Re: Aziraphales Actually Alliterative And Awesomely Affluent Random Banter #104
Algebra is used all the time. How do you figure out how much an item in the store is going to cost with tax?
price + (%tax)(price) = actual cost
(OK, that's percentages, but still...I know I didn't really "get" that till algebra.)
Or ratios. x is to 5 as 5 is to 2000...sometimes you need that.
Or figuring out if the cashier cheated you. I bought four of them and she charged me $16...4x=16...so that's $4 apiece. But the price tag said $3.50. Hey!"
Sorry...no matter what your profession is, elementary algebra is necessary. :smalltongue:
Edit: Many-ninja'd

I have a small pile of pennies, a handful of empty candy tins and an interesting marble. Will that be enough of an army, or shall I break out my 14 year old package of lifesavers?
I never liked algebra much. Stupid showing of all work...

I couldn't hit a commuter on a tube train, but by god darts is fun to watch. Particularly when polishing boots.
That's some useful info, right there.

Folk music is amazing. Listen to The Smothers Brothers if you DON'T like it- it's folk music for people that can't stand folk music.
That being said, there is little room for employment as a folk singer. I hope you live in notamericastan and know how to play a string insturment, as well.

The Smothers Brothers are grand, and they just put out that best of DVD set, too....
I live in America. I can play mandolin, guitar, banjo, and fiddle. I'll play in the streets for small change if I have to. I'm too lazy to work and too scared to steal. Singing is my only option.

Ah, hence your location.
I understand. I wish I could play a fitting instrument, I can only sing and act... and play the trumpet....

Only? That's quite an impressive range of talents, Colonel.

Also, dad thinks I'm a Communist...

...Why, on both accounts?
Also, which jobs benefit from being able to write really good analytical essays of literature and suchlike?

Re: Aziraphales Actually Alliterative And Awesomely Affluent Random Banter #104
Bangor: Perfect course and apparantly a nice place.
Problem: If I go there I can't afford to live. Student loans could cover the tuition fees and housing costs, but after that I'm screwed.
UEA: Really good reccomendation and really cheap for me.
Problem: In comparison, the course isn't as good, focusing more on English Literature than I'd like and I'll still be at home for another 3 years.
Problems, problems, problems...

Re: Aziraphales Actually Alliterative And Awesomely Affluent Random Banter #104
I think people take things forgranted, especially algebra.
Sure, maybe you don't care that you are ignorant about why once you flip the light switch the voltage (or more accurate, electrical potential difference) induces the movement of electrons in a direction taken opposite of the directional scalar that we name current.
Maybe you don't care that aforementioned current can be modeled successfully by the equation i=V/R. Maybe, then, you don't care that using algebraic manipulation, we can solve for the voltage so that V = iR.
Maybe you just don't care. After all, ignorance is bliss to the ignorant, and hell to those that crave knowledge. I'm proud to consider myself one of the latter.

In randomness, logic will always be given birth to. Exceptions done do not exist.
In the end, logic rules all.

Would you please correct my spelling? My hands are cold, and my typing is regrettably suffering.

Ultimately, wouldn't it be better to finish up with a degree you want? Rather than one you were forced to have? Do you have any relatives to mooch off? Maybe you could house-share? And eating cheaply (or not at all) ain't that hard.
-
Re: Aziraphales Actually Alliterative And Awesomely Affluent Random Banter #104
It may not be hard, but it is bad for you.

Well, Dihan is the only person I know near Bangor, and I don't think he plans to go there anyway. Eating cheaply ain't a problem, and I expect I'll make good enough friends to house share come the second year.
I wanna do that course so much now. It'll just require me to get out more student loans than I'd like, especially considering my future plans.

Get your parents to buy you pasta and stuff food-wise.
Try and share a house/hall of residence.
Get a job while you're at it, so that you're not so badly screwed when it comes to money.

Yeah, Jibbies.
Get a job now. Earn money.
Get a job there. Earn money.
All the while, write for local newspapers, and teach English to immigrants. Earn money.

Re: Aziraphales Actually Alliterative And Awesomely Affluent Random Banter #104
But...
But it's a job.
I'd have to give my moral high ground...
(Plus there aren't any around here now. They've all been filled by students, and the only time there will be jobs is when all the Uni students come back and take them)
(No I'm not just making excuses)
