Default Not Dead Which Can Eternal Lie [Vestiges]

The multiverse is home to many strange and alien creatures, but it is perhaps the most terrible and inhuman of these that are known to scholars of the occult and forbidden as the Outer Gods, the Great Olds Ones, the most alien and horrible aspects of reality. Though some men, half-mad fools of cultists, worship them as gods, this is not the truth. They are best described as Cosmic Horrors, the ultimate evils born of the multiverse itself. They care little for men, though some, such as the Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathotep, take an interest in the mortal races. However, some cultists and scholars of occult have devised rituals and rites for contacting these Great Old Ones, and tapping their power. Although they are not like vestiges, trapped between worlds, they exist partially within the same dimension vestiges do, allowing binders and users of pact magic to tap their strength. Forbidden passages in ancient tomes such as the Necronomicon, the Book of Eibon, and Unaussprechlichen Kulten discuss the methods for binding the power of the Great Old Ones, and dire warnings of the consequences for taking them lightly. For, although the Old Ones are willing to allow mortals some of their power, it is never without dire consequences.

    Azathoth, the Blind Idiot God
Azathoth is the oldest and most powerful of the Outer Gods, a primordial being of madness that inhabitants the center of the universe.

    Vestige Level: 8th
    Binding DC: 40

    Legend
Azathoth is the highest and oldest of the Outer Gods, said to be both their progenitor and that of the Great Old Ones. He is utterly mad, a blind fool who sits at the center of the universe, surrounded by the rest of the Outer Gods. He has little to do with mankind and their world: rather, it is his servant and envoy, the devious Nyarlathotep, who carries out his will. Azathoth takes no notice of the world, forever lost within his own madness. Though few cults directly worship the Demon Sultan, with most occultists preferring to serve one of the lesser Outer Gods, there are still ancient and forbidden texts that detail the invocation of Azathoth, and the making of pacts with him. Azathoth offers tremendous power to those willing to tap into it, but at a dreadful cost.

    Manifestation
Azathoth manifests within his seal as a blinding light, from which the strangely manic music of otherworldly flutes can be heard to emanate. Azathoth gibbers senselessly from within the light, raving in his madness.

    Sign
Those bound to Azathoth are covered with hideous, tumor-like growths that seen to shine from within with an eldritch light.

    Influence
Those bound to Azathoth lose any trace of sophistication or culture they possess, being reverted to a primitive, savage state of mind. Their intelligence is not diminished, but they become strangely out of touch with civilization, the rest of mankind, and the world. It is not uncommon for those who regularly bind with Azathoth to become convinced that they are lesser Outer Gods themselves, and to feel his influence even when not bound to him.

    Granted Abilities
Azathoth grants those bound to him power over madness and fire.

    Lord of Madness (Ex)
After feeling the touch of Azathoth’s madness, no lesser force can usurp your mind. You become immune to confusion effects and effects that cause Wisdom damage or drain.

    Seething Nuclear Chaos (Su)
You can call upon the vast destructive power controlled by Azathoth to unleash fires hotter than the sun. As a standard action, you may evoke a 30 ft. cone of fire that deals 1d6 damage per binder level, max 25d6, to all creatures caught in it, with a Reflex save, DC 10 +1/2 your binder level + your Charisma modifier for half damage. Half the damage is fire damage, but the other half results directly from unearthly destructive power and is therefore not subject to being reduced by resistance to fire-based attacks. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Things Man Was Not Meant To Know (Su)
You can force the most depraved and terrifying secrets of reality into the mind of another, driving them utterly mad. This functions as the spell insanity, with a DC of 10 + ˝ your binder level + your Charisma modifier. However, unlike the spell, this ability is not permanent: once your pact with Azathoth ends, the target ceases to be affected by it. In addition, you can only use this ability on one creature at a time. If you use it on a creature while another one is still under its effect, the previous target is freed from the insanity. Once you use this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

    Wall of Fire (Su)
As a standard action, you may summon a wall of fire, as the spell. You do not need to concentrate to maintain the wall, and it lasts for a number of rounds equal to your binder level. The waves of heat the wall emanates deal 1d4 fire damage per two binder levels to creatures within 10 ft. of it, and 1d2 fire damage per two binder levels to creatures within 20 ft. of it but past 10 ft. of it. Creatures passing through the wall take 1d6 points of fire damage per two binder levels. The wall cannot be destroyed by dealing cold damage to it, like a normal wall of fire can. Once you have used this ability, you cannot use it again until 5 rounds after the end of its duration.

    Father Dagon and Mother Hydra
Father Dagon and Mother Hydra are the progenitors of the vile race of aquatic monsters known as the Deep Ones.

    Vestige Level: 5th
    Binding DC: 23

    Legend
Father Dagon and Mother Hydra are among the lesser Great Old Ones, and dwell within the depths of the sea. They are the parents to the Deep Ones, a race of aquatic monstrosities that dwell with them in sunken, cyclopean cities. The Deep Ones are the primal ancestors of Locathahs, Merfolk, Sahuagins, and many other aquatic races, but are far more monstrous than any of them. Dagon and Hydra exist in a strange, almost symbiotic union of essence–though they possess separate bodies, the spirit that animates them both seems to be shared, or at least merged. Thus, the binding rituals first practiced by the Esoteric Order of Dagon call on the power of both of the Deep One gods, not one.

    Special Requirement
Dagon and Hydra will not bind to any creature with the Fire subtype.

    Manifestation
Dagon and Hydra manifests within their seal as a pool of water, seemingly of limitless depth, from which emerges a pair of tentacles, each one covered with watery eyes and shark-like jaws.

    Sign
Those bound to Dagon and Hydra manifest what is known as the “Innsmouth look,” named after an infamous city populated by human-Deep One hybrids. Their ears shrink; their eyes become watery, bulging, and unblinking; their skin becomes scaly; and they develop vestigial gills on their necks.

    Influence
Those bound to Dagon and Hydra find themselves drawn to any body of water, finding it almost irresistible to enter it and remain for as long as possible

    Granted Abilities
Dagon and Hydra grant those bound to them the power to adapt to water, and to mesmerize the minds of others.

    Deep One’s Gift (Ex)
Those bound to Dagon and Hydra may breathe both air and underwater, and gain a swim speed equal to their base land speed. You do not gain this ability if you do not show Dagon and Hydra’s sign.

    Doomsong (Su)
As a full-round action, you may sing a mesmerizing song that lures a single creature to you. If that creature fails a Will save, DC 10 + ˝ your binder level + your Charisma modifier, it becomes entranced by your song, and can take no actions except to move towards you, ignoring hazardous obstacles or terrain. Once it comes next to you, it stands motionless, taking no actions, only listening to your song. If the creature is attacked or has a harmful spell cast on it, it breaks out of the trance. You must concentrate to maintain this effect, and can maintain it for a number of rounds equal to half your binder level at maximum. Once you have used this ability, you must wait until 5 rounds after the end of its duration before you can use it again. Creatures that successfully save against the doomsong cannot be affected again by it for as long as you remain bound to Dagon and Hydra.

    Echolocation (Ex)
You gain the ability to perceive your surroundings through sound while in water. You gain blindsight out to 30 ft. while submerged in a body of water. However, you can only perceive things with this blindsight that are in or touching the same body of water that you are in.

    Fast Healing (Ex)
The children of Dagon and Hydra, the Deep Ones, are said to be immortal, capable of healing any wound simply by immersing themselves in water. While bound to them, you gain something of the vitality of the Deep Ones. You gain fast healing 2 while bound to them. This increases by 1 for every three binder levels you have past 10th. In addition, the amount of fast healing increases by 1 while you are immersed in water. You do not gain this ability if you do not show Dagon and Hydra’s sign.

Glaaki, the Dweller in the Lake
Glaaki is an immense, slug-like Great Old One, served by an army of undead servants. He is perhaps the greatest scholar of eldritch lore, knowing far more than any mortal sage.

    Vestige Level: 5th
    Binding DC: 25

    Legend
Glaaki is a massive Old One of slug-like appearance, thought to have been brought to the world while imprisoned within a meteor, from which he was freed after its impact. He resides in a secluded and deep-lake, the exact location of which is a matter of great disagreement among various occult texts. Glaaki is capable of reanimating the dead, transforming them into his own servitors known as the Chosen of Glaaki. He has a great knowledge of the occult and eldritch, and the forbidden tome known as the Revelations of Glaaki were dictated by him to one of his high priests. The rituals used for making pacts with him are thought to have been devised by the Dweller in the Lake himself, though no one knows why he would do this.

    Manifestation
Glaaki manifests himself within his seal as a corpse-like figure, bloated and covered in algae. Small slugs eat through the flesh of the corpse-avatar, and Glaaki speaks with a voice like a death-rattle through it.

    Sign
Those bound to Glaaki begin to secrete slug-like ooze from their eyes, mouth, and other orifices.

    Influence
Those bound to Glaaki become obsessed with gathering and learning about the occult, particularly the other Great Old Ones.

    Granted Abilities
Glaaki grants those bound to him the power to create undead servants, as well as access to his considerable lore of the occult.

    Ancient Intelligence (Ex)
You gain a fragment of Glaaki’s immense intelligence, granting you a +4 enhancement bonus to Intelligence.

    Animate Dead (Su)
As a standard action, you can animate a dead creature as a zombie or skeleton under your control, as the animate dead spell. The animated creature serves you for a number of minutes equal to your binder level, after which it crumbles to dust. You can control 2 HD worth of undead creatures per binder level with this ability. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

    Forbidden Lore (Ex)
While bound to Glaaki, you receive a +10 competence bonus on all Knowledge checks. This bonus increases to +15 for Knowledge checks made regarding aberrations, Great Old Ones, Outer Gods, and similar topics of occult lore, at the DM’s discretion.

    Glaaki’s Wisdom (Su)
While bound to Glaaki, you may call on his wisdom, as the psionic power hypercognition. You may use this ability only once while bound to Glaaki.

    Nodens, Huntsman of the Abyss
Nodens is a strange Outer God, one who hunts the servants of the Great Old Ones and has been known to lend aid to mere mortals. Though often mistakenly thought to be a force of Good, Nodens is in reality far more complex.

    Vestige Level: 4th
    Binding DC: 22

    Legend
Nodens is an aberration amongst the Outer Gods. He has been known to actively oppose the Outer Gods and the Great Old Ones, and even to lend aid to mortals. Some call him an Elder God, and believe he is a force of good set to oppose the evil of the Outer Gods, but this springs from a fundamentally mistaken understanding of the Outer Gods. They are not forces of evil, not in the way that demons or devils are. Rather, they are simply utterly alien and inhuman, not evil, but uncaring. Nor is Nodens a force of good. He fights against Outer Gods and Great Old Ones because he is a hunter, and because they are the worthiest of prey. He does not aid lesser mortals caught up in the plots and machinations of the Outer Gods out of compassion or nobility, but simply to keep them out of the way of his hunt, or occasionally to use them as pawns against his fellow Outer Gods. He is just as alien and uncaring as the rest of the Outer Gods, but merely not as malevolent as they are. Nonetheless, many mislead cultists have taken him on as a guardian figure, and developed methods by which to secure his favor and blessing.

    Special Requirement
Nodens will not bind to an aberration or to a character with the Aberrant Blood feat.

    Manifestation
Nodens, alone among all the Outer Gods, manifests in a human form, taking the appearance of an elderly male, who speaks directly to the binder.

    Sign
Those bound to Nodens are surrounded by a cloud of luminous violet gas that clings to them like an aura.

    Influence
Those bound to Nodens seethe with the desire to hunt and kill aberrations, particularly those that serve Great Old Ones or Outer Gods.

    Granted Abilities
Nodens grants those bound to him the power to hunt and destroy aberrations.

    Heart of Nodens (Ex)
You gain a +2 enhancement bonus to Strength and Dexterity.

    Huntsman’s Reflexes (Ex)
While bound to Nodens, you gain Combat Reflexes as a bonus feat.

    Master Hunter (Ex)
You gain a +10 competence bonus on Survival checks, and gain the Track feat as a bonus feat.

    Aberration Slayer (Su)
Any weapon you wield while bound to Nodens gains the aberration bane ability, and has its critical threat range doubled when attacking aberrations. In addition, you gain a +2 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by aberrations. This bonus increases by one for every 3 binder levels you have past 7th.

Rhan-Tegoth, He of the Ivory Throne
Rhan-Tegoth is among the weakest of Great Old Ones.

    Vestige Level: 1st
    Binding DC: 10

    Legend
Of all the Great Old Ones, Rhan-Tegoth is the lowliest and weakest. He lacks the awesome power of Great Cthulhu, the wisdom of Glaaki, or the large and loyal cults of Hastur, and is generally considered to be comparable in power to the lowliest servants of the other Great Old Ones. Some prophecies speak of his survival being necessary to that of the Great Old Ones as a whole, but these were most likely forged by his cultists–though not large in a number, a few fools have found He of the Ivory Throne to be worthy of worship. Many occultists choose to label him the mocking title “Lord of Weakness,” and even his appearance–a spherical body covered in thin tentacles–does not provoke much fear, namely due to its strong resemblance to the Gnomish child’s toy known as a “kooshball.” However, rituals to bind him have still been developed, typically so that cultists might practice binding an Old One that cannot possibly harm them before moving on to more difficult gods.

    Manifestation
Rhan-Tegoth manifests within his seal as an empty ivory throne, from which he speaks with a voice comparable to the squishing of sludge or ooze.

    Sign
The skin of those bound to Rhan-Tegoth grows rubbery and thick.

    Influence
Rhan-Tegoth causes those bound to him to become insatiably hungry, eating everything they can get their hands on.

    Granted Abilities
Rhan-Tegoth grants those bound to him a resilient hide and a modicum of his strength.

    Rhan-Tegoth’s Hide (Ex)
You gain a +1 natural armor bonus to AC, and damage reduction 1/piercing and slashing. The natural armor bonus increases by 1 for every 10 binder levels you have, and the damage reduction increases by 1 for every 5 binder levels you have.

    Rhan-Tegoth’s Strength (Ex)
You gain Improved Bull Rush as a bonus feat.

    Rhan-Tegoth’s Vigor (Ex)
You gain an additional point of hp for every Hit Dice that you have. These hp are not temporary, but do go away when your pact with Rhan-Tegoth ends.

    Y’Golonac, the Violator
Y’Golonac is a Great Old One born from depravity and perversion itself.

    Vestige Level: 3rd
    Binding DC: 20

    Legend
Y’Golonac is a horrific Great Old One known as the god of the depraved and perverse–not merely the average perversity practiced by mortals, but of any act of depravity that a sentient being, sane or otherwise, has ever imagined. It is trapped within an ancient ruin, bound by some work of epic magic that has managed to restrain the physical form of the Violator, though he is capable of wandering beyond his prison by possessing mortals. Like Nyarlathotep, it takes an interest in human affairs, and derives what a man might call pleasure from the torment of mortals. The obscene blasphemies by which a pact with the Violator may be made are rarely used, typically because few binders wish to open themselves to its loathsome influence. Still, there are always those desperate enough to bind to Y’Golonac.

    Manifestation
Y’Golonac manifests within his seal as a stone wall, through which a pair of human hands jut. Each hand has a mouth in its palm, and the Violator speaks through them.

    Sign
Twin mouths open on the palms of those bound to Y’Golonac.

    Influence
Those bound to the Violator become unable to control their lusts and perversion without great force of will, often blithely committing acts of unspeakable depravity.

    Granted Abilities
Y’Golonac grants the power to defile and violate the souls of mortal creatures.

    Depraved Seduction (Su)
As a standard action, you may beguile one creature within 30 ft. of you. If it fails a Will save, DC 10 + ˝ your binder level + your Charisma modifier, it becomes charmed for a number of minutes equal to your binder level. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

    Horrid Beauty (Su)
While bound to Y’Golonac, you gain a deflection bonus to AC equal to your Charisma modifier, minimum +1. This bonus cannot exceed one-quarter of your binder level.

    Maw of the Violator (Ex)
You gain a pair of bite attacks, each of which deals 1d4 damage. You cannot use this bite attack if you are holding something in your hands. You do not gain this ability if you do not show Y’Golonac’s sign.

    Mindrape (Su)
As a standard action, you may make a touch attack against a creature. If the attack is successful, the mouth on your hand bites into it, dealing damage as normal, and allows you to violate its soul, dealing 1d4 Charisma damage and causing it to be shaken for 1d6 rounds. You do not gain this ability if you do not show Y’Golonac’s sign.

    Violater’s Soul (Ex)
While bound to Y’Golonac, you gain a +2 enhancement bonus to Charisma.

These are great. I especially like He of the Ivory Throne - I don't remember him from the original mythos, but your description reminds me of that Lovecraft/Evangelion story, Children of An Elder God, where they describe him as a kooshball.

Since you did Dagon and Hydra, any chance for a Spawn of Azathoth? I don't remember their powers off the top of my head, just that they're some kinda comet-like things that break off of Azathoth, hit a world, and devour that world, becoming a lesser form of the Demon Sultan in the process.

One thing you might think of doing is putting links to your previous threads in your latest ones, to make sure nobody misses anything.
People seemed to like this better, but only marginally so - the way one might prefer to be stabbed than shot. Optimally, one isn't stabbed or shot. Optimally, one eats some cake! But there are times when cake is not available, and instead we are destroyed. This is the deep poetry of the universe. -- Tycho Brahe

That's exactly what I was going from, shame they never finished. He actually does show up in a mythos story, think it was called The Horror in the Museum. Seeing as he ended up getting killed and stuffed by some guy, I think CoaEG gave him about the right treatment.

That sounds like Ghroth, the planetoid Outer God who goes around awakening Old Ones (the "lesser form of Azathoth" bit is just in CoaEG, as far as I know). I actually did try making one for him, but I didn't have any good ideas. Maybe I'll come up with some later.

I like these a lot. It's good to see more love for vestiges, and Lovecraft and binding is a match made in, uh, some kind of horror-filled far realm. In fact, best not to think about it.
