Okay...Pain in the tuchas suggestion:
Go to the airport and talk with security. Ask them what documentation you would need, if any, to board the plane with the plates. It may be as simple as requiring DMV records showing the purchase of the vehicle and the ownership of the plates. What might be even simpler is to get temporary plates, which are basically paper, and securing them to the car while you travel home.
This, of course, applies to the use of common sense. In all likelihood, you will be arrested for your iPod making a strange noise as you board the plane.
