Wow, we really did see like 90% of the first part already, didn't we?
Everything looks good so far, only I can't help but feel like Cadance and Shining being there did nothing to improve the episode, almost the opposite.
Oh, Pinkie ...
And Rainbow Dash! You so silly
Wow, that's a lot of shadow and darkness.
Response
Spoiler
I don't know that Shining and Cadance did much as far as acting/voicework for making it good. They served a reasonable storytelling purpose by allowing the mane 6 to act freely while feeling under pressure.

Twilight is now officially a Blue Mage.
Also, Applejack has some kind of mental issue where she keeps putting herself into positions where she has to lie constantly.

Applejack didn't lie this time, she just pointed out distracting things.
Agree on the blue mage point. Also, looks like Sombra's final defense is some sort of illusion spell, probably one that plays off the target's worst fear given Twilight's neuroses about her teacher. On the up side, this seems like a great character growth moment.

So, crystal heart was on top of the tower whole time. If only Twilight knew anyone who could fly. If only...
Also, big character development moment wasted on kinda poor scene. That was nowhere near big fear, and how Twilight knew about 'second level studies' anyway?

Wonder what they are testing her for. In any case it will likely be used for a ton of alicorn twilight fics.
Celestia sure showed off her powers today. Perhaps she subconsiously want's to reafirm her position in twilights eyes after the whole Chryralis incident
returned? Windigoes I call Windigoes.
Why did shining do that.
That was cute rainbow.
I loved Cadences comment on their meetings.
Rarity, really cracks her facade.
Literal pinkie is literal.
I really like a lot of the small details in this episode.
Really nice songs too.
That fair seems more promising than I would I have thought. It'll go wrong in a minute. And then it did.
Part 2:
That horn piece are gonna be important.
Again Lag should be cursed and banished. Then thrown in a dungeon where it was banished to. And turned to stone. especically lag which starts right after the comercials
A moment I thought Sombra was a fan of hiding stuff in plain sight.
Also twilight is an awesome student.
She caught herself with her magic, that was really cool.
That must be an Illusion, based on personal fears I would guess.
If so it says a lot about twilight that failing the test and making celestia angry is what her mind called up.
Spike to the rescue.
Also AWWWw.
Joustershy is hilarious.
Flipping gravity is a need trick.
Again so many small details I love in this episode. far to many to mention them all.
I hope Twi, teleports out of that trap, or at least tries to.
And she did. Yay!
And twi makes the right choice in spite of failure, being her greatest fear.
Cadence throw.
Huh, the heart is cadences cutie mark, didn't notice that before.
And channeled positive emotion energy saves the day yet again.
I love how all the relationship have been shown in these episodes.
The daw is strong in them.
Season 3 is off to an absolutely great start.
Also I am betting many moments here are going to be used to support one ship or another.

It was good, not the best two-parter we have had, but still good. King Sombra seemed like a rather weak villain, in fact I think I would rank him worse then even NMM. Also, Twilight, I'm not sure it is such a good idea for you to be tapping into all that dark magic.
Also, I have to say, those ads for future episodes looked....interesting. 0_0

Yay, more FlutterDash fodder! Well, a little, at least
Oh God... that ad. "Discover her true destiny"? And who were those ponies with Celestia? Was too quick, I didn't get a good look.
And RariJack fodder too :D
Alright ... again, I really feel like it would have been better without Cadance and Shining, but that's probably just my dislike of Shining and to a lesser degree Cadance.
Anyway, it was alright, not spectacular, pretty standard for these two parters really. Only, it really bugs me that we don't know what the "next level of her studies" is. I had hoped I wouldn't have to worry about that after today.
Oh well. That's my first reaction. Probably has more to say later, once I've digested it a little more

Any thoughts on what the "next level" will be for Twilight? Also, Umbra? lost his horn right away, but then somehow regrew it. The gravity spell was a nice choice, although I was expecting somesort of teleportation like she was doing earlier in the episode.

only serious problem is that they have 2 pegasi and no one could have just gone up to get the thing?
i also thought RD was a bit too much of a jerk to fluttershy with the jousting.

This is the only time when Spike saved the world and snap out Twilight's nightmare. Too bad Twilight didn't get the credit.

King Sombra's a unicorn, a corrupted version. Too bad that Shining Armor's barrier spell was compromised but nice throw since Gimli.

Well, I'd say it felt rushed, but that criticism has been leveled at literally every 2-parter, and I think it's just the nature of the series at this point. You start getting into the story and they're already nearly out of time.
In terms of the actual episode, this seemed to have two different focus points. One was actually protecting them from Sombra, who was more of a force of nature than a villain really. Having the shadow cloud being sentient did add a little tension near the end as it went after Spike and trapped Twilight, but it was basically just a shadow death cloud. If they had another 10 minutes, I would have liked to know who Sombra was before and how he came to power, but since it wasn't relevant to the resolution of the problem, they didn't do it and just made him a force of nature instead of a character.
The second focus was Twilight's hang-up, which was a sort of personal fear of failure and the fact that we've seen her get hung up before on trying to please Celestia. This was a character growth moment for her, although one that doesn't surprise me all that much. I've said before that when dealing with external problems Twilight is actually very skilled and competent. What we saw here is her having both a major external problem and a major internal problem and she overcome her own issues to do the right thing, which was good.
Randomly, what's up with Luna summoning a spellbook with stars on it at the end? It seems like something is being planned and that ending moment was a very mysterious portent.

The ending was a bit weak, IMHO. What self-sacrifice? What did Twilight sacrifice? Prestige? What?
Had Celestia went with angle 'you did right thing, saving others comes before anything' I'd agree, but 'sacrifice' angle doesn't work without her really sacrificing anything.
Villain without borders in drawings look a bit creepy, but that's all. Sombra did very little, if only that was three parter with some flashback or his motives... He had some good traps, though.
What was the suspect book Celestia held in the end?
Also, was Celestia dumb enough to show dark side magic to Twilight without explaining anything about dangers and all?
Were all crystal ponies earth kind? Any unicorns/pegasi? Also, my crystal BB collection is now canon, deal with that haters

Somber doesn't seem to be analogous to a single *Creature*. He is, however, the template for the dark emperors. It's more prevalent in eastern mythos, but it fits into many 'evil king deposed, returns undead' stories.

It was okay. Not the best, but far from the worst. I quite liked Somber, but I felt he was really under-developed. The main issue I had with the story is the same issue I had with the all the other two-episode specials, it kind of feels like they're squishing an epic story arc into two episodes, which is a shame.
Rarity was pretty awesome.
But yeah, over all, I'd say it was weaker then the other two-episode specials, but still enjoyable. I still enjoyed it more then the Elements of Harmony episodes.
I would kind of like to see Twilight get taught by Luna, what with all the "final" test thing, the glances and secret talking between her and Celestia, as well as the black book at the end.
only serious problem is that they have 2 pegasi and no one could have just gone up to get the thing?
i also thought RD was a bit too much of a jerk to fluttershy with the jousting.

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have worked. The tower might have been magically shielded, and it didn't look the same before and after Twilight opened that magical doorway, although I'll have to check when the episodes come out on iTunes what changed. I think before the top was closed off and Twilight opening the door up altered the architecture. Also the trap might have worked even better against a pegasus than it did against Twilight and Spike.

Twilight was willing to sacrifice her hopes and aspirations to save others. We just saw that her worst fear was being dismissed by Celestia, and she really seems like she wouldn't know what to do with her life if she was no longer Celestia's pupil. Having to live a "normal" life probably would be devastating for her, even if you should be a perfectly fine university professor or something. But she was willing to give up her own desires to please Celestia and risk her livelihood in order to save other ponies.
