The Rules. You! Read these!

In order to try and keep these threads from becoming unmanageable, some rules have been created, and they accent the forum rules. Please read those first.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB one word posts should be spam everywhere. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* should also be considered spam. Quality of content trumps speed of response.
2. Ditch the "competition for control of the universe". It has ceased to be funny, and often branches out into little mock battles that fall into the spam definition laid out above. We've got a PbP section for fights, and even the Town has an arena, I believe.
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well.
4. Stop advertising other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please stop with single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Do not poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. No asking "What's the topic" or the ilk. This is *not* a conversation where you could've missed the begining, it's a forum where the current topic is nicely recorded for you. So read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details

Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to!

Previous Threads:
(We all have far too much spare time)

Spoiler

This thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. There is an IRC chat thingy set up for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat. It's win/win/win!

And now, without further ado, commence bantering!

I smell a new thread! The conflict is over and it is time to randomly discuss once again (how did Bushranger get this thread?)

*discusses*

edit: I guess I'm supposed to banter instead

We rolled 'dem bones over at Invisible Castle, there's a link to the roll in #92 post #1500.

The nice foggy morning has turned into a pleasant, partly cloudy, breezy day here. How's the weather where y'all are?

Cold and snowy. At least it stopped snowing... for now.

Edit: speaking of fog, last week we were beset with fog so thick that you couldn't see 100feet in front of you!

Hmm...new thread...tastes like the old one, but with less...stuffishness and a hint of oak

Also, anyone know of a good revision technique? preferably one that works less than 2 days before the actual exam?

I think the toucan is suffering from Acute New Thread Syndrome. I prescribe a long nap until the thread is no longer new.

Get your lazy *** into gear and actually, you know, revise?

(The ability to stay up for 48 hours straight and still manage to write sensible answers is the only reason I managed to graduate.)

Wow...I don't know whether to laugh or cry....48 hours?!?! I need at least 8 hours of sleep or I get sick....

@Mattkatt: When I write a paper, I write the entire first draft in one day, let it sit for two days, revise revise, read it out loud to catch errors, show it to my mom, read it out loud again.

So yeah...reading out loud and sharing with other people are probably my two favorite techniques....

That. Also just starting working; it's easier to keep working once you start. Break it into small chunks: work for an hour and then take a 10 minute break (for example to post here). Lather, rinse, repeat.

(Your "revision" is like editing papers, etc...?)

No.
He means, there's a test in less than two days and he has to remember all the content from the course in time for it.

Edit: MattKatt. It would help if you could give us an idea of what subject you're revising, and what kind of exam it'll be...

So an example of British revision would be going back through texts and memorizing appropriate equations, etc...?

Okay what the hell is wrong with the Silent Hill movie?
So much potential, all the way through, and then that ending. That lousy crappy ending.
I sat through a horror movie for that!?
What is wrong with you Christopher Gans? Why do you not know endings.
At least he managed to preserve a good chunk of the storyline, unlike certain other video game movie directors.

Hmph.
I also want cookies.

Silent Hill wasnt that bad of a film. Iv seen worse. I feel the jeepers creepers movies are a complete waste of time. they could have done so much more

Its an exam on the microstructures of materials, 2 hours long. Honestly though, I just need some general revision advice. Iv never been any good at it no matter what technique I try

Our politics?! Who wants to have bits of our politics?! Our politics are soooo divisive...not that anyone else's are any better, I suppose....

Yeah, well, in 1776 when we declared our independence, we were determined to become DIFFERENT than the English. That included changing our spelling, pronunciation, and everything....

Have you got decent course notes?

If so, read through them. As you read, make notes of your notes - condensing all major points and any important insights you may have gained from each lecture or tutorial. You should be able to condense the course notes down into two or three pages of A4.

Then, read through those pages of A4 again. This time you might like to use a highlighter, or underline in red. Pick out every thing that is absolutely vital - the distilled wisdom of the entire course.

Write it out again. Should fit on a much smaller piece of paper. Memorise it according to your own learning style. (I keep rewriting until it sticks. Others will recite it aloud, or close their eyes and visualise. Whatever works.)

Once you're sure it's memorised, re-read the 2/3 pages of A4. Then go back through the course notes once more to check you haven't forgotten anything.

Before you sleep, check that you can still recite/visualise/write out the distilled version. Then sleep.

Wake up. Go to exam. Pass.

PS: When I say 'write' I mean 'write'. If the exam's pen-on-paper then the revision should be too. It helps to train your hand to spell the terminology correctly / get a formula correct.

I go camping for the weekend and there's a new thread. I do have a monster fish story though!

So, the three years (including this one) that my troop has gone on this ice fishing trip, we only caught anything this year. This time, we made up for the bad years. We were catching Perch and Crappies pretty regularly throughout the day, and the tip-ups (Thing that you put over the hole and attach the line to, a flag comes up if you get a bite) caught a 30-some inch Muskie. The second time the flag went up, the guy pulling in the line was fighting it for about a minute, he thought it was a big catfish it was pulling so hard. He got a glimpse of it and confirmed that it was a monster. Next thing we know, the head of a enormous Muskie comes up and barely fits through the 6-inch diameter hole. I say only the head because at that point, the line snapped and it got away. Easily 40 inches long.

That fish will be remembered for a long time to come...

I've been fishing twice in my life:

1) off a dock in upstate New York
2) in the Caribbean.

Neither was nearly that eventful (although in the Caribbean - in the Belizean Cayes - my grandfather caught a fish that lived for an hour out of the water). That's pretty awesome.

Don't give up sleep to study the night before. A scientifical study has been released showing that sleep works better than cramming.

unsurprisingly.

So when I woke up this morning, my hair was barely wavy on one side and Shirley Temple-esque on the other. Must've been the way I slept or something.

This morning I woke up with my hair about 2 inches shorter than it was last night.
I hit my head on the ceiling because of miscalculations regarding balance.
