Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
After all, its main purpose is to move around the galaxy ans destroy planets. Its not STATIONARY, hence why call it a station?
And dont mention that other space stations have moved (ex: DS9), AFAIK if wasnt meant to move and was damaged in the process...

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
Simple reason: When Kenobi called it a space station, he had no reason to suspect it was mobile.
Besides that, it's just on a completely different scale than a ship.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
DS9 is not the only other example of a space station that moves; Babylon 5 anyone?
Some cars are called "station wagons" but they still move.
"Station," is a word with a lot of meanings, not all of them synonymous with "stationary." English is weird like that, but remember that they don't actually speak English in Star Wars; they speak Basic and we are listening to a dubbed translation. The same way that the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings are actually a translation of The Red Book of Westmarch.Last edited by jedipilot24; 2013-12-02 at 03:16 PM.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
Because there's no word for a giant moon sized death ray device, so they have to call it by an approximation.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
Because it's too big to be called a ship, and that's basically it.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
The International Space Station moves too, in orbit.
More seriously, the Death Star is obviously the immobile center of the Star Wars universe. Everything else revolves and moves around it.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
Same reason we call an oil platform a platform and not a ship. Sure, it's mobile, but it doesn't move very quickly.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
Babylon 4 could move, mot B5.
And even then, its mobility features was meant to be used relatively few times. The majority of its existence was meant to be stationary.
Theres a statute of limitation of size for a ship?
The ISS does not move under its own power. In fact, it only moves because its the most cost-efficient localization in orbit. But its meant to STAY there. Compare to interplanetary probes meant to leave orbit, or the shuttle mmeant to takeoff and land.
Same as with B4. The oil rig is meant to operate and do its thing while stationary. and it will spend the majority of its existence in a single location.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
Base being a synonym of station would have the same arguement though.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
Station does not mean 'stationary', when used in this manner it is a place. And the term Space Station goes back to at least the 70's when they called things like Skylab and Mir ''Space Stations''.
And from fiction in the films 2001 and Alien, they called the 'buildings in space', Space Stations.
So it made sense, in 1979 to call the Death Star, a Space Station.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
actually, the ISS can move under it's own power. Apparently it uses it's boosters to maintain it's position in orbit.

Re: Why was the Death Star called a Space Station?
"Expeditionary Battle Planetoid" was the term Raith Seinar suggested...
Also, Star Ultra-Dreadnought Deluxe doesn't even begin to describe the monstrous power of a 160 km diameter death-bringer in a galaxy where most capital ships are under 2 km long. (It's much smaller than our Moon, but on par with Nereid, Neptune's 3rd-largest moon... DS-2 is larger than Titania)
(Super-Galactic Dai-Gurren/Cathedral Terra is bigger than the DS-2, assuming it assumed the form of a moon much like our own.)Last edited by Mando Knight; 2013-12-04 at 01:25 AM.
