Introduction...
Once upon a time, there was a small kingdom called Altaria.
For hundreds of years the kingdom was beset by turmoil. Evil loomed everywhere and despite the efforts of numerous heroic adventurers, the evil kept coming. The kingdom would be destroyed if this went on for too long.
Just ten years ago, a new leader, Prince Arthanis, came to the throne of Altaria. He made it his mission to rebuild the ranks of adventurers to fight evil. He personally trained hundreds of adventurers, of which you are one.
The plan worked even better than he expected, for the evil has been almost completely driven off. Unfortunately, this means that adventurers are almost all out of work, as are the people who supply them.
There is an old legend known as the "Gate to Carpathia". The legend says that there is a magical portal somewhere in Altaria which leads to a kingdom called Carpathia, a world full of wonders. Nobody knows what those wonders are, because nobody has come back through the portal, and many who have sought out the portal have never returned. With the dearth of work in Altaria, there is renewed interest among adventurers to rediscover the Gate to Carpathia.
But there is more to this story than meets the eye...
----
Game System: D+D 4th Edition.
Setting: Homebrew. Most of the game will consist of traveling to an unknown land and trying to figure out what is going on, so you're not supposed to know a lot about the setting.
Number of Players: 4-6 reliable players.
Gaming Medium: All non-combat activities will take place on the OOTS forums. Combat will be done using MapTool (or similar virtual tabletop program depending on preferences of players.)
Character Creation: Standard character creation rules from the PHB (22 point buy), with all characters starting at 1st level. You may use races, classes, and character creation options from Dragon magazine (if so, please post a link to the relevant article)
Alignment: Any non-evil.
Die Rolling: Use the board's built-in die roller.
Variant Rules: We will be using Stalker0's Obsidian Skill Challenge System for skill challenges. Link is at:
http://www.enworld.org/forum/4e-fan-...1-now-pdf.html
Other homebrew subsystems (like rules for researching new magic items) may be introduced during the game depending on player actions and the progress of the story.
Character Background:
Desirable but not essential. If you choose to post a background it doesn't need to be very detailed. However, please refer to the introduction above to make sure your background fits with the existing part of the story.
Hack/Slash vs Roleplay vs Puzzle-Solving: The overarching plot involves characters traveling to a strange land, exploring, and finding out what is going on. However, the balance of combat, NPC interaction, and problem-solving will depend on what actions players take. For example, players might choose whether to compete in a gladiator competition and win a prize (combat), trick an NPC into giving them what they want (roleplaying) or break in and steal something (puzzle-solving) all to achieve the same objective.
Rulebooks Allowed:
Core rulebooks as well as all Dungeon/Dragon magazines that are available online. Adventurer's Vault material will also be introduced during the campaign.
Posting Frequency:
I'm hoping for about one post a day from everyone, although I understand that real life sometimes intervenes. If you won't be posting for more than a couple days in a row, please notify me in advance.
Expected Duration:
Well, I hope that it goes on for a good while. This is PbP; it'll die when it does, and such is natural. I just hope to keep things fun in the interim, no matter how long or short that may be. If you're in and you need/want to drop, just let me know and things will be cool.
