Default Baldur's Gate: Deeper shadows of Amn(Game Thread)

Athkatla, City of Coin. Home to many unique creatures and peoples, the best and the worst can be found here. You can find yourself a bussines contact here or a quick and painful death. Stepping through the gate, you are greeted by two guards which explain to you the common courtesy within city limits. You are also warned that while the Amnish guard is in control of the city, you are pretty much on your own while walking the streets. Armed with this knowledge, you enter the city.

Walking thru the city streets, you arrive to the Slums, a poor part of town. It is a dirty part of the city and beggars literally litter the streets. No sooner you are attacked by three of them then you make it to Copper's Coronet. Managing to get in the comfortable secludedness of the inn, you're greeted by a miriade of noices and smells. The Coronet is a shady place, but pleasant non the less. Ordering yourself some ale, you find yourself some companions, throw a game of dice and set to sleep a few hours after that.

At the meantime, strange things and ever stranger creatures are about in the city. In the sewers, under the Waukeen's Promenade, dark shadows move about, their purpose seemingly random, but to them, all but.

“We need to find something. Aran won't be happy if we come back with our hands empty.“

“It would be so much easier if I saw anything. The smell doesn't help any.“

“Don't worry. Soon, the smell will be the least of your problems!“

Quickly turning around, the two shoot arrows against the newcomer, but they hit only the wall. By the time they manage to register the threat, it is already too late. Their screams are soon cut short.

Waking in the morning, you decide you should buy yourself some equipment, so you set your step towards Waukeen's Promenade. Arriving there, you see that Promenade is actually made as a combination of living space, market space and lots and lots of different inns. Heading for Adventurer's Mart, you find yourself in a shop that is seemingly bigger on the inside than on the outside. Stepping up to the counter, you see an elf that introduces himself as Ribald. From his sly smile and the way he talks, you can see that this man knows his trade. After some purchases, you leave Adventurer's Mart many gold pieces lighter, but assured you've purchased the best equipment money can buy. Deciding you have some time before night settles in, you decide you need some entertainment. As luck would have it, there is a circus, not a stone throw away from Adventurer's Mart. After the show is over, you head to the Den of Seven Vales, where you decide to spend a night. After some troubles with a drunken guard, you set in your room and lay down for a night of dreamless sleep.

Not everybody's got your luck. For a beggars in Slums district, night is everything but dreamless. As if sleeping on hard, cold ground wasn't big enought of a problem, there are voices tormenting them. Cold, dark voices, promising them power and fame. Some flee for their life, knowing that nothing this good can come without a big cost. Others, too frightened to run away, are soon drawn into the shadows, never to be seen again. In the morning, their companions see that three of them are missing. Would this have happened in Government section of the town, everybody would be all over this. As things stand, nobody cares for a few beggars. They could have fallen of the bridge as easily as have been taken by a strayed hungry dog.

Morning finds you in the Temple section of the city. If you are religious or not doesn't really matter. The section itself is a site to behold. From the temple of benevolent Morning Lord Lathander to the dark temple of Stormlord Talos, they are all work of art. People come here to pray to their chosen deities as well as to get healed. Hands of the priests can bring even those that have crossed the Veil back. Sadly, the cost that comes with it is too much for most of the people to afford. Still, it is good to know where you can get help, should you ever get wounded. You would do wise to remember this. Going further down the road, you come upon the Hall or the Radiant Heart, an order of paladins, dedicated to upholding everything that is right and virtous. Beetwen the Shadow Thieves and everything outside the walls of Athkatla, you know that having a paladin on your side can be considered a blessing. Not having much more to do here, you had further and it doesn't take long before you find yourself in the Docks, where a smell of rotten fish permeates the air. The streets are busy here and alive with various people, from merchants offering you their vares, to more beggars. As you cross pass dark and foreboding building, you have a sense it's not as deserted as it's owner would like you to believe. The looks that others are giving it would confirm this. Docks being a living place to many people, you find yourself a place to stay for tonight at the Sea's Bounty. After listening to Tumb's stories for what seems like an eternity, you decide to afford yourself some luxury. Tonight, you sleep on the best mattress money can buy.

Sleeping tight, you don't hear when the last drunk waves out of Sea's Bounty. You don't hear as he gets attacked almost immediately as he steps through the door. You sleep even when he lets out a small scream, as canine like teeth puncture a skin on his neck. Naturally, you don't hear when his body hits the ground. You sleep the sleep of a righteous, not aware of the drama that is going on just a few feet away from your bed.

When you get up, first thing you notice is the mob in front of Sea's Bounty. They have gathered around the pool of blood and everybody is asking the same question: who did it and who was the victim? While murder is a common sight in Athkatla, it is rare indeed to be so obvious. This not being any of your concern, you shoot the grisly sight but a glance and head forward.

Arriving at the Graveyard, you find a tomb you were looking for. Heading inside, you come to your destination. Your old friend is buried here and you decided to finally pay your respect. If you couldn't be present at the moment of his death, you figure this is the least you can do. But something just doesn't feel right. While tomb are rarely place of joy and happiness, this one feels especially bleak and cold. Not even spiders and similar insect, native to tombs can be seen here. As you think you hear the voice of quicken footsteps, you start turning around yourself panickly. That's when you hear the cold voice:

“You're lucky that we have enought minions by now. But this won't save your life. I grow hungry, just waiting.“

As soon as this is said, you feel something heavy tackling you to the ground.

“Don't worry, this will be over fast.“

As you feel the fangs piercing your neck and your blood flowing into the mouths of the vampire, darkness slowly takes you. You know, there and then that this is over. As you hear cackling of many others around you, your assialant once again speaks to you:

“You're a strong one... but we have no need for you. There are now enought of us to make sure we can wipe the population of this city away.“

“When do we start mistress?

“Soon Valen. Very soon.“

As the night draws close, the people of Athkatla sets upon their night activities. Drunks find themselves a place where they will settle their thirst. Ladies of dubious morality wander the streets, looking for a customer. Thieves are looking for their victims. Night, as always, is brimming with life. But tonight, there is more to it than usuall. Tonight, darker shadows stalk the streets than usuall. Walking their way around the city, two unsuspecting villagers don't realise what danger they are in.

“I wish something interesting would happen in this city. Ever since the whole Eyeless cult there hasn't been much going on.

“Don't wish it! The last thing we need in this city is more commotion.

“Come on, where is your sense of adventure?

“Home, where I should be too. You know this is a dangerous our to be out.

“You are a smart one. Too bad that won't be able to help you.

Looking around with panic in their eyes, the two don't really don' know what to say to the cold voice. Finally, the braver of the two steps forward and adresses the shadows.

“Who are you? What do you want? Show yourself!“

“Who am I is of little importance to you. What do I want you fill find soon enought. As for showing myself...

Stepping from the shadows, the figure can only be described as what once was very attractive woman, but is now pale beyond comparison and there can be bitts of rotting flesh seen on her. As soon as the two let out the screams of horror, they are silenced by the vampires. But the scream was enought to alert city guard and some other people. As they arive to the location of the screams, they are witness to a grisly sight. Two of the villagers lay on floor, in pool of their own blood, their hearts ripped out of their chests with a look of utter horror on their faces. As you start questioning yourself what happened here, a cold laughter can be heard around you, joined by many others.

“Now the fun beggins.“

An older man, clad in armor with a big sword steps out from the crowd. From a scars on his face and dents in his armor, you can see that he is a well traveled adventurer and an experienced fighter. His eyes shine with a light that it's hard to deduce, but you can feel that you can trust him.

“I'm Keldorn Firecam, paladin of the Order of Radiant Heart. Show yourself monster and tell us what you want!“

At that, you can see a shadow detach itself from a nearby house and stepping further. Once again, you can see the same sight that the two unfortunate villagers saw only moments before. When she starts speaking, you can feel the malice in her voice.

“My name is Bodhi. Me and my brother are here because we were exiled from Suldanessellar and we're intending to get back. Your city will be the first on our way. Once we're done with you, queen Ellesime will fall easily.“

“We shall stop you monster. You and your unholy cadre!“

“We shall see paladin... We shall see.“

With that, she dissolves into a mist and leaves the scene. Looking around, you see there are many people watching the gruesome scene. You know now that there are vampires hidden among you. But who is an enemy and who can be trusted? Dark times are ahead. Can you find and defeat Bodhi and her vampires? Time will tell.

Few points:
  • pointing at yourself, TPBM, TPAM and narrators(I'm looking at you FC ) is forbiden and will count against your lynch quota. You got to pick a name of player at which you'll point
  • autolynches will be enforced after two days of no voting, unless you file away notice with me or Kantur before that
  • any questions can be dirrected to me or Kantur via PM
  • all the roles were picked at random. Please, don't base your votes on roles that player had in previous games(I'm looking at you again FC ). Seeing there are a lot of new players in the game, I wanted to be fair to everybody playing. Everyone of you had equal chance of getting every role
  • all the roles PMs can be seen in above spoilers. I used them such and you can use them should anybody ask you for your role PM
  • changed the villager description. As things were before this, villagers could side with CotN and the game would be won in matter of days. Now their victory is when they manage to eliminate CotN

If I remember anythign else I'll add it later on. Now, lets have some points!

Mi'ir sighed inwardly, you'd think that in flaming AMN of all places there'd be some coin to be had for a bard, especially one of his talent. But no, every innkeeper in town had turned him away (or, if the innkeeper didn't, his muscle would) He had enough to get by for a few days, but a little extra wouldn't hurt.

He wove his way through the crowd of the marketplace. He was slim, lithe, so weaving around the various folk wasn't difficult. He did, however, bump into one, but that was intentional. Mi'ir excused himself profusely before walking away. The merchant he'd bumped into just nodded and left...without his coin purse.

Perhaps some honest coin would be nice...

There was a spot on the ground near a merchant's stand. He sat down and took off his hat, spilling out long black hair. He tuned his lute and started playing.

It's going to be a long day...

Grave sniffed the air with a nose trained by years of tracking, taking advantage of the high hill looking down on Athkatla to survey the City of Coin as he did so. The scent was light but recent, getting stronger rather than weaker.

"So it begins. They are here...but weak, our chances are still good."

Nodding to himself, Grave slung his travelling pack over one broad shoulder and headed down towards the city, humming a nonsensical tune from his childhood as he walked. Despite his quick and light steps, his body moved with a subtle awkwardness, as if some past injury had left a vague but indefinable imprint on his gait. No-one but Grave knew, and he liked to keep himself to himself, maybe that's why the life of the lone hunter suited him so well.

As he entered the busy marketplace the scent was overcome by many other smells, tropical spices, the mingled sweat of unwashed bodies, the fetid stench of sewerage. Grave sighed and shouldered his way forcefully past knots of citizens, looking for a place to stay.

"Citizen,,,do you know of a good inn around these parts?"

Grave's voice was a strange one, a mixture of several accents mingled in such a way as to defeat any attempt at identification.

"I have heard the Fish & Anchor is a good establishment, is this so?"

Grave waited for the citizen to answer, who just so happened to be ArtifexFelicis.

Larkin Damodred turns as her faithful hound, Dakotah, growls a warning. She wipes her dagger clean on blood on the tattered cloak of the man she just killed and steps back, into the shadows. The dark green, vine-like tattoos prominent on her face and hands slowly start to recede, disappearing under her clothes. Her eyes, a lighter green than the strange marks, watch Dakotah as he takes up a spot across the alleyway, sniffing at some half-rotted food. A pair of guards come up the alley and spot the cooling corpse of the man. They rush forward to check him, then one looks out while the other rummages through the dead man's pockets. Larkin shakes her head and smiles coldly, touching the pouch she already got from him. It shifts slightly, and one of the guards turns and puts his hand on his sword.

What was that?

Aw, nothin'. Look, some mangy dog.

The first guard, the younger one, relaxes. His partner gives a frustrated snort and straightens. Let's get outta here.

As they leave, Larkin watches them with narrowed eyes. Her gaze shifts back to the corpse. Her expression is one of regret, but not remorse. She's too cold for that, too used to what she sometimes has to do to make it. Shouldn't have tried to steal from me. She looks at her dog and smiles, taking her dark brown, almost black hair, down from its bun. With a well-practiced move, she deftly takes the thick handful of her hair as it spills midway down her back and twists it, then wraps it tightly around itself, thrusting two long silver hairpins through it, etched with runes or letters of some sort.

Larkin steps out of the shadows and pats her thigh, and Dakotah hurries to come to her side. Good boy, Dakotah. Always lookin' out for me. She pets him affectionately and steps out into the common. She sees a bard playing, handsome, if a little feminine for her tastes. Of course, most bards were. She eyes the pair of guards exiting the other end of the alley. They didn't alert any of the others, probably too lazy to do the paperwork. The older one, particularly, she didn't like. She watches him with a not-quite smirk and hears him mention the name Ranna. She shakes her head and watches Dakotah sniff hungrily at a street vendor. Chuckling, she spends some of her newfound wealth and buys them each a large turkey leg. She leans against a wall to listen to the bard as she eats.

((Random point, as determined by the die...))

A young man enters the city, his white hair tucked under a rather ratty-looking hat, a pack slung over his shoulders. To the careful eye, he appears to be a wandering bard, but a closer inspection reveals sharper eyes and more trained muscles than would be expected of such a person...

He reaches the common, looking around with the eyes of a man who's used to danger, and used to spotting it. He dismisses the bard, raises an eyebrow at Larkin, and finally focuses a gimlet eye on Grave (Banjo) before shrugging and heading to a vending cart to get something to eat.

Amber kicked at the metal bars of her cell grumpily... it had already been a few hours and she deeply feared that the stench of the prison was ingratiating itself within the delicate fabrics which coated her body. Shaking her head, she sighed in annoyance and watched the delicate strands of her hair, amber of course, settle about her half-elven features, tapping her foot softly.

"Oy! Guard!" She yelled out, frowning a bit and planted her hands on either side of her hips, "How long ya be keepin' me in here? I told ya... it was just some abandoned tower... there weren't no one inside, so none's the victim of me sneaking a peak inside, yeah?"

"Tell it to the magistrate!" came the call down the corridor, "You'll be seeing him at first light tomorrow... now hush up your mouth before I come down there and give you a fresh bruise or two on those fragile little cheeks of yours! And don't think I won't hit a girl, ya damned half-breed!"

Grumbling slightly, Amber sighed and sat down at the back of her cell... there was a collection of straw that was meant to serve as a bed, but was likely infested by fleas...

Pulling her knees up to her chest, Amber began to sulk, her knee-high boots creaking with her movement and her long eyelashes fluttering closed.

((Traitor! ))

Mi'ir kept an eye on the crowd as he played, watching its ebb and flow. He watched the big man asks questions but only get cold looks in response.

Obviously not from around here...

The silver haired man caught his eye for a moment. That one was immediately reading the crowd for potential threats and, judging from the way his eyes just flowed right over Mi'ir, he didn't qualify.

What's a guy got to do to get noticed?

He was aware of eyes on him, but not the paying kind. He'd noticed the dog, mangy thing.

Of course, there were times when I've looked like that...

Playing was getting him no where. The people here were too busy to take any real notice. Skillful fingers detuned the lute for travel as he packed up. He spared a look towards the jailhouse with a chuckle.

Serve's her right...she should've known better. He thought of Amber (Fujin) and laughed to himself again. I should probably help her out, before she gets into real trouble.

He headed off towards the guardhouse, stopping only to lift another purse from another one of the high class customers.

Larkin chuckles and clucks her tongue to get Dakotah to come over. She kneels down and speaks quietly into the dog's ear and puts something in his mouth. It glints silver in the light, and he silently trots after the dark-haired bard. When the young man isn't looking, the dog slips it into the back of one of his shoes, then turns. Larkin rolls her eyes as Dakotah returns, tongue hanging out happily as he settles down to gnaw on his bone. She laughs and kneels to scratch him. I said to be subtle, boy. You did that on purpose, didn't you? Dakotah gives her his doggy grin and she smiles again. Well, never let it be said I'm not a patron of the arts. She snickers and finishes her food, tossing the bone for Dakotah to gnaw on. Already occupied with the one in his mouth, he places a massive forepaw over it possessively. Larkin chuckles again - Dakotah was the only real joy she could remember.

The white-haired young man buys a box of fried potatoes and finds a quiet spot to eat them, setting his pack against the wall and sitting next to it. An observant eye would note that he'd picked a spot where nobody could sneak up behind him, and where he had a clear field of view in front...

After eating about a quarter of the box, he sets it aside and takes a sip from his canteen. He then pulls a harmonica from his pocket and, after a moment, starts to play the haunting melody of Red River Valley.

Quikly striding, his hood up, he makes his way to the market. After seeing some new strange people standing seperately he sees some asking for directions and where to stay. He mutters in a strange language, while the wind softly makes his cloak blow up lightly. His hood still up he sees a lama pointing at that Griever person.

Old. When an elf was old enough to look the part, he was pretty damn old. The shopkeep known only as Crimson Tenebrous fit that description and fit it entirely too well.

He'd weathered the prior disturbances of the City of Coin through a careful mix of diplomacy and subtle action. This newest addition to the city's climate hardly intimidated him.

He reached down, opening a cage and removing a rat. Tying a small note to the rat's leg, he set it down, made a soft 'tchh' sound, and watched as it scampered off into the city, seeking its quarry.

He'd worked with Damodred before. She was enough of a realist to understand neccesities. Young, might even pass as attractive among her peers. The battle crests were, in Tenebrous' opinion, a mistake.

Not like a rat. Impermanent, but eternal, rats. One like another and another and another in the eyes of most. Rather like humans, that. A second rat was selected, this one an almost sable tone, and sent to spy on Grave (Banjo1985).

He permitted himself a quiet laugh, then moved toward the front of his stall. The first wave of customers were beginning to trickle in.

The guardhouse stood apart from the other buildings of this part of town. It had a utilitarian look while the others sported more fanciful architecture. There were only a few guards there, the others were probably out on patrol or just generally causing trouble. The guard standing outside looked Mi'ir over a bit contemptously.

Kin I help you?

Mi'ir knew that look all to well, the rough and tumble types always gave him that look. Fortunately, he also enjoyed messing with the ones dumb enough to let it show. He put a hand on his hip and cocked it to one side, running a hand through his hair.

There's someone here I need to see. He said in his most fawning voice. Half-elf, amber hair, real troublemaker. He winked. Think you could let me in to see her?

The guard flushed and stammered a bit, exactly the reaction Mi'ir was hoping for. Time to drive it home.

You could even join me down there, in the dark, if you want...

The guard stammered something that sounded like "No...that's ok" and waved Mi'ir in. Mi'ir glided past the guard, waiting until he was inside to drop the persona. Works every time... He found the cell Amber was currently residing in and smiled wryly.

I warned you.

Asmodean turned, his lucern hammer swinging in its back sheath. He strode down the street, head low. There were times a paladin would never had needed his identity secret, but with the... colourful history between the Order of the Golden Cup and the Radiant Heart he deemed it prudent. His plain armour and sackcloth robes attracted few glances, most taking him for a fighter or some such. Asmodean turned a corner and the voices of his tutors returned,
"The road to redemption is long and arduous, befitting of an Ilmatarii. Walk that path, and absolve yourself through suffering."

A dwarf steps into the city, scowling up at all the big people and looming towers of cold stone. Strapped to his back lies an axe bigger than he, undented and looking fresh from the forge. The young dwarf decides to make for the tavern, and hopes it will redeem this... city.

Before making three steps, he notices a llama pointing at him, completely out of the blue, for no apparent rhyme or reason. Without another thought, the dwarf sits down upon the ground and cries.

Great, not only am I stuck in the worst smelling city in Faerun but now everyone's going to die. I need a drink.

As Stu or, as he prefers to be known, Stu XLII of the noble house of Doku, heads towards the nearest tarvern, he accidentally walks into Dallas-Dakota.

*Yes, this is my standard 'point at the next poster' point. Sorry, that was a typo. What I meant to say was that I point at Dallas-Dakota and the fact that he posted after me was completely coincidental.

((Read the rules in second post. Points such as this won't be counted towards lynch votes and will count towards your autolynch quota. You need to point at specific person.

I also added two new rules, or should I say changes. Nothing major, the villagers role is now standard villager role. Before that, wording was dubious and allowed villagers to side with CotN. This is now not possible anymore since villagers most work towards their extermination. Also, roles in the second post are also role PMs and you can use those should anybody ask for your role PM.

Back to the game. I appologize for this and I hope it won't happen again. Love the roleplaying, by the way ))

Despite it being a bright day the room is dim, lit only by the fire in the corner, the tavern's windows long ago ceased to let in any light. Years and years of grime caked the glass. Not that it mattered anyway night or day the patrons were drunk and lecherous and no amount of twisting and weaving could avoid ALL those hands. Born into her job Ranna took it in her stride sometimes the banter was fun and lighthearted, but you always have to take the bad with the good...

Moving round the bar she encounters a pair of wandering hands avoiding them she turns to see the culprits..

Oi Leeroy, Burrich, dont'cha think it'd be time for you to be seein' ya wives... You've been here since daybreak! It's well afta noon now... Oh.. you want MORE ale? *Sigh* Commin up...

Ranna moves towards the bar and she sees one of the regulars talking with her father.. ever being the nosy wench she buts into their conversation with the ease of the truly tactless.

Heya, Maek did ya eva sort out your problems wit that darned Deimos Hellfire?? You can't be lettin' that upstart be gettin' away with movin' in on your lass like that brazen fool that he is!

In the corner of the Sea's bounty Durro resumes what he does best, which is to drink as much as he can before passing out.
For the savvy Swashbuckler times have been good, after running into a band of Xvarts in the surrounding fields he managed to loot a gold necklace and a sum of 103Gp precisly, which would afford him about a week of the high life, before he has to resume his adventuring.

Leaning back on his chair he pulls himself out of the conversation with some fellow adventurers and, placing his tankard on the table calls out;
"Barman, another glass of your Athkatlan ale if you would!"

A rather robust fellow shambles up to the table, his flabby arms crossed over his chest.
"That's been yar fourth glass, don't you think ye should be paying yer tab now?"

"The tab...eh, ah yes the tab!" exclaims Durro "Barman, another pint of your finest ale for the tab!"

The Barman sighs as he pours another glass.
