What do the Erfworlders do when not at war?
I've been wondering about this for a while. What do the erfworld population do when not at war? Their entire game system revolves around economics and combat. Do they like to fight?

Re: What do the Erfworlders do when not at war?
We know only of what Banhammer would do when not at war, sit around and philosophize.
Apparently the idea of "hobbies" does exist, as the concept is one Stanley understands. And Sizemore studies magics outside dirtamancy just out of general intellectual curiosity, apparently. Casters can create magic items and presumably spell scrolls when not creating or raising units like golems or undead.
As for actual work, we know that mining is known to Erfworlders but don't know if any other natural resources are exploited.
Bogroll showed that cooking is possible and that not all food "pops." Other than that, we don't know that any other crafts are practiced. Do the stuffed gwiffon heads and bear skins pop on their own or do units create them? I've assumed that furniture just pops, on the other hand. But what about the murals of the Titans? Did they appear on Stanley's command, assuming that they haven't been there from GK's founding or from whenever GK came under the control of the Saline/Stanley faction?
And though everyone seems to believe, at least in this area of Erf, that the Titans are the lords and creators, we've never seen priests or churches; there's no mention of a holy book. Literature and art seem to be possible, I'd say, even if GK doesn't seem to have any books except accounts of battles.Last edited by DevilDan; 2008-12-08 at 03:40 PM.

Re: What do the Erfworlders do when not at war?
Not all of them, or at least not all of the time, or there would be no point in having hippiemancy. Also, Sizemore doesn't like to fight, but he's not in control of anything but a cesspit and some golems.
They also have farms (panel 6). It appears to be possible for a kingdom to maintain itself independently without war, under some fairly rare conditions. Until someone else picks a fight that the king can't avoid.
Bogroll also demonstrates metalsmithing (panel 4)."We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is
whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."

Re: What do the Erfworlders do when not at war?
To bolster the point, the way Wanda talks about flower power here indicates that those 'mancers have enough potency to alter the potency of another side's aggression towards the 'mancer's side by an 'amount'. This 'amount' is not enough to stop the entire RCC when used conventionally, but in less emotional conflicts(or to Parson) it might be enough to gain a ceasefire.
A real pity we don't have any idea of what the magic classes do, outside those that are featured in the comic currently.

Re: What do the Erfworlders do when not at war?
I guess Erfworlders have daytime jobs when not on war. For war they have to be drafted and get used with their function as pikenier, archer or whatever. We know Sizemore drilled the tunnels the gobwin miners used, and these miners were never again mentioned, not even in the stipid meal. So either they were sent to war and died long ago (unlikely), or they are the gobwin infantry that was listed.
I always guessed that stress of the coalition for its members partly came from the fact that the units in war are no longer productive in the mines and fields.

Re: What do the Erfworlders do when not at war?
They probably have their own lives within the 'laws' of erfworld. Imagine the reverse of an erfworlder thats really good at RTS games being taken to our world. This erfworlder would only see whatever war he had been summoned for and probably wonder "how in the world do people do non-war tasks in real time?". It's one of those things that doesn't make sense to us because the laws of physics are different and isn't really important in regards to the current story so (at least in my case) don't worry about it and enjoy the comic.
