Silly Message Board GamesA forum for any kind of quote games, continuing story games, "What would you do if?" games, or whatever anyone comes up with. Old threads will now expire after one month.
The other day I was attending a local fair and had folks who didn't even know what a common turkey was.
So for fun and education, post a photo or illustration of a creature. Can be genuine, mythological, this includes cryptids, or extinct.
- We need more specifics than 'a frog' but you don't have to name the exact species of south american dart frog latinese madeupicus, for example.
- We'll use the honor system, so please don't look it up. If you want to do added security against this, just upload a pic through tinypic or something.
- To submit put Critter <number>
- To answer put Answer <coinciding number>
Once we get going I'll make a list of creatures guessed and those not guessed.
The random background generator is awesome. I got a NG dwarven magus who was involved in a "pleasure" scandal with some arcane experiment backfire as well. My imagination is running off with that.
Preferably like this so I know it coincides with the number two animal.
Answer 2
Spoiler
A wolverine, the largest of the weasel family, found primarily in northern America and Canada.
Also, if you can't guess, you can still post your own creature. Like the one below is probably a stumper for many because you rarely see them, only hear them.
I can't remember the name, but it's a type of owl that disguises itself as part of a tree?, I remember seeing it in a cracked artical, but can't remember it's name. So not quite and answer I suppose.
Critter 4

Close. It is a nocturnal bird, but not related to the owls.
Answer 4
Spoiler
Deep sea fish I'm assuming, and at first thought maybe a lantern or dragonfish, but doesn't have the teeth.
I'm going to go with Hatchetfish, though can't be sure unless you show me a side picture.
Hatchet fish is corect(it was hard to find any pictures of one from the side that were close enough to actually make out anything other then the shape).

Nighthawk. A member of the Swallow family, eats mosquitoes.
Eats mosquitoes but not of the nighthawk family either. Getting very close however.
Answer 6
Spoiler
I want to say red fox, but it looks a bit lanky for a normal fox, nor do they tend to have a black ridge on their backs. Its tail is also not as fluffy as I'm used to seeing.
If not for the vegetation around it'd I'd also think some wild desert dog, which would explain its lankier attribute, thinner fur and large ears.
Assuming this isn't just a normal variation of fox, I'm going to go with a Dox, half dog/half fox.
6 is'nt a fox(it's a different canid entirly)
answer is below, since it's not related to anything specific(so it might be very hard to guess)
Spoiler
Number 6 is actually a maned wolf, a type of canid that lives in south america.
They are famous for looking like lanky foxes though, and "fox with stilt legs" actually gives about as many results on a search engine for images of them as their correct name does. link to a wikipedia article on it, it's a pretty neat creature

Then it must be a Whip-poor-will. Don't have them around here.
BTW, nighthawks aren't hawks. They're swallows as in "the swallows of San Juan Capistrano."
Correct. I know they're not real hawks, but a type of nightjar, which make them cousins of the whip-poor-will.
I'd also have taken chuck-will's-widow
Never heard of the 'swallows of San Juan Capistrano'. That's something to look up...
Edit: And from what I read those swallows are just cliff-swallows who make their nests on the sides of the chapel. Is there something where the nighthawks also come into the story?

Huh, that's pretty awesome. Never even heard of it, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.
It's the ears that really perplexed me, though now that I read it's because it's nocturnal it makes sense. They're big because of hearing, not heat loss.
I'd say Critter #7 is a South American Moth. It's not a butterfly, it's to big and to fat for that, it's quite similar to the "luna moth" that I always see around my place, just the Luna moth is green.

OK, this is clearly a rock hopper penguin. Briefly thought it might've been a puffin, but that was being stupid. Weren't those in that one penguin movie about surfing?

I don't know the kind of moth, but Starwulf is closer.
Identifying features of a moth include also "fuzzy" antennae... butterflies tend to have slender ones.
Also, Monarchs have very different wing shapes and patterns
Okay, that one's either the Monarch Butterfly someone mentioned, of the Painted Lady that looks similar to it. Or a different sort, but that's what I remember from second grade.
