Default Cheaper Alternative for Citadel Primer?

Just recently Citadel has reissued their entire line, and their black spray primer now costs literally twice what it did before.

Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative here in the U.S.? The Citadel primer is excellent on minis, but I just can't afford it now.

You should probably ask the people in the modelling thread, not here. I'm sure Cregan Tur would have some ideas, he's a professional model painter.

Well, I wasn't entirely sure where to ask the question, and no idea where the modelling thread (subforum?) might be.

If a friendly neighborhood mod could move my question to the right spot, I'd be much obliged.

You might want to poke the mods by reporting your post and asking them to move it.

Krylon primer
Rustoleum primer
The Army Painter makes some nice primer as well

In any case, just go to a hardware store or Walmart and buy some normal spray primer. The citadel stuff is really not that high-quality, anyway.

I personally prefer the Krylon sprays because of the nozzle they use, and the paint itself is pretty good as well.

Okay, thanks for finding the thread a good home.

And Forrestfire, thanks for the good suggestions. I'll give the Krylon a try and see how it does.

I use the primer from The Army Painter, and to me it's OK

Car body primers. Try a few out on a model you don't really want/like. Leave the model for 24 hours at least for the paint to cure before painting over it.

It's great because the paint is tough and it won't cause extra layers of paint to rub off. This makes it especially good for metal models - if only I'd known that before painting my Feral Warpwolf for Hordes . . .

Thanks for the additional suggestions. Just wanted to report that I tried the Krylon flat black and it seems to work pretty well.

I tested it on a mini that I used for a sea-raider in my last game session. He is now my Krylon Raider.

I use Vallejo paints for my painting - it's the same colours as citadel (and were going to be the official citadel stuff, but it got called off last minute) with slightly different names, better quality than citadel, and cheaper.
