So on the actually more interesting and less faux-terror inducing bite of Season 3 add preview I think is pretty clear:
Spoiler
These are Arabian horses clearly.
A poll in the ponyverse has already mentions Saddle Arabia too.
Spoiler
Really? I hope that "Saddle" is the name of the ruling family (or, if it's part of Equestria, the family to whom power has been delegated by the diarchy), then. If "Saddle Arabia" is the name of a piece of geography and not the name of a polity or subdivision, I'm afraid I will have to rage.

As far as I can tell from the ponythread spoiler comments:
Spoiler
This episode was bad and peeps should feel bad for making it.
Premiere thoughts
Spoiler
Not at all. It's on the level with pretty much all the other 2-parters, as others have said. Sure, there are a couple logical holes, and a couple things are clearly there for the purpose of selling toys, but those are small. Though I do plan on rewatching it in better quality to pick up on the things I missed.
Now, for my other thoughts:
The hints of Twilight's destiny have gotten even stronger. I really hope that pays off well in the future, in a way that does not involve alicorn Twilight. I also want to see exactly why Luna is feeling apprehensive.
I forsee much RariLight. The way she put her hoof over Twilight's at the end was just very... shippy.
And speaking of the end, I think that song is going to be playing through my head for a while. It was a bit of a pleasant surprise, really. I do love me reprises.
I would like to see a bit more about Somber/Sombra. Whether its in the show proper or in fanfiction doesn't matter quite so much.
So we see Trixie statues in the ads, and Twilight performing magic in some kind of arena (levitating animals). The scene with Celestia and those ... horses seem to take place at that event, so Celestia is there to withness Twilight competing against Trixie? That seems ... bigger than I would expect. Trixie must have been really busy planning and arranging this
Deadly, a delightfully daring drawer and drafter of dissertations. Defying the dictations of our disparate denizens, Deadly decides his direction with a dirth of dependence on the decisions of despotic desperados. Deadly detests dismissive derision, and will debate any dude or dame that dares to detest discussion.

I doubt they care enough to specify that sort of thing. And aren't required to follow our reasoning behind names.
Then again this show has reference Aztec mythology so they might.
*Shrug* He is king. He might see Crystal Empire as rightfully his, and nothing else will do?
Or maybe with its resources he could take over Equestria, then easily enslave Griffons and Zebras, but not without. Who knows. I just wish we saw a bit of the motivation.
Spoiler
I suppose. It still seems flimsy to me, though, and hard to reconcile with the comment by one of the Crystal Ponies about King Sombra "coming to power". That, to me, suggests a coup rather than ascension via whatever means was legal in the Crystal Empire a thousand plus years ago. That, in turn, suggests that the Crystal Empire was just as important to his plans a thousand plus years ago as it is now, and that his motivations go beyond simple covetousness.
I'm aware that I'm treading into territory not really touched on by the show at this point, on the basis of highly circumstantial evidence. But that's the point, and where we agree. For Sombra to be effective, we should know either a lot more, or nothing at all.

Unless I missed something (which is entirely plausible), I don't think that competition is something Trixie planned, I would say it is more like the Unicorn equivalent to the young flyers competition.

That is quite possible, and likely more probable I guess

And I wonder about that blue halo behind his head. Luna's tail?

I don't know, I meant De Lancie sold the character. He played chaotic tricksters before, he did a lot to make something not very different from Sombra (Discord could have been unintelligent storm of chaotic magic energy and it would change little in episode's plot) work. Remove this (by dubbing in other language) and a lot of reason of it working is gone.
Had Sombra been voiced by James Earl Jones, the actor alone would have the character 20% cooler and brought comparisons to his previous roles, but as it is, Sombra is what Discord could have been. But scarier, IMHO.

When Twilight turns AJ and ... Rarity I think into tiny ponies. Also there's a new big poster-like thing up on EqD with lots of Trixie statues and a dark, ominous Ponyville

S3
Spoiler
I agree, and don't forget what Celestia said about the Crystal Empire. Namely, it has powerful magic that effects (affects?) the entirety of Equestria. In fact, if it's as powerful as it seems to be, then taking over the Empire should be the first step to any plans of conquest.

What is this ... Gak? I've seen a few uses of that word now related to the new episode, in contexts that I'm not sure makes sense to me.
Spoilered just in case it is ... well, spoilers
It's a toy product (in real world) that is gooey and like playdough. It's kinda filled up most of the ads in crystal ponies episode.

Its nothing to do with the episode but Gak is like this a softer brighter colored silly putty ooze... that was heavily advertised in commercials today. Like with 4 in row in a break.

just the beginning for last two episodes. Maybe King Sombra grew from the horn and began to wreck havoc on Equestria (See Desolated Apple Acres and Carousel Boutique Screenshots might be either his rule or nightmare and fear of Applejack and Rarity).
On the speculation:
Spoiler
What is the beginning of Crystal Ponies?
- Earth Ponies who were mutated from Crystal Hearts.
- Product of Extensive Unicorn- Earth Pony interracial romance, ala Bretons from Elderscrolls.
- Magic Shampoo that shines when they are happy.
Scootaloo is
- an orphan?
- a pegasus raised by earth pony parents, thus her inability to fly (Maybe she fell from the clouds as a baby and fell into a cabbage patch).
