Danial paid Jacob's master off and offered Jacob an apprenticeship at Heronhold.
Since then Jacob has served House Heron admirably producing arms and armour for the use of the household, or for use as diplomatic gifts. His perfectionism is a double-edged sword in this regard, however, as he is all but incapable of rushing his work to produce anything less than the best he is capable of.

Founded late tarwell rose quicly throughout a strong thought of that no matter how small everybody is still apart of the realm- even the mightiest fortress is made of small stones. They as created by Ludwig- a wealthy peasant under a very abusive lord he raised the smallfolks in a big revolt against their lord and he as soon overthrown by sheer might in numbers. They raised quickly from a little hamlet to a small village with a pretty large area around. Some of the lords especially from the north seems to think that they don’t have any honor but they strongly disagrees- for them a lord that will risk the safety of his entire kingdom to prove is own valour is the unhonorable and the one that is willing to bend his knee for the good of his people are the honourable. and through this thought they have become a pretty big country- it is amazing ho much more the people will givee when they know they are being respected. it is much easier to work hard starwing hen you know that your lord does the same- sometimes their lords have been knon to work and eat with the common people when it was no more pressing need. they did not however support robert out of sheer patriotism however they were supporting Robert because of the dangers a mad king could do to the country. They are not going to objekt that they gained a lot of wealth but unfortunately many of their fortresses got burned and the only thing left of their army is two small peasant levies newly raised.
Their old lord, lord-old tam “ friendly giant” Tarwell, standing almost 7 feet tall but still not a drop of bad blood in his veins. His main goal was to increase the standards for the people whom he ruled over by buying lands when it as cheap so that they could get enough food and save the corn to when it was hard to come by. His son gendralf seems to have the same goal in mind. And he just made two houses on the way down in ruin his levies- one suffered from an insane leader, he was known for eating his meals with the pigs and was known to kill anyone that did not deny the existence of pies. Even though his son seems a little bit off that may just be some bad memories from his youth. The other as simply drawn into debt from the iron bank from an insane investment. And one does not simply refuse to pay debts from the iron bank.

They used to have big influence with the targayens but that was slowly reducing after many conflicts about everything the last one when Horace, their leader, refused to come and aid the battle as one of the pigs was giving birth- he was very close to his pigs he was even known for eating his meals with the pigs and was known to kill anyone that did not deny the existence of pies. Even though the people prays that his son will be a better leader, horaces son seems a little bit off. That may just be some trauma from his youth but it is worth a moments thought.

Even though they supported Robert in his war they lost most of their army against the mad king so even though they were on the victorious side they had lost. Then they decided to bend their knee to the Tarwells to seek protection from a bigger house. their leader got a big beer gut and the only thing better than battle for him is the victory feast after. Even if he is ay past his prime age he is still passable with a sword.

House History
Spoiler
House Ciel started from humble roots shortly after King Aegon's conquest during a period of peace and prosperity. The founders of the House braved the harsh and dangerous conditions of some of the most treacherous and secluded mountains of the Vale were they began as the most prominent family of a small mining community.
As the community continued to expand, digging through the mountains, they caught the eyes of the Mountain Clans of the Vale, were a powerful Chieftain decided to raid the small village in order to pillage it and the weapons that they were constructing. Though sorely outnumbered, it was at that point that House Ciel became known in the Vale when in a desperate attempt to save their village, a simple smith called Fendrel Ciel rallied the villagers with what would become House Ciel's Motto "Upon This Rock." and not only scored an improbable victory over the Wild-men, but also went as far as sallying forth from their village and massacring their enemies, to the point that the entire Mountain Clan was destroyed.
As a result of this victory, the Lord of the Vale gave Fendrel Ciel Lordship over the small village, and the Lord Fendrel, swearing fealty to House Arryn. Thus began the Military tradition of House Ciel of protecting and providing security to the Mountains by going against bandits, Mountain Clans and renegade houses. House Ciel soon began responding to the Mountain Clan's savagery with even greater ferocity and by administering their harsh justice, becoming more militant with each passing generation, with their soldiers being trained harder with each passing Lord.
80 years after the founding of the House, Lord Guy Ciel, taking advantage of yet another long spell of peace and prosperity, Lord Guy realized that his small village was open and prone to attacks. Therefore he decided that they would need to relocate. Finding a tall mountain known as "The Steep End" with a sheer cliff, running all the way into the Bite, and with an underground river providing the water they would need, the miners of House Ciel began carving the castle. When it was completed after 20 years of grueling hard work, Lord Guy mentioned how the mountain itself had yielded to the might of House Ciel, and since it was given the name "Castle Defer."
Taking up residence in Castle Defer, the Ciels used their seat in order to expand their influence. As a tradition, every male member of House Ciel and those who serve them would make up patrols against the dangers which polluted the land upon hitting puberty. As the lands of the Steep End are inhospitable, and due to the militaristic traditions imposed upon by the Ciels, the population who reside within Castle Defer are few, making up mostly of the soldiers, then miners and smiths. The women, while mostly left at the castle to do the chores, are also known to help with the mining and from time to time even help to smith weapons. Due to the lack of population in Castle Defer, and as there are no surrounding villages, everyone is expected to pull their weight.
It was under the infamous reign of the insane Lord Gavin, 50 years after the Ciels took the Steep End as their seat, when paranoid that the other Lords of the Vale were going to undermine his power, in a fit of insanity came to the conclusion after hearing various whispers that were planted in hie ear that the Mountain Clans were going to bend the knee to the Arryn and accept the rule of the Iron Throne. Enraged, Lord Gavin decided that the best way to deal with this plot, would be to exterminate the savages once and for all. Thus Lord Gavin began feverishly preparing the Steep End for his extermination campaign, and launched his bloody campaign. It was short, but brutal and bloody. While the Mountain Clans were weakened, it came at the cost of Lord Gavin's and a significant amount of House Ciel's forces. Hence following Lord Gavin's insanity, it became an unwritten tradition that the troops of the Steep End as a whole would never march out again.
In the years leading to King Aerys II Targaryen, House Ciel continued to expand, Lord Gavin's folly was costly, but the Ciels knew how to overcome obstacles. However it was during the time of the current Lord's grandfather, Lord Bryce that to the Ciel's horror, they realized that the mines, the life and blood of the Steep End had been depleted, and all attempts to find new veins failed miserably, leading to the abandoning of the mines, which can to this day still be found littering the mountains. In desperation, Lord Bryce began to look for temporary ways to obtain the iron that Castle Defer needed, and even took the desperate measure of building a road in order to facilitate trade, something which had shocked the Ciels at that time, as they figured that it could give the enemy an easier access to their seat of power.
A great opportunity came when Lord Byrce's successor, Lord Borin was called by the by the Throne to assist the Kingsguard in dealing with the Kingswood Brotherhood, the Throne having heard of House Ciel's exploits, in return promising them a monthly supply of Iron which House Ciel so desperately needed. In an act not seen since the time of Lord Gavin's Folley, the Ciel troops marched out as one, leaving the defense of Castle Defer to the women, children and elderly, as the Ciels answered the Iron Throne's call.
Following their role in bringing the Kingswood Brotherhood down, King Aerys honored House Ciel, by expanding their lands within the Vale, and in return send some of House Ciel men to join the Gold Cloaks as Master in Arms and train the new recruits, thus resulting in House Ciel becoming close to the Targaryens.
Because of House Ciel's role within King's Landing, when Lord Jon Arryn raised his banners in defiance against King Aerys, at first it was uncertain whether House Ciel would answer Lord Arryn's call. In fact, it was half expected that due to their dependance on the iron that the Targaryens supplied them, the Ciels would stand with the Iron Throne, and prove to be a thorn in Jon Arryn's side.
Yet, while Lord Borin would have sided with the Targaryens, when Jon Arryn called his banners, it was Lord Merek Ciel, Borin's son and current Lord of the Steep End who was seated in Castle Defer, Lord Borin having died of a sudden illness 7 years prior to Robert's Rebellion. As Lord Merek had been raised as a child in the Eyrie in the company of Robert Baratheon, Lord Merek answered his Liege's call, and gave his support to Robert's Rebellion.
Thus once again, the Ciels marched off but this time to war. Following Robert's Rebellion from the start Lord Merek personally lead his forces, though few through the Battle of the Bells, at the Trident, and finally assisted Stannis Baratheon in taking Dragonstone, by sending End's Fleet in the attack. As a result of their deeds on the battlefield, the newly crowned King Robert with Lord Arryn as his Hand also gave favor as well to House Ciel, promising to keep the iron flowing on a monthly quota and allowing them to continue training the Gold Cloaks in return for more land in the Vale.

Character Background:
Spoiler
Merek Ciel was the first born son, yet the third child of Lady Alys and Lord Borin of the Steep End. The honor of the first born and even second born went to his two twin elder sisters, Maerwynn & Muriel. Yet because of their gender, it was Merek who received the title of Heir of the Steep End.
In accordance to traditions, all children, including the noble born are sent to help in the mines. Yet as the mines were all but depleted, Merek was sent with expeditions in order to find new ore veins. It was during one of these expeditions that Merek witnessed the Mountain Clan's savagery during one of their attacks, and following that incident, he became enamored with the stories of his ancestor Lord Gavin, to the point that he resolved to become the most renown swordsman in these lands so that he can personally complete Lord Gavin's Ciel's dream.
Therefore, committing himself to his training, Merek's father brought the best Masters-at-arms to train him, and indeed it turned out that he was a natural sword fighter. At the age of 8, Merek was sent to the Eyrie by request of Jon Arryn to help train young Robert Baratheon, whose friendship he gained.
Upon the death of Merek's father, at the age of 14, he returned to Steep End, finding out that his father had arranged for his wedding with Lady Malkyn Frey, daughter of Lord Walder of the Twins, as part of an agreement in order to secure even more iron for Steep End. Despite the fact that this arrangement was below the Ciel's station, Merek saw it as his duty to accept this wedding, and lost no time at taking his new wife, and making as many children as possible.
With the birth of his first born son, Merek was pleased, and wishing for more sons went once again with his wife. However to his disappointment, their second child was a daughter. Not being one to give up, Merek tried again and when a second daughter was born was so furious that he threatened his wife, blaming her for the failure to produce children and giving her one last chance to produce a son. Upon the birth of his third daughter, Merek was so furious that his brothers had to hold him back, as he almost strangled his own daughter with her umbilical cord.
Still fuming at his wife, blaming the weakness of the Frey, Merek went off and went to one of the few pleasure houses within Castle Defer, making no attempt to even hide what he was about to do. Merek just stormed into the first whorehouse he found, and took the first whore that crossed his path. When the prostitute gave birth to twin boys, Merek's anger finally subsided, and he immediatly recognized the twins as his own children, sparing them of having to take the title of "Stone." When the Frey complained about this, in response Merek reminded them that the heir still had Frey blood, but in a cruel jape at his father-in-law, Merek named one of the twins, Walder and the other one Edwyn. That way the Frey did not have to worry about their legacy at the Steep End.
Between the time that Merek became Lord of Castle Defer, he continued his family's tradition of hunting the Mountain Clans. Lord Merek was not a merciful man, anyone caught breaking the law was punished swiftly. The few prisoners that the Ciel took were executed by Merek himself. After being inspired by the Old Ways in the North, Merek would execute prisoners in order to test the quality of new weapons, women and children included. Any Mountain Clan baby found on the other hand, were simply thrown from the walls of Castle Defer, as were any baby found born with any deficiencies.
When Jon Arryn raised his banners against the Iron Throne, Merek was at a loss on what to do. He needed the iron supply that the Targaryens were supplying to the Steep End, and it seemed that the Frey were not moving at all. Despite his Lady Mother's insistence, Merek decided that he would answer Jon Arryn's call and stand by his friend Robert. A huge part had to do that Merek considered that he would gain more renown for fighting against the Dragons rather than the Stags.
Thus, Merek took his small army, and followed Robert Baratheon during his rebellion. Because of the small size of the Ciel army, Merek had to follow the larger host, but what he lacked in size, the Ciels made up in ferocity, true to their nature showed little to no mercy.
Now with Robert on the Iron Throne, Merek secured the the monthly supply of iron for his services during the Rebellion and the glory he had sought out, Merek has returned to Castle Defer, must now focus on his plans, and to find new mines, allowing for House Ciel to expand even more.
Lady Malkyn (Frey) Ciel
Spoiler
Age:32
Status: 5 (Lady of the Steep End)
Background:Was Kidnapped and rescued.
Goal: Knowledge
Motivation: Love
Virtues: Honest
Vice: Prejudiced
Lady Malkyn was born as the daughter of Lord Walder Frey of the Crossing and his third wife. Being one of Lord Walder's many children from an early age, Malkyn committed herself to the many skills that were taught to all girls. In particular, the History and the Legends from the Ages of Heroes always fascinated her, as many times she romanticized that she was one of the Maidens of Lore who were swept away by her knight in shining armor.
She got more than what she had bargained for, when her father announced that after difficult negotiations with Lord Borin of the Steep End, that she was to marry Merek Ciel, the Heir of Castle Defer. She had just celebrated her 16th Name-day, while Merek had seen his 13th.
Malkyn had heard about the militant reputation of the Ciels, and how the Steep End was isolated, harsh and unforgiving and even though this betrothal was better than any other arrangement Malkyn or the Freys could have hoped for, she dreaded the idea of living the rest of her life at Castle Defer. Yet her father was anxious to seal the deal, and made arrangements for the wedding ceremony to be made as soon as possible. It was agreed with Lady Alys Ciel that Malkyn would be sent to Castle Defer prior to the wedding, in order to allow the young maiden some time to get used to what would be her new home.
The road to the Steep End was long, and tiring, but little did the Freys who were escorting Malkyn to Castle Defer ever expect that they would get ambushed by the Mountain Clans, let alone get overwhelmed and captured. Having killed a large part of the Frey retinue who were escorting Malkyn's litter, the Mountain men took her hostage, and upon finding out who she was, demanded ransom from her father.
Malkyn believed herself as good as dead, or worse, she feared of what these savages would do to a maiden of noble birth such as herself. The weeks passed and no news were heard from her father, as to whether he was going to pay the ransom. While in captivity, Malkyn was left half-starving, while the chieftain kept threatening to slit her throat and wear her skin as a cloak. A few weeks after she was kidnapped during one night, as Malkyn slept tied up in her tent, she awakened to the cry of "Upon This Rock!"
From within her tent, Malkyn could hear the sound of yelling, screaming and metal clanging against metal. All of a sudden to her horror, Malkyn realized heard the Cheiftain's voice yelling outside her tent, and knew that her throat was as good as slit as she saw the flap to her tent being opened, and closed her eyes shut as she waited for her end. Sensing a presence staring at her, Malkyn risked opening her eyes, and at that moment she felt as if she was in a dream, for standing in front of her, was her young husband-to-be, head shaved clean, and a slight red stubble which was to be his beard as was tradition reserved only for the Lord and Heir or the Steep End, and drenched in blood and gore, here to rescue his future wife.
Now the reasons why Merek saved Malkyn from her tormentors is debatable at Castle Defer. Some say that it was Merek's sense of duty to his future wife that caused him to volunteer to be in the attack straight after he returned from the Eyrie. Others say that Merek refused to suffer such a personal insult. Regardless from that moment, Malkyn fell in love with Merek, and to this day romanticizes the events leading to her rescue, even omitting the part where Merek slumped her over his shoulders, still tied, like a sack of potatoes, and took her to safety.
Following her rescue, and her marriage into House Frey, Malkyn decided that she would do everything she could in order to support her new House. She did that by providing her husband with their first child and heir, and as Merek was happy so was she. Furthermore, Malkyn took advantage of her husband's good mood in order to convince him to begin investing in expanding the Houses' knowledge, and began slowly bringing what ever books they could get their hands on and afford, from across Westeros. Malkyn took it upon herself to teach the Household members of the Ciel what she knew, she began looking to bring in a Maester who could help her with her goal.
As the years passed, and Malkyn became the Lady of the Steep End, she continued to give birth to children, but to Merek's disappointment she kept giving him girls. With the events surrounding the birth of their third daughter, and the birth of the Bastard Twins, it was the first time that Malkyn saw first hand her husband's furious temper. At first, she held it against Merek and for the insult he had sent to her father. Yet as the years passed, and Merek made it clear that he wished for her son to inherit his title, and that the twins were to serve him, she found that she was unable to hate her husband, though she has far from forgiven him, she also developed a hatred for bastard borns as a result.
When John Arryn defied the Mad King and called his Banners, Malkyn knew that Castle Defer was in a difficult position, the Lord of the Vale being House Ciel's Liege, yet requiring the iron that the Iron Throne provided them on a monthly basis. Yet her biggest surprise was the night after Merek's war council, when he wearily went into bed and asked her for her advise. It turned out that most of Merek's council were insisting that this rebellion would prove to be disastrous, and that House Ciel had more to gain by remaining loyal to the Targeryans and becoming a thorn in John Arryn's side. Yet Merek knew Robert Baratheon well, and since its founding, House Ciel always answered to the Arryns.
No one knows what Malkyn whispered into her husband's ear that night... or whether Merek took her advise or spurned her. However, early in the morning, Merek awoke his Hammers and his soldiers, raising House Ciel's Banner in response to Jon Arryn's call. They say that as Lord Merek and his troops marched out, Lady Malkyn could be seen at the ramparts watching her husband go off to battle, smiling in pure satisfaction.

Gyles Ciel was born as the fourth child and second son of Lord Borin Ciel of the Steep End, with an age difference of four years with his older brother and heir of Castle Defer. In accordance to tradition, as a child Gyles was sent to the mines to help toughen him up, and began to train, for one day he would serve his brother Merek as one of his Hammers.
While Gyles unlike his brother never felt comfortable wielding a sword, he did not protest when his father announced that he after reaching an agreement with King Aerys II, Glyes was to go to King's Landing and squire for one of the members of the Kingsguard. Taking this as a chance to experience the world beyond the Steep End, Gyles went to King's Landing and was amazed at how busy and populated it was, especially in comparison to Castle Defer.
During his time as a Squire in the Red Keep, Gyles did his best to honor his family, yet he was always drawn to the common folk, often preferring to stay in the kitchen and bother the serving girls, or gambling with the members of the City Watch in their barracks, while often shying away from social gatherings for the nobility.
Several years later, after finally earning his spurs and making his vows in the Great Sept of Baelor, he unwillingly returned to the Steep End as Ser Gyles, and entered into his father's service as a Hammer. Lord Borin, noticing Ser Gyles natural charisma and way with inspiring people, hoped to one day make him Castellan of Castle Defer. However with Lord Borin's death, and with Merek becoming the Lord of the Steep End, Ser Gyles' relationship with his Lord brother was strained at best. Though he had sworn to protect and council him, their views were very different to the point that they would often exchange heated arguments.
Never was the difference between both brothers so obvious as to when Jon Arryn called his banners in defiance to King Aerys. Ser Gyles argued passionately during Lord Merek's War Council that though Jon Arryn was House Ciel's Liege, their true loyalty lied to the Targeryans and the Iron Throne, and responding to Arryn's call would amount to high treason. Though Ser Gyles' argument won over most of Lord Merek's council, it was to his great disappointment that the next day he announced that House Ciel's Banner would respond to the call of the Lord of the Vale.
Despite Ser Gyles' grief of his brother's decision, he had no choice but to take part in Robert's Rebellion. During the Battle of the Trident, while Lord Merek was drunk with slaughter, Ser Gyles saw that House Ciel's soldiers were hard pressed, by a Dornish contingency, and bravely charged in with the Sons of the Hammers. It was then to his horror that he realized that leading the Dornish, was an old friend of his who was also a squire during Ser Gyles' time at King's Landing.
Torn, but honor bound to serve his Lord, Ser Gyles drew his sword against his old friend as they engaged in personal combat. Eventually Ser Gyles was able to seriously wound his enemy, and though Lord Merek had given orders that no quarter was to be given, Ser Gyles couldn't bare to watch his wounded friend die slowly on the battlefield, instead picking him up and carrying him to safety where he tended to his friends wounds.
Unfortunately, Lord Merek saw the incident, and furious that his brother had disobeyed his order, that very night accused him of being a turncoat and being a Targeryan sympathizer. Despite Ser Gyles' protests of innocence, Lord Merek would hear none of it, instead giving him a choice, to either face execution, or take the Black. Ser Gyles decided that he would travel to the Wall.
Therefore the day following the Battle of the Trident, Ser Gyles began making his way to the North alone. But the road was treacherous and dangerous as he soon found out when he encountered bandits harassing a group of Begging Brothers. Though he could have walked away instead he drew his sword and charged in, determined to take as many of the bandits as he could. Whether brave or foolish, Ser Gyles was able to drive the bandits off, wounding himself almost to the point of death in the process. To his good fortune, the grateful Begging Brothers tended his wounds, and in the meanwhile began preaching to him about the Faith of the Seven, as he began to escort them in their travels.
It was during these travels that Ser Gyles felt that perhaps he had a higher purpose than what he had originally imagined. He felt that if the Seven had deemed him worthy to keep his life, then he in return should use his life to offer proper worship. And so renouncing his title and all claims and rights, Gyles Ciel swore his faith to the Seven became an acolyte and joined the Begging Brothers, going from city to city and using his natural charisma to preach to the commoners about the Faith and how they could save their souls.

From her earliest memories, Ysmay Sand can say that she was on one ship or another, sailing the seas and calling at strange ports. Yet the one thing she cannot remember are her parents. Of what little she information she could gather, she was a bastard born daughter of some Dornish merchant and a prostitute who couldn't afford to raise a child. Although Ysmay was unable to remember the details surrounding how and when she was placed on her first ship, the sea has always been her life.
As a little girl Ysmay could say that she saw many wonderous sites that most would never see in their entire lives. She has run up and down the coasts of Westeros and has gone as far as the Free Cities, whether in merchant ships or under the cover of darkness with smugglers. When ever she would be on shore, Ysmay would love to visit the docks, were she learned how to be quick, both psychically and mentally.
She learned from an early age how to pickpocket by first targeting drunkards outside the tavern, after all, she dreamed to one day captain her own ship one way or another. As she grew up, she soon learned that as a female and an attractive one, she could use her looks to get poor unfortunate saps into her bed before robbing them blind.
It was that way that she managed to become the Captain of her own ship... first by joining the crew, then bedding the Captain and then leading a mutiny against him. Thus renaming her ship "Maiden's Lust" for as Captain she was known to reward men and women who pleased her personally, Ysmay began her career as a smuggler, evading the law and bringing her goods across the shores of Westeros.
It was during one of those runs when a strong storm forced Ysmay and the Maiden's Lust to seek shelter in the Bite, as they waited for the storm to die out. After spending a few days anchored, Ysmay decided that the weather was safe enough to sail, and as they began to pick up on their journey, the cry went out that some flotsam had been spotted, most likely as a result of the recent storm. Not one to pass such an opportunity, Ysmar decided to investigate and see if there was anything worth salvaging.
To her great surprise, she found a bald man with a bushy beard, holding onto a barrel half dead. As the smugglers pulled the man up, Ysmay was delighted to see that the man was in fact wearing a nobleman's garb with the emblem of House Ciel on it. Thinking of the ransom she could collect or at the very least a reward, Ysmay gave orders to place the man in a cabin and help him regain his strength.
Three days later, Ysmay was informed that the man had awakened and was already standing and demanding to see her. Upon confronting him, he revealed that he was Lord Merek of the Steep End, and that he was returning from a voyage with End's Fleet when the storm caught them by surprise and he was swept overboard. The man also demanded that he was returned to Castle Defer.
Not missing a beat, Ysmay had lots of wine brought for the both of them, and gave strict orders that no one was to disturb them as she was about to negotiate her reward for saving the Lord. No one really knows what happened behind that closed door, but word amongst the crew was that throughout the night different noises ranging from from shouting to, grunts, to giggling and even a bit of singing. What ever happened behind that door, the next morning Ysmay walked out, exhausted with the stench of alcohol on her breath to inform her crew that after extensive negotiations, they were setting destination to Newport at the Steep End, as she had managed to secure Newport as a permanent safe harbor, and Lord Merek's guarantee that the Maiden's Lust would not only enjoy the protection of the End's Fleet, but that he would turn a blind eye to any illegal operations that she would conduct in the area.
And so, Ysmay returned Lord Merek to Castle Defer, and Newport became a favored destination for Ysmay and the Maiden's Lust, to the point that she became familiar with the captains and crew of the End's Fleet. Naturally, every time the Maiden's Lust would call at Newport, Ysmay would pay the Lord of the Steep End a visit, and as tradition both would lock themselves in a room with lots of wine, and only emerge in the morning with weird noise coming from behind the closed door. Rumor around Castle Defer has it that Lord Merek and Captain Ysmay are having an illicit relationship. The fact that Lord Merek refuses to speak about what happens behind the closed doors, although he has denied the rumors only helps fuel them within the castle, while Ysmay herself rarely speaks of her own exploits.
As the years passed, and the Maiden's Lust continued to visit Newport, Ysmay found herself in the end working almost exclusively for Lord Merek. At first it was the odd smuggling job here and there, and eventually the Maiden's Lust began sailing with the End's Fleet delivering the iron promised to the Steep End. Ysmay figured that while it may have been honest work, it paid well at least... and of course it didn't mean that she couldn't do some side jobs when she had the time.
Naturally, with her knowledge of the seas, it wasn't long before she convinced Lord Merek after spending another night with him to give her command of the entire End's Fleet. Thus having sworn an oath to loyally serve House Ciel, for what a smuggler's oath can be worth, Captain Ysmay was named commander of End's Fleet.
Just reserving my posting spot. So far, I considering being a member of House Tarwells' First underhouse. It hasn't been named yet, so hopefully I get to name it. And then they have the blood of valaryia in them (He said half Targareyen. I'm going to say the other half is still blood of valaryia. Which is not weird. There are two other houses I know of, who came from the doom with the Targareyens.), so that's a neat little thing to roleplay. Especially if we all go to kings landing.
Now I need to decide on if I will make a female or male character. <_<;
It would be fun to be female and be destined to marry your brother... your touched brother.

Name: House Witherly
Motto: Our Vines Shall Reach
Heraldry: A vertically divided field with a green field and a black, gloved hand on the left side, and a black field with a green wreath of vines on the right
Founding: Age of Heroes
History:
Spoiler
You want to hear about who? Are you certain I could not interest you in another story? Perhaps Lann the Clever, or the Rise and Fall of the Targaryens? No, I suppose you would have already heard those. Very well, if you insist, but it isn't terribly interesting.
Back in the days of heroes and myth, there was a man named Garth Greenhand, the first King of the Reach, whose reign was so good and just that it caused the very land he ruled to swell with the bounty of the earth, or however the legend goes. Of course, as bright and well read as you are, you already know this story well I am sure. What is less known, however, is Greenhand's antithesis; a lesser lord whose footsteps wilted the flowers underneath, and whose touch could rot even the stoutest tree. The only thing that grew where he had been were thick, gnarled vines covered in black thorns, which coated the ground of his holdings. How he came to possess what land he had is unknown, though there are some who theorize that he had a connection to the Green King himself. Some say he was his brother, others say one of his many sons, and still others think he was merely a deranged bandit king who had managed to eek out a parcel of land through simple brutality, these were the less complicated times of the First Men after all.
Whatever the case, the Wither Lord, as he came to be known, ruled over his land with an iron fist and a mad eye towards the sprawling plains in the horizon, dreaming of covering it all in his foul corruption. Obviously the King of the Reach could have none of that, and imprisoned the lord in a tower by the sea. Even there, however, his vines continued to grow, climbing up the stone pillar towards their master until it was completely covered in thorns.
Eventually the Wither Lord perished in that tower, his influence beginning to wane only after his last breath. Even then, the thorns surrounding his prison and tomb refused to budge, and eventually turned to eternal stone, which can still be seen on that tower to this day. Between you and me, the thorns could just as easily be the work of a talented stone carver as some unholy witch-king, but I digress. In any case, his descendants continued to rule his hold, now under the name Witherly in remembrance of their founder, and his influence slowly left the land, leaving it free of vines and thorns once more.
This went on for many years, through the invasion of the Andals, until eventually a new Lord Witherly, Radach, took up the title, one who shared his ancestors madness, and even his vision, albeit in a much more constructive manner. You see, while the land had long been cured of the blight laid on it by the Wither Lord, it had still never been able to quite live up to the expectations of the rest of the Reach, much of the hold remaining sparsely covered by weeds, and the farms that did exist being rather lackluster. Radach Witherly knew this would not do, for in his dreams he saw the land covered in vines, as it had in days of old, only this time the vines were green, thick, and covered in succulent grapes, rather than thorns. He worked his entire life towards this goal, and pushed his subjects rather hard to achieve it, which of course caused some dissention, but eventually his dream, and the land itself, bore fruit. In commemoration, Radach had a new tower built right alongside his predecessors. Sadly, he did not live to see it finished, but it too still stands today, and in stark contrast to its sibling, the groundskeepers always keep strong, healthy vines growing up the wooden meshwork lining the tower. It is even said that the famed vineyards of the Arbor originated from the first vines planted by Radach, but that is likely baseless posturing.
And so the house continued on with a fair degree of prominence through the ages, staying quiet for centuries and always taking the safe road in every major conflict. There was a rather long period where the house was well known for producing excellent jousters, however they have not put forth a tournament winner for several generations now, and that reputation has left the minds of most men by this point.
The family grew wealthy over the years, but also complacent and decadent. Eventually, near the start of the Mad King's reign, the lord of the house, Garth Witherly, decided that his rule of unfathomable mediocrity deserved a place in the annals of history, and so he set about building a new, grand tower alongside his ancestors'. So impatient and proud was he, in fact, that he and his family set about living inside the tower before the structure was even finished. When Robert began his rebellion, Lord Witherly officially sided with the rest of the reach against him, but was rather unsubtle about his denouncement of the Targaryens. He sent very few troops against the Baratheons, while loudly plotting against his Lord, Hightower.
Meanwhile, Emond Witherly worried for the state of his house. He was the head of a cadet branch of the family, first cousin to Garth, and a man known for his dashing handsomeness, endearing wit, and a penchant for sarcasm. He found himself concerned about his Lord's brazen attitude towards the war even while Targaryen sympathizers lay all around him. It was then that Emond gathered up the few men at his command and the resources at his disposal from his own meager holdings and rose up in rebellion against his cousins. The rebellion did not last long, as the first and last battle of the conflict involved Emond's forces toppling the unfinished tower in the dead of night, as Garth and all his household slept, killing all of them in one fell swoop and leaving Emond as the closest living relative and heir to their estate.
Next? Well there is not much more to tell. Emond took the title of Lord Witherly and consolidated his holdings into one. He will be called Kinslayer for the rest of his days, an outcome he fully expected and accepted before taking his chosen course. He also bent the knee to Robert once his war proved successful, and he and his house lived happily ever after. There, now did I not tell you that was a dull story? Everything worked out oh so nicely and neatly for the Witherlys; very little drama at all, really. I would not put much stock into its more fantastical elements either, as facts from the past are always distorted by the mists of time.
Besides, tales like this are always subject to the bias of the teller.
More History:
Spoiler
The following is historical information concerning intermidiary lords of House Witherly:
Ser Reynold Witherly: Born the second son of Lord Aser Witherly, Ser Reynold followed the typical path of chivalry for an off born son of a lord of the Reach. While a fighter of some skill, his older brother and heir apparent, Emond, always surpassed him even as he was groomed for life at court rather than the field. However, a tournament held by King Viserys I proved to be a good week for Reynold, as he managed to best all comers at the joust, including his brother in an early round. Finally, only one challenger remained: Ser David Ancre, "The Iron Mammoth" of the Vale, a young man who had been building up a fearsome reputation very quickly, said to be indestructable and unstoppable when he put his mind to something.
Before the final round, however, was the Grand Melee, an event which both Reynold and Emond were to participate in, as well as the Mammoth. As soon as the melee started, Ser David pushed his way past the crowd, making his way as the raven flies towards Ser Reynold. Emond, attempting to keep his brother from the Mammoth's tusks, put himself between the two, and recieved an axe to his skull with barely a flinch from Ser David. Reynold attacked his brother's murderer with vigor, but ultimately succumbed to fatigue and was knocked to the ground by his massive opponent. David's axe came down purposefully on Reynold's right hand, neatly slicing it off, winning him not only the melee, but surely the joust as well.
However, Reynold, despite his injury, refused to resign and ordered his horse and lance nearly before his stump had even been wrapped. Mounting his steed, he had his shield strapped tightly to his bloodied arm, and held his lance in his off hand. Bravely he faced off against the Mammoth barreling down upon him. He raised his lance and braced himself...
...and of course was swiftly dismounted. The tournament was lost and his brother remained unavenged. However, even as Reynold slunk away back to Two Towers in defeat, numerous men of the sword came to him to pledge fealty to this man who had shown such courage in the face of defeat. Reynold retired from tournaments then, and eventually became Lord Reynold I when his father passed away. His reign was known for generations as a just and orderly one.
Ser Toris Flowers: Toris was born the third bastard son of Lord Leron Witherly. The boy was unrecognized by his father, and thus grew up a lowborn child. By this time, House Witherly was at the peak of their fame as a producer of famous Knights, and thus he grew up on tales of his father's House. It was only natural then that he would begin petitioning the various knights of the house for squirehood, where he was spurned each time. Eventually, after working many years under various jobs, he managed to save up enough money for arms and armour by his mid twenties, and set about the land as a sell sword.
It was a few years later that a grand tournament was announced, which Toris immediately entered, hoping to catch his father's attention. Against all odds, he managed to defeat all comers in the Grand Melee, even recieving a personal commendation from King Daeron II and, afterwards, recognition and a full knighthood from his father. Ser Toris Flowers went on to participate in many more tournaments, gaining much respect and influence for the house, proving the worth of even bastard born Witherlys.
Unfortunately, Ser Toris would also prove to be the last great knight of Two Towers, as none afterwards from house Witherly achieved any significant deeds or so much as placed in a single tournament from then until the present day.
Lord Emond was born the first child of Radolf Witherly, himself the second born son of Lord Loras Witherly, then head of the house. Radolf, upon his father's death, had been granted a small portion of the Witherly family holdings as his inheritence, while his older brother, Garlan, received his title and the majority of his lands. Radolf expanded his holdings greatly through trade and business, continuing with his family's tradition in the wine industry, but was under constant pressure from his brother on numerous financial matters, which were finally settled when Radolf agreed to have Emond raised by the main branch in return for being allowed to run his business unbothered.
Emond was raised under a very tight thumb through his youth and was allowed few freedoms. It was little wonder then that, when his father unexpectedly passed away and Emond found himself the inheritor of his business that the young teenager would drown himself in food, drink, and women. Still, he had been taught the ways of money well by his foster family and his father's business flourished even as Emond grew fat off his own vices.
Emond married at eighteen to a Redwyne girl, in a gesture of good faith between the competing wine-baron houses, who unfortunately perished a little over a year later giving birth to their son, whom Emond named after his foster father, Garlan. Emond has yet to remarry, but has had numerous bastard children, one having been born two years before his marriage, and the other twenty-seven in the nine years that followed to various whores and mistresses. Oddly, Emond took in every single one into his home, raising them alongside his legitimate child. He affectionately refers to his twenty-eight Flowers collectively as his "Bouquet".
He did not know his younger brother, Daemon, until he took over his father's holdings, and even after kept somewhat distant from him, having little time to spend between running his business and indulging himself. However, he was kind to his brother when he had the chance, and when Robert's Rebellion hit, it was Daemon who first brought up the idea of the attack on their cousin's tower. Emond ultimately agreed with the decision, and secured the loyalty of Witherly's banner houses, one through honestly and the other through deceit. The attack was of course successful, putting Emond at the head of House Witherly, and though he rededicated Witherly and its banners to the Targaryan cause, he willingly bent the knee along with the rest of the Reach upon the sacking of King's Landing.

House History:
Spoiler
Harlan Larrack was a member of the previous lord Manderly's father, and when the North went to war against the Targaryen King, Lord Manderly was one of Lord Stark's utmost supporters.
At the battle of the Trident blood ran everywhere, and the fighting was brutal for both armies. Lord Manderly himself led his bannerman into the the fighting against the men of House Darry and House Ryger, the traitor riverlords. Outnumbered and yet recklessly pushing forwards, much of Manderly's strength was broken yet he continued foolishly. His personal guard fell one by one until only Harlan remained. He rode stoicly by his lords side always into the thickest fighting.
Eventually Manderly's attack had to fail, and he was struck down by Lord Ryger's young son. Harlan stepped forward and skewered the lordling without a thought, his blade calving through the boy's head before he could celebrate his victory. It is said that in battle one discovers his true self, and there Larrack forged himself a legend. He stood over his fallen lord and held together the broken elements of Manderly's forces. Ryger fell back when he learned of his son's death, and Larrack held off the Darry's final push long enough for Robert to slay Rhaegar and ostensibly win the battle with one blow.
Manderly survived the battle long enough to return to the north and die in his godswood, bequeathing a Lordship and lands on Harlan Larrack for his valour. It was not such a selfless gift, as with so many dead, and crime rising (due to poverty and the limited presence of soldiers who'd remained in the north) Manderly needed more bannermen and small lords to hold his lands together and hold back lawlessness.
Harlan was only a soldier and struggled at first. Yet the qualities that he had honed as a soldier and sometime-leader of men stood him in good stead here and he rallied his men to him and salvaged control over Seafoam Hall and the surrounding town and coastline. He built up a small military presence, but with so many men dead in the Riverlands, there were too few to establish a military or to extend his reach much beyond the few leagues around Seafoam.
He had married a young girl, Marissa, daughter of the ailing craftsman, before his departure and had left her behind with his three young children, and upon his return she became Lady Larrack. She proved herself as much as he in those years, and together they managed to come out ahead of the other fledgling houses Manderly had created. As the others dwindled and were once more engulfed by the new Lord Manderly's swelling (politically and physically) they navigated the dangerous waters and managed to retain large swathes of land, which provided food for their people, even if much of it was lawless.
Harlan Larrack however fell ill only a few years later, and died but months ago. Lady Larrack now controls the Halls, though they have passed to her eldest son, a youth of 15 years (this can be changed if people want).
TL;DR- The last remaining personal guard of the previous Lord Manderly saves his lord during the battle of the Trident and is granted land (partly for heroism, and partly to police it due to the rising levels of banditry and lawlessness in the north). He proves capable, as does his wife, but dies before the year is out. His sons and daughter have been raised from commoners to lords and lady in waiting, and are set to inherit Seafoam Hall. His wife, Marissa Larrack, rules with tenacity and a steely will, despite her common origins.

Votes have been tallied, and I have carefully decided who fits what I am trying to do. The three houses we will have running around are House Ceil, House Heron, and House Witherly
Also, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

@MrStereo1- I would like to join House Heron, any ideas about the kind of characters you wanted? Any members of the family that need taking control of?

I'm not ejecting anyone, please make characters for the three houses! I would love to have you. It was a hard choice after the votes were cast, it was almost a full on tie.

*Does a very undignified dance*
If you don't mind me asking, and it doesn't reveal anything you'd rather we didn't know about the plot, what were your criteria?
Also, if another player wanted to play a member of House Heron would that mean I had to remove either Jorey or Joanna Stone?

At present the house consists of Alf (me), and the two infant bastards of his siblings, one by Robert Baratheon. Jorey, Robert's son, really can't be much older than he is without dooming suspension of disbelief, and I'd kind of like to keep the daughter of the (traitor, traitor, he drew first) brother Alf killed. Perhaps Tialait would allow them to be removed from the heir spot if you wanted to play a part of the house, or if not you could play as a very distant relative?
Honestly since I haven't finished tweaking the last year of my PC's life we could probably work something out for any character you want to play without any disruption. Between the war, losses in the war, a house tradition of recruiting talent and a change in leadership there's plenty of stretch.
If you want some ideas for inspiration? House Heron has an elite unit of scouts and infantry, a support unit with 5 healing tentatively positioned as medics, and a garrison. While I haven't discussed it with Tialait yet...
As I imagine it the scouts served as sharp observers, patrolmen in the mountains hunting clansmen raiders, watchmen for smuggling and just about anything requiring sharp senses and discretion.
The Infantry are good, excellent really, but the best of the best fought in the personal guard with the previous lord. (Maybe some survived and integrated with the infantry survivors?) Between the experience from the war, their equipment and the surviving personal guard the Infantry are almost as good as the personal guard but the line of tradition is tenuous at best.
The 'medics' are a mixture of healers trained by the previous Maester under Alf's mother who placed a great deal of value on medicine, and the women of the household past child bearing age. This started as a nod towards the low population, the house needs to make the best possible use of all available hands. (Of course the women of child bearing age are needed to make new hands, so catch 22 there.)
The garrison are in my head the infirm veterans of the infantry, personal guard and scouts, whether due to age or injury, and the young boys not grown enough to take to the field. The experience the older men pass on ensures that there's always a ready stream of talent entering the house's military when the boys grow old enough to join one of the house's forces, and that the unit performs better than a company composed of old men and boys would normally.
You could slide yourself into any of those units as an exceptional individual, either as commander or just because you're really, really, good at what they do. If not the PC spent the last year or so with Lord Arryn's army commanding the scouting forces and outriders, etc. Burning villages, torturing enemy spies, raiding civilian food supplies and so on hasn't been kind to his mental state. If you want to incorporate your backstory with Alf's your PC could have met him at some point in the war.
If you'd rather have something more colourful then House Heron does recruit talented retainers to train troops, provide good equipment, manage trade etc so just PM me or post your concept, age, and such and I'll expand on anything in the backstory that might be useful as ideas-fodder.
If you'd like suggestions for roles from a games-mechanics perspective? Alf's stats lean towards managing resources and commanding armies. I imagine due to the house's military standing in the event of any combat we'd have some strong NPCs available, although I'd have to ask Tialait about that to be sure. So the big gap could be intrigue talent, if that's the sort of game you would like to play. If not then that's really not a problem. A commander, a talented retainer, a friend from the war etc all add something to the story.

Hm, well that's lots of fodder. I do have three main ideas, which unfortunately don't seem to mesh with the background so far, but do fit the sggested roles (though really I don't mind about covering all bases etc, parties that are deficient inn one area just get to have more fun!)
So:
1) A Vale knight, pretty stereotypical, quite virtuous and staunch in support of Lord Arryn and Lord Heron, but without lands of his own. Maybe a master-at-arms?
2) A Lady of some variety who plays a role similar to Cersei or Sansa, of political agent, somewhere between the two (she isn't crazy and vicious, but she isn't staunch and unyielding). Probably would have some fighting abilities, even if only in a fencing/stealthy-knife way or alternatively be one of the healers, hmmm, that might be an idea.... Probably from the Vale.
3) A weird mix of the two, due to my love for the dornish: A travelling soldier, of small noble birth, who plays the role of daring fighter with a touch of mysterious political adept in there.
-All of these concepts would be about 25 years old, give or take a few years, and would be loyal to House Heron for some reason (not going to bring in a crazy sycopath who hates the Lord of the land).

At 25 he'd be a little young to have been appointed by Alf's father, but the previous master could well have died recently. With no lands he would either be a household or hedge knight, presumably fought in the war. The idea that strikes me is that he met Alf while serving with Lord Arryn's forces and after striking up a comradeship of some sort agreed to take service as part of his household.

It could work. If she was a noblewoman I'd need to know the backstory to say much more, given the political implications of a woman of another noble house staying for any significant period of time at another noble's household. If she was from the smallfolk or from a house minor enough not to cause political ripples then I could see her being hired as a retainer if she had some useful talents, whether in healing or administration or so on.

A female soldier? Hm. The character would have had to prove she was competent, rather than some noble's daughter acting up, but there's no pressing reason why Alf would turn down capable talent. His father on the other hand was pretty staunch on appearances, and keeping a Brienne on retainer would possibly have damaged appearances. Additionally the Dornish fought on the other side, although if accounted for that could also be interesting.

Yep. Crazy psychopaths would result in an early end of game for one of us.
So I am thinking of joining house Witherly, though unsure as to type of character.
Probably something that's good at intrigue, as that's the sort of thing I tend to come up with. Cloak and dagger-ish maybe, as that's something I haven't tried my hands at yet.

Yeah that one would probably be older than 25, more 30s. I'd say son of another minor house, maybe a ward of Alf's father?

It would probably be minor noble house, or perhaps a cousin if that fits? So out of the direct line of succession.

Well actually I'd thought of this one as male (which I ought to have written rather than leaving it ambiguous). So a reason for being there could either be a rebel Dornish house, so a lord in exile? Or maybe a son of a defeated lord who left due to his family's shame? I don't know, just throwing out ideas.

That would fit in nicely, as far as it goes at least. In any case I'll try to get the backstory polished up and posted tomorrow when I get home.

I would be fine with either, but Tialait would have to decide whether a cousin is allowable.

Ah, my mistake. I assumed the reference to the Dornish, well... yeah. It would depend, I imagine, on when the house rebelled. If it sided with Robert then considering how many times a house is said to have had it's lands expanded as a reward or seized as a punishment for being on one side or the other of the rebellion in the books, Robert would presumably returned the seized lands after he ascended the throne.

as none went for ciel ill give it a shot with ciel ill try that, some sort of scuire or something if shcmee or something
Anything will work with House Ciel really. They are a militant group who are low on population. Whether its a Squire, a Septon or even a Maester, all are quite needed at the Steep End.
A squire could also end up hanging out with Merek's kids. He has 3 sons and 3 daughters. If the squire's father is a wealthy Lord, then the most obvious choice is that the Squire was accepted into the Ciel household in order to improve commercial ties (the Ciel's mines are exhausted and they are desperate for iron.) Either he can squire for Lord Merek himself, or he can be a squire for one of Merek's Hammers (his immediate family and personal guard), meaning that if he is old enough, he probably played a part in Robert's Rebellion.
Also manipulative types are also welcomed... House Ciel has had more or less an up and coming House with everything going for it... so that's why I made someone as dangerous as Merek.
*Edit* Also, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am currently almost done reading "A Feast for Crows". Therefore in order to avoid ruining any plot twists for anyone who hasn't read the books yet, I'm going to be putting spoilers any time I mention something that hasn't been shown in the "Game of Thrones" series.

I don't want to rain on your parade or anything... but a 14 year old with 5 fighting... AND 5 bonus die to swords... i know that he trained hard, but come on. that's unrealistic. Unless your going to give him the blood of heroes quality... I would hope you would raise his age. You dont have to change his age category or anything... but at least 17 or 18 man.
An anointed and sponsored knight has a fighting skill of 5. A 14 year old should not be able to beat them. And then his athletics is 5 as well. A 14 year old is the strongest and fastest person from the town he is from? He is certain to become legendary. <_<;
But that's just my opinion. DM of course has the run of things.
5 skill and 5b? That doesn't seem like the squire.
As for what you can play, you can be any member of the family. Distant or otherwise, you can be not related but just loyal. You can make any one who would be considered loyal to the house.
