About Carden-Gix'oth
Biography:
I'm an avid gamer, lover of all things RPG and just an overall nerd in general.

I've been playing D&D since I was 10. I got into D&D with 2.0, and I've been in love with 3.0 & 3.5e since they came out. 4e is fun, especially in Neverwinter Online, though it's a bit weird to play PnP after having played NWO. 5e...

Ok, unpopular "stupid" opinion incoming:

5e sucks. It sucks harder than a half-starved Mind Flayer. A thousand super computers, calculating for a million years can not even approach the amount of suck that is 5e.

It took the beauty of 3.5, over-complicated the saves, and dumbed down literally everything else. A Level 20 3.5e Fighter (played by someone who ISN'T a power gamer) can kick the ass of a Level 20 5e Fighter with the same exact equipment.

A Level 20 3.5e Fighter (played by a power gamer) can wipe our an entire party of 5e characters. It's ****ing ridiculous... The ONLY things that are good about 5e is you don't have to roll to confirm a Crit (but that's also dumbing **** down, so I'm on the fence here), and the Advantage/Disadvantage system is nifty (still shouldn't have replaced Spell Resistance, among other things, but I do like the idea that a single Bard Spell became a core 5e mechanic. That **** is hilarious!)

Pathfinder is fun, and Shadowrun is awesome, though it's been a while since I've played either...

Although, I DO have a theory as to why 5e is the way it is... If you haven't gone blind from impotent rage yet and are still here, here's my theory:

Magic items are obviously getting weaker, that much is clear (Holy Avenger in 3.5 vs 5e for reference). More expensive as well (Ring of +5 to STR in 3.5e costing 50,000Gp plus item cost, and a Ring of STR +3 in 5e being 500,000Gp). Spells that have remained functionally the same now have altered effects (Most dealing different damage, but others doing different things now).

My theory is this: Magic is dying, fading out of Faerun. It started soon after the Spell Plague.

Soon, there will be no more magic, Arcane or Divine.

No more Wizards, Sorcerers to bend the natural energies to their wills. No more Paladins, Clerics, or Favored Souls gifted magic by the Gods to push back Evil (or help spread it) No more Spirit Shamans helping those that have passed. No more Wu Jen, devoted to mastering their elemental magics. No more Warlocks, marked by otherworldly beings and gifted with immense powers... Bards no longer will be able to cast spells anymore.

Aasimar, Elves, Dwarves, Tieflings, Yaun-Ti, Orcs, Ogres, Dragons.... basically any non-human race will slowly disappear, fade away into memory only to fade further into myth.

Memories will fade, stories will be lost, and time will go on.

And it turns out, Faerun is just Earth hundreds of millions of years ago, long enough for even the ruins of the Imaskari Empire to turn to dust.

History plays out as we know it, Sumeria, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, the Holy Roman Empire, America, all of it.

and then, in 2011...

BAM.

Magic comes back.

Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Dragons come back.

Mega-Corps eventually start to vie for power, run by Dragons playing their games using the Mortals for pawns as they always have. The megacorporations forcing everyone to get a SIN (System Identification Number).

And those who are SIN-less, those who care nothing for the Corps, they take the dirty jobs, hoping that each 'Run is a milk run, knowing inside that no 'Run ever is.

From the Street Samurais, masters of weaponry to the Shamans and Mages, masters of the mystic arts, to the Physical Adept, the crazy bastards that turn their noses up at guns and magic and punch everything to death, to the Deckers, masters of cyber warfare....

The Shadowrunners try to take back their streets from the Mega-Corporations run by the Dragons one 'Run at a time.

I like the idea of it, and would love it from a lore perspective, but I hate the mechanics of 5e with a the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns.

((Or RIFTS. RIFTS could happen too. But I'm not well versed in RIFTS lore to incorporate it into an alternate version of my theory))

So I don't talk about 5e....
