You act as if Equestrian apples have a seasonal growth cycle as opposed to simply appearing on the trees when they are empty and the stars are right.

I think it's still possible, when you click on the citizen management tab on the right it should bring up a bunch of circles for each tile, whereupon you can "lock" citizens into working specific tiles (leaving the rest up to whatever focus you have that city set on)

Ah, good. This time we're only barely 47 pages and already have a clear winner.

There are several options. You can assign each one manually in the city management page by clicking the corresponding circle, or you can have the game take a shot at optimizing based on any single resource or a balanced approach. It's actually pretty useful to muck around with it, as optimizing for food early can grow a city much faster, then you can queue everything for production and get top tier units in 1-3 turns.

BUT if Luna was trapped by the Nightmare's influence, then the stars aiding in her escape is referring to Twilight. You know, the one with a star shaped cutie mark who discovers the only way to free her with the Elements.

Not sure if it was intended that way originally but I always figured that particular dangling plot thread was resolved

But we still can't discount the possibility astrological threats, considering the wide array of myths drawn from. Entering into an age of strife Mayan style? Some sort of Primal plane moving close to the ethereal causing mixing with something that sounds like northern-European elf lore?

The hellish nightmare that marks astrological cycles seen in Ebberon would be interesting.

I don't think her business was doomed at the start. There's always a demand for Apple Family Cider and until the episode there was apparently no mass production of cider known in the area. So the business was pretty safe with no competition. Even though not all ponies could get their hands on the cider, there wasn't an alternative yet.

However, now that we know mass production is possible with this episode, AJ's business is in trouble unless she updates her business model. The episode shows she can get a huge volume of cider done with an hour's time and five friends. *So from then on, yes she has to keep the production up or lose business, but it seems that cutting a deal with the brothers isn't necessary as long as she increases her work force.
Actually, we don't really know mass production is possible. The Flim Flam brothers made a device specifically to make cider, which relates to their narrative purpose and possibly their cutie marks; together they are a whole apple. But they were gunning for Sweet Apple Acres specifically. Odds are, this was their first run of the machine, which would be impossible to duplicate. Having it so soundly beaten as far as quality goes, and given the evidence as to how... "accurate" pony news is ("OH MY CELESTIA, is that NIGHTMARE MOON?"), everyone knows the Flim Flam brothers made a machine that failed and wasted time and product and cases property damage. If they eat try to get funding or spread the idea of mechanization they'll be laughed out of town.

Which is unfortunate. I feel that dumb decisions should have a price. Applejack lost. She lost because she and her family were dishonest, shady, an downright backwards. They needed to be taught a lesson, and their damned plot armor protected them instead.

EDIT:
Be trigger-happy Twilight in this flash game!
I really would have preferred everyone enjoying their awesome cider though, really. The bet ending would have been friendship winning the race, work ethic an integrity triumphing over teh evul biznass core-pourit monstwr, and the brothers making a killing recouping their losses by selling the cider they made in the competition at competitive prices, showing AJ a thing or two about actual business an teaching is all a valuable lesson about how no matter how noble your intentions, a monopoly can have negative repercussions.

I don't think that level of logic can be taken to a loose bet with obviously missing factors amongst the actors of a child's show. If the problem was "the deal was sloppy", "the details were hashed out in the background" doesn't actually address that.

No, that's the Anomaly itself. The resonance gift is one of sound and fury, how power, kinetic, electric, thermal, keeps people down, oppresses them. The essence would taste of the chalky mix of burnt powder caps and tears. Spirits of chaos and gunfights, ambushes, despair and elemental destruction will flock to your abode and breed, feasting on each other until a magath rises and founds an electric-death kingdom.

That could be centuries down the road though, so you'll only have to deal with crime statistics being worse, and every mugger and murderer looking like a loved one right before they pull the trigger.

No that probably won't stick. Resonance changes are not the same thing as massively affecting arcana used in the area. It will just always have the feeling of a wild storm and a strong sense of life, power, and vigor, rather than whatever was there before. How did this conversation make it into ponythread anyway? I think half the ponies here think we're all crazy.

Quote:
I agree with you that the episode is in blatant disregard of the teachings of economics. However, I think the episode is a rather accurate reflection of how most of the world also seems to act in blatant disregard of economics. The Apple family acts almost entirely out of pride in Super Speed Cider Squeezy. First, they're too proud to admit that the machine could work better. Then, when Granny Smith tastes the cider and realizes that it's perfectly good, she's too proud to admit it and they don't buy the machine. Then they rush into a bet and they're too proud to point out the obvious problem that they own the apples.*

They also stand by their reputation with the rest of Ponyville, and I think they would be more hurt if the other ponies viewed them as cheats or tricksters for making a bet and then refusing to give up their apples than they would by losing their own farm. That's just how much they care about their reputation.

It's a prime example of non-economic factors playing a leading role over economic factors. And it's not stupid or wrong, although it might be irrational.
Hmm.

I still think LVII could work well with something involving "level 2", but I need someone with brain for smart making to come up with something.

Didn't like the fact you can't rename units in Civ V. While it's not a thing I used heavily in Civ IV, I did use it to name my high level units for ease of identification. Great Generals are way less effective than in Civ IV (and most Great People are generally.) Waaaay long to load (even just to the main menu, not even the saved games!) Don't like the lack of direct citizen micromanagement; I preferred being able to make them work exactly what squares I wanted in Civ IV.
As others have pointed out above, you can micromanage the citizens, but have to enable it first in the top right of the city screen. As for the crunchy data stuff, I do believe there are at least a few mods out there that do exactly that, though I never looked into them.
I would think Great People have been rendered a little less effective since you can eventually buy them with faith (in the expansion at least), and if you aren't focusing on religion much, you have a lot of that stuff lying around.

Unless Apple Acres just has like a dozen different groves all with varieties that bear fruit at different times of year, the number of episodes we have seen with the trees having apples on them and then being harvested would imply the show spans decades.

My headcannon was always that the Flim Flam brothers planned to ramp up the costs of the magic to run the Sqeezy after the free first year to exorbitant prices, a la printers and the ink that goes in them, but comically moreso.

Also, Gak gak gak.

Plus, this dry-run gave me a much better idea of what to do for next time (larger map, better Civ - sorry Equestria, but you kinda suck with that ability that I got to use like, twice during a 380-odd turn game) and go for Tradition straight out of the gate instead of piety (which I did because I'd gotten a bit behind on the Faith and I wanted to snag a good pantheon before all the decent ones went!)
Well, at least you gave it a go. I heard a lot of Civ4 fans ignoring Civ5 for being too dumbed down or something.

I think, once I'm done with Pokemon W2, that I'll give Civ4 a go. Perhaps I'll do like you, play a pony mod version and then compare the two, just coming from the other direction, as it were.

Also, I reccommend Persia. The move bonuses during golden ages are godly.

Or that the action takes place over a very short period of time and not in chronological order. Also yes the Apples do have many different types of apples growing at one time which likely have different harvesting times.

I actually believe the first season took place over a couple years, so yeah. Sure.

There was actually a really long joke there that got just a bit too sexist for me to continue it. The punch line being a link to the world record for sniping distance being linked as an example of male erotica.

Seriously, over two kilometers. Three shots, two kills and one put of commission gun emplacement. That shot was from far enough away that it had to take into account the curvature of the earth. That's awesome.

*sigh*

Y'know, it would be helpful if they had actually documented those features, if they weren't going to make them as straightfoward as the earlier ones (in this case, where you just clicked on the main city map screen). If they're not gonna give you a proper manual anymore, they need to do a far better job with their in-game documentation. I looked at that tab (right out of the gate), but there only appeared to be settings for how the AI distributed the citizens, and the only "manual" button appeared to be for the specialists. Again, I'll give that a stab next time.

I would think Great People have been rendered a little less effective since you can eventually buy them with faith (in the expansion at least), and if you aren't focusing on religion much, you have a lot of that stuff lying around.
I could only buy Great Merchants and Great Prophets (at least how I was playing, I think there were other options with social policies or religions). Not being able to use any but Great Scientists to research tech was a bit annoying, but there you go. The old Great Generals were the biggest loss (especially now they made individual units more valuable by negating the Stack'o'Doom...)

I haven't looked at other mods yet, granted.

It kinda is. (And why I didn't buy it at release.) Vanilla Beyond the Sword (2nd expansion) Civ IV had 92 techs, expansions Civ V as 80. IV is sort of like the 3.x to V's 4E (but not quite that drastic).

Incidently, I recommend instead of a pony mod (as the only one out there isn't as completed even as the Civ V one, so you're not missing much, and the leaders wrok differently, so they don't have completely unique traits as standard), you play the NextWar BTS mod as a normal game (as that basically adds the sci-fi units to the end of the regular tech tree) - if you can find a pony mod FOR NextWar (and you probably can!) even better. (Though non-official mods for Civ IV have to be installed manually, rather than in-game, which is something Civ V is done better.

No, I think you're getting that backwards. Fluttershy is MaCoy (note short sleaves) and Twilight is Spock getting hit on... (The idea of Grumpy, Cantankerous Fluttershy is hilarious...) That actually makes sense.

Pinkie as engineer? Why not? Given that out of all the Main Six, she already has a grasp of mechanics (flying machine anypony?)

(On checking the artist's page, he says AJ is Sulu (apparently, there is a difference in the uniforms between the two (different ranks), but I'm not quite that big enough a Trekkie to know which (though I did wonder.))

Also, this by the same artist.

Considering some of my older books that are pretty central to the game (RMCII, SpaMCo I) are currently out-of-availability as far as I know, the chances of anypony prying them out of my cold, Undead hands is only fractionally higher than getting my starships...

Hey, now, that's not Chapel's uniform; that's McCoy's. Which says some interesting things about the Fluttershy-Dash-Twilight dynamic...

And AJ looks much more like Sulu than like Chekov to me; I don't know what Chekhov looks like, nor how a nineteenth-century playwright would get on a twenty-third-century starship.

Not sure which one AJ is, but I think Fluttershy is supposed to be Doc McCoy given she's at the fore-front with the Kirk and Spock. And Pinkie makes perfect sense for Scotty. Who else would be a master at the... "Warp" drive?

Maybe you should locate a good Anime-style artist and commision them to do it? Personally anything doing with the CMC already makes me think "hilariously over-the-top" now.

I think this should be balanced against the fact that the whole episode is one giant reference to The Music Man

I can forgive a great deal for good references.
I agree! I thought all the references were the point of that one.
Plus the subverted letter to Celestia will always be funny to me.

Lastly, I'm voting Construct Additional Pinkies for new thread title because it sounds better than ponylords or whatever the other one was.

While browsing youtube for something to listen to while do a bit of painting, and starting from the CMC orchestral theme used in that Civ V mod, I happened across this amazing version of the main theme. Unlike a lot of orchestral versions, this guy's stuff is fast as well as sweeping, and feels like it really could be the intro music to The Movie (this on in particular feels just like it sound be playing over the establishing credit montage, as the Mane cast (and supporting characters) go about their daily business (there's bits that sound they are for Pinkie, Fluttershy etc.)

This guy is incredible. He's done loads of these including Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, Final Fantasy... Pokemon (oh Lichemaster, Pokemon) Power Rangers... I'm still looking actually. It's just... unbelievable stuff.

Captain Planet does not deserve to be this awesome!
